Son of kingpin 'El Chapo' to plead guilty to drug trafficking in US
Ovidio Guzman is accused of conspiring to ship cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States, via a faction of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel founded by his father.
Federal court documents dated June 30 and signed by Ovidio Guzman, alias "Raton" (Mouse), say he wishes to plead guilty to settle the case and to waive trial in Illinois, where he is being held.
According to documents from the Chicago court hearing his case, a plea hearing is scheduled for July 9 before Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman. After that hearing, the judge will sentence him at a date yet to be determined.
US authorities accuse Ovidio and his three brothers of leading Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel designated by the Trump administration as a global "terrorist" organization.
The United States accuses the four of trafficking fentanyl into the United States, where the opioid epidemic is linked to tens of thousands of deaths.
Ovidio Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2023 to face narcotics charges, joining his father, one of the world's most infamous drug traffickers, who is serving a life sentence in a US prison.
The Sinaloa cartel is one of six Mexican drug trafficking groups designated terrorist organizations by US President Donald Trump.
Another son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was arrested after arriving in the United States last July in a private plane with cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who claimed he had been kidnapped.
The arrests sparked cartel infighting that has left more than 1,200 people dead and 1,400 missing in Sinaloa state, located in northwestern Mexico.
On Monday, the bodies of 20 people, several of them decapitated, were found on a highway bridge in a part of Mexico where factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel are fighting, authorities said.

41-year-old New Bedford man killed in New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge crash
NEW BEDFORD – A 41-year-old New Bedford man was killed in a two-car motor-vehicle crash on New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge. At approximately 11 a.m. July 2, New Bedford Police and EMS received a 911 call regarding a serious motor vehicle crash on the bridge, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. Upon arrival, police located a 2015 Chevy Silverado which was occupied by a 26-year-old man who was transported by EMS for minor injuries. The Silverado had a moderate amount of damage to the front end and came to a rest in the right lane of travel facing eastbound. The second vehicle involved was determined to be a 2001 Mazda Miata which was observed to have catastrophic damage to the front of end of the vehicle. The Miata was located on the eastbound side of the highway facing west as it lost control while crossing the bridge and struck the Silverado. The Miata's driver was identified as 41-year-old Gregory Crook McGuire of New Bedford. Crook McGuire was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The crash closed the bridge for several hours. Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office also responded to the scene. This matter is under investigation although charges are not anticipated at this time. Donald Trump Wants to Add His Face to Mount Rushmore. Here's What Its Former Keeper Says About 'the Reality of the Rock'
Experts are weighing in on Donald Trump's open desire to be the fifth face on Mount Rushmore. Trump has floated the idea of adding himself to the famed South Dakota mountainside since his first term, reportedly fancying the idea so much that then-South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem gifted him an $1,100 bust of his face in the lineup during his park visit in 2020. The possibility of a five-face Rushmore has garnered renewed interest among Trump's most loyal supporters since his return to office, culminating in a House bill introduced by Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna. But the question of whether the plan could — or should — work still looms. Trump isn't the first proposed addition to the landmark — Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan have also been mentioned in the past as possible additions. But a longstanding argument against any updates to the sculpture, said Dan Wenk, the former superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, is that the piece of art is already finished, visually and rhetorically. According to the National Park Service, the four presidents carved on Mount Rushmore were specifically chosen by sculptor Gutzon Borglum to represent major facets of the United States' first 150 years: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln represent the birth, growth, development and preservation of the country, respectively. 'You wouldn't add another face to Borglum's Mount Rushmore just like you wouldn't add one to da Vinci's 'Last Supper,'' Wenk told The New York Times. 'But I recognize that these types of ideas are no longer off the table.' Another, more practical point is that the mountain may not be able to withstand any further alteration. During the sculpture's creation from 1927 to 1941, questions were constantly raised about the reliability of the mountain's composite, as the rock was in many places delicate and unpredictable. The National Park Service told the Times in a statement that there simply isn't room for another face on the side of the mountain. 'The carved portion of Mount Rushmore has been thoroughly evaluated, and there are no viable locations left for additional carvings,' the park service told the outlet. Borglum — the main mind behind Mount Rushmore's design — ultimately changed his plan nine times, due to rock inconsistency, fractures and fragility in the mountain. Early plans, according to Smithsonian magazine, included an entablature with a short history of the country, a staircase, a Hall of Records to include the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and the torsos of each president featured. But each idea was abandoned due to the rock's fragility. While there is, technically, free mountainside space on either side of the historic sculpture, Borglum believed only the space he ended up using in the final product was actually workable, and there would be no more room for any sort of addition. Thus, those wishing to see Mount Rushmore evolve in any artistic way are likely to be disappointed, Wenk told the Times.
