Fluminense vs Al Hilal, FIFA Club World Cup — A clash between giants from Saudi Arabia and Brazil in quarterfinal
The Saudi Pro League club produced a stunning performance to beat Premier League giant Manchester City 4-3 in extra time in the round of 16.
While there was no shortage of heart and effort in Al-Hilal's display against Pep Guardiola's side, it was allied with an impressive tactical discipline, shape and technical quality.
And although it will be remembered for putting Middle Eastern club football on the map with that win, the victory came with a strong international influence.
Italian Simone Inzaghi took charge of the team just before the start of the tournament and is able to call on experienced talent such as Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo, former Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
It is the latter, who played for Inzaghi at Lazio in Serie A, who proved to be the most influential against City and earned the label 'fantastic' from Guardiola.
A tall, strong, physical presence in midfield, Milinkovic-Savic is a key element of Al-Hilal's counter-attacking style, which proved to be so effective against City.

Inzaghi is glad to have a core of players with whom he can communicate and who give his team the necessary nous and experience for these tough tests.
'I didn't need to get to know Sergej. He is an extraordinary player who combines quality and quantity,' Inzaghi said after Saturday's win.
'He ran a lot, just like all the other players. He, like Koulibaly and Joao Cancelo, speaks Italian, so they also help my staff and me,' he said.
'Historic accomplishment'
'It's definitely great to receive these compliments from a manager like Guardiola,' Milinkovic-Savic told FIFA.com.
'We showed what level we're on. I'm feeling great here, we're training well and physically I'm feeling good. Inzaghi has now arrived, whom I know really well, so now we need to believe until the end.
'What we did (against City) is inexplicable. We played against one of the best teams in the world, and this motivates us more for the next games. It's a historic accomplishment for us, the club and the whole country. We believed for every single second, and we've done it.'

Full-back Renan Lodi, winger Malcom and striker Marcos Leonardo, who scored twice against City, provide some Brazilian influence which could come in very useful at Camping World Stadium on Friday.
Fluminense also overcame the odds to reach the last eight, beating UEFA Champions League finalist Inter Milan 2-0.
Having gone unbeaten in the group stage, including a goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund, the Brazilians -- with 40-year-old Thiago Silva at the back -- have shown strong defensive resilience.
While the two teams meet for the first time in a competitive game, several Brazilians have played for the Saudi club, none better known than 1970 World Cup winner Rivellino, who won the domestic league with Al-Hilal after joining it from Fluminense.

‘They will never be forgotten': Mo Salah pays tribute to Diogo Jota and brother Andre
New Delhi: Mohamed Salah took to social media on Friday to send his condolences after his Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva passed away in a car accident on Thursday. The accident took place around 12:30 am local time in the Spanish province of Zamora. According to the Spanish police, Jota's car veered off the road while trying to overtake another vehicle. A tyre blowout caused the car to lose control and catch fire. Sadly, both Jota and his brother died at the scene. "I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me from going back to Liverpool after the break. Teammates come and go, but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back. "My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents, who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother, Andre, need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten," posted Salah on social media. As per a report by ESPN, the funeral will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. local time in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, after the bodies arrived in their hometown on Thursday. The funeral will be held at the Matriz de Gondomar church, located 33 kilometres from Porto. A wake will take place from 4 p.m. local time on Friday. Jota, 28, was a key figure for both Portugal and Liverpool. Since joining the Premier League club in 2020, he has helped them win major trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. In his time at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 matches and was widely admired for his work ethic and ability to deliver in crucial moments. For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and netted 14 goals. He was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal defeated Spain in the final. The forward had celebrated that victory with his teammates just weeks ago. Teammate Endo Wataru also took to social media to reiterate the message relayed by the entire world - 'You will never walk alone' "Jots, I still can't believe it. I don't want to believe it. What a great player, what a great person you were. You will be remembered forever. My thoughts are with your wife, kids, and all family and friends. Love you, Jots. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. You will never walk alone," posted Endo on social media.

Palmeiras ask for 'amazing game' from Estevao against future employers Chelsea
Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira is hoping teenage sensation Estevao Willian can wave goodbye to the Brazilian team's fans by producing "one amazing game" and helping them beat his future employers Chelsea in Friday's Club World Cup quarter-final. Palmeiras ask for 'amazing game' from Estevao against future employers Chelsea Winger Estevao, 18, will leave Palmeiras at the end of the tournament in the United States to join Chelsea in a big-money transfer that was agreed more than a year ago. The side from Sao Paulo hope that facing his future employers will provide Estevao with extra motivation to impress at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. "I don't speak with him , but he knows what he needs to do tomorrow and I hope he gives his best for the owners of Chelsea," Ferreira told reporters. "They see him as a player of potential with all the quality he has. It will be an opportunity for him to show how good he is so all I expect from him is to give his maximum, to attack, defend and maybe score a goal to give a goodbye to our fans." Ferreira added: "We helped him to grow as a man and a professional so it can be a good moment to give him a goodbye with one amazing game and maybe, you never know, with one goal." Palmeiras, who lost to Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup in its old guise in 2022, are hoping to strike another blow for South America against Europe at the tournament. Chelsea have already lost to Brazilian opposition in Philadelphia when they fell to Flamengo in the group stage, and Palmeiras could have the bigger backing inside the stadium on Friday. Ferreira expects locals to support his team on what is the United States' Independence Day holiday. "Yes we are the underdogs but it can be a good moment because tomorrow, if I am not wrong, it is the Independence Day against the English," Ferreira smiled. "We are up against a big team with a lot of talent, young players also, but we have one dream and now we will fight for it with open eyes and give our maximum tomorrow." as/pb This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Liverpool to 'immortalise' Diogo Jota's jersey No.20 following his tragic death
The tributes continue to pour in for 28-year-old Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who died on Thursday following a car accident in Spain. The Liverpool star and his brother Andre Silva, 25, died in the accident after their Lamborghini "left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking", according to Spain's Guardia Civil. The Premier League 2024-25 champions, Liverpool, have now announced that they will be "immortalising" Jota's jersey No.20 in his memory. Liverpool will "immortalise' Diogo Jota's jersey No.20 following his tragic death in a car accident in Spain. (REUTERS) "The No.20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool's 2024-25 title-winners – the club's 20th – with his trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April's Merseyside derby a poignant last goal of his life," Liverpool said in an official statement. Liverpool have never retired a jersey number in tribute to a player. However, fans continue to demand that the club make an exception for the talented and gifted striker. Jota, who was born in Porto, started his professional career with Paços de Ferreira's youth setup before moving to La Liga club Atlético Madrid in 2016. After being acquired by Porto on loan, he spent some time there before being transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. In 2020, Jota joined Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, and it was there that he found most of his success. With Liverpool, he won the FA Cup and League Cup under Jurgen Klopp and the Premier League under Arne Slot in the 2024-25 season. He was also part of Portugal's squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. What did Arne Slot say about Jota's death? Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he could not imagine the pain of the Jota family as he paid tribute to the 28-year-old forward, who was one of the major reasons behind the club's recent success. "My first thoughts are not those of a football manager. They are of a father, a son, a brother and an uncle, and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who have experienced such an unimaginable loss," he said. "For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special," he added. Diogo Jota has made 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining the club in 2020. He scored 65 goals, and most of his strikes came when the Reds needed it the most. He had the knack of standing tall under pressure.
