Fallen marine from Rochester will be honored by NASCAR driver
Corporal Reynold Armand was a graduate of Eastridge High School before he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the US Marines. Armand passed away on August 2, 2007, in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was 21 years old.
Professional driver Daniel Suarez announced Wednesday that he will honor Armand during NASCAR's Military Appreciation Weekend. His name will be featured on the windshield of the Freeway #99 car.
Miriam Velez is the Gold Star Mother of Cpl. Armand and a co-founder of the local organization Latino Military Coalition. She shared her thoughts on Suarez honoring her son.
'I sincerely appreciate Freeway for sharing my son's story and keeping his memory alive,' Velez wrote in a statement.
Suarez will be racing in the 600 Miles of Remembrance, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday, May 25.

Is 18-Year-Old Connor Zilisch Ready For Full-Time Cup Ride?
Although Trackhouse made no mention of Connor Zilisch in its news release about Daniel Suarez leaving after this season, Zilisch was definitely part of the message. You can count on one finger the number of candidates in play to possibly replace Suarez. Actually not candidates. Candidate. Zilisch. JR Motorsports has already considered who will replace Zilisch for next season, and that's assuming that Zilisch doesn't return full time to the Xfinity Series next year. He's a full-time Trackhouse driver, and the teams did a deal for him to race for JRM this season. The 18-year-old Zilisch, who turns 19 later this month, appears to be a future superstar. When I talk to people in the industry regarding him racing Cup full time in 2026, most tell me he should, that the cars in Xfinity are too different (so what he learns about the race car in Xfinity doesn't easily apply to a Cup car) and he is good enough to race on the next level. The stats pretty much bear that out. He has three wins with nine top fives in 20 career Xfinity Series races. He has top-five finishes in each of his last five starts on tracks that range from ovals 1.33 to 2.5 miles in length and a road course. That is staggering because he couldn't race on an oval bigger than 1.25 miles until he turned 18 a year ago. He sits fifth in the current Xfinity standings, despite missing a race because of a back injury. Zilisch did throw away the win at Mexico City with an impatient move on a restart. But that's going to happen. He has led laps in 12 of his 16 starts this year. As far as Cup, he has made three Cup starts with a best of 11th at Atlanta last week. The biggest question is whether he is mentally ready. Many feel he is. When he raced in Europe in his early teens, he would go on his bike to get food. He has a swagger but also a relaxed mentality where it appears the pressure doesn't get to him. The Xfinity Series is the best series for a driver to mentally prepare for Cup. The 33-week season doesn't allow much time to sulk when getting punched in the gut with bad breaks. A driver must put the past behind quickly and get ready for the next event. Up until last month, it would have been easy to question Zilisch. He had just three top 10s in the first 11 races this year. He had crashed out of three events and had four finishes of 20th or worse. But just look at his results in the last five weeks. He had a second at Charlotte, a second at Nashville, a fifth at Mexico City, a first at Pocono and a fourth at Atlanta. He came back from a three-week break (he missed Texas and then the series had back-to-back weekends off) and has finished strong every week. Let's be clear: There is absolutely no reason to really rush him. Another Xfinity Series season would probably do him good. But to say he's not ready? You can say it, but the results don't back up that sentiment. Trackhouse believes he is ready. Sponsor Red Bull probably wants him in Cup. The prudent approach would be concluding he should run Xfinity full time again next year. I personally felt that way in early May until this latest run. With every race, he makes it clear that he doesn't need another Xfinity season. There are plans for him to make more Cup starts this year. His recent results have been good. He's got the demeanor. All this indicates that moving Zilisch to Cup won't be a mistake and that he won't be one of those drivers talked about as elevated too soon. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. NASCAR‘s Countersuit Against 23XI, Front Row Motorsports Advances
U.S. District Judge Kenneth D. Bell on Monday denied a motion to dismiss NASCAR's antitrust counterclaim against Front Row Motorsports, 23XI Racing and 23XI co-owner Curtis Polk, a group NASCAR says has engineered an 'illegal cartel.' The legal battle between these parties has become a familiar topic in sports law. Advertisement More from Last year, 23XI and Front Row sued NASCAR and its CEO, James France, claiming they've unlawfully monopolized premier stock car racing and used charters, which guarantee teams a starting position in NASCAR-sanctioned races but restrict their opportunities to compete in other circuits, to further their alleged conspiracy. In March, NASCAR countersued, asserting 23XI Racing and Front Row have conspired to use threatened group boycotts and other harmful measures to 'threaten, coerce and extort NASCAR' into acquiescing. NASCAR's counterclaim included Polk, who owns 23XI with Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, as a defendant. Polk is depicted as largely responsible for the alleged conspiracy. Polk has been an advisor and confidant to Jordan since the 1990s and served as vice chairman of Charlotte Hornets Sports & Entertainment when Jordan was the team's majority owner. Front Row, 23XI and Polk maintain that NASCAR's counter lawsuit is meritless and a 'retaliatory' filing designed to intimidate them and other race teams. A counterclaim raises the possibility that not only could Front Row and 23XI come up short in proving NASCAR violated antitrust law, but they could be found to have violated antitrust law themselves and thus owe NASCAR damages. Advertisement Bell, whose granting of a preliminary injunction in favor of Front Row and 23XI was recently vacated by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, concluded that NASCAR's counterclaim is sufficient to proceed. Bell determined that NASCAR offers a relevant market for antitrust analysis, namely the market of entry of cars into NASCAR Cup Series races. NASCAR, Bell added, also plausibly alleges teams racing in the Cup Series 'collectively have power in the market,' and the alleged use by Polk, 23XI and Front Row of boycotts and demands for more money could cause NASCAR harm in the market. In other words, Bell found NASCAR to have adequately stated a claim. But Bell emphasized NASCAR has satisfied a 'low bar' for proceeding past a motion to dismiss. Further, he noted that Front Row and 23XI 'have several responses' to NASCAR's allegations. The judge went so far as to suggest those responses might prove persuasive later in the litigation. Even so, a win is a win for NASCAR at this early stage of the counterclaim litigation. The advancement of NASCAR's claims could open new terrain for pretrial discovery. Advertisement In a statement shared with media, 23XI and Front Row attorney Jeffrey Kessler said he and his colleagues are 'disappointed' Bell did not dismiss what Kessler blasts as 'NASCAR's meritless, retaliatory counterclaim.' Kessler added that while Bell didn't side for his clients, the judge's 'recognition of many of our arguments, including the efficiency and necessity of joint negotiations and lack of credible evidence, reinforces our confidence that we will prevail in summary judgment.'
