The field of eight starters all have declared ambitions to finish first amongst equals. The magnificent Ratu First is in fabulous form this season and must be closely watched. Vastly experienced Water Princess is a proper runner that can throttle hard in the last furlong. Beautiful Princess, always prepared well by RX Stable, has a decent chance of topping this race. Do not disregard Dedek Beauty, a quality and hardworking-type, who will start the race at gate 2 advantage. Race 4 (Novice) over 1100m sandtrack has four runners fighting for first position. The smart Mamboo enters this race as favourite. Finishing a close second on 6 April, he can go one better. Honey Prize is well-tuned and always try her best. The consistent Ria Novilla is proven quality and can put up a title challenge as well. Last but not least, Delilah is expected to excel at this level. Today (Saturday), Royal Sabah Turf Club's Sabah Star and Kinabalu Light are expected to improve from their previous outings at Selangor Turf Club. Scheduled at Race 4 (Class 4B) over 1020m, Sabah Star is competitive at this level and has a place chance. In Race 11 (Class 5A) over 1600m, Kinabalu Light can compete for first place but he has to overcome a strong field of Run Buddy Run as favourite, Flying Warrior and Dragon Whisperer. Saturday also includes two exciting Group 2 races from Australia's Eagle Farm track. Race 7 (Group 2) over 1600m features Australia's brightest three-year olds competing for a total prize money of A$350,000. Shangri La Spring is early favourite with Wonder Boy, Boomtown Boss, Our Benefactor going all in. Race 8 (Group 2) over 1200m sees Coleman going head on with a freshened Golden Mile. New Zealand bred Jedibeel will have a crack at these two favourites. Look out for Hidden Wealth with an excellent record of four wins in his last six outings. The local totalisator pools for Australian races are commingled into larger Australian pools which is well-received by local race-goers. Race goers can visit the Tambalang Racecourse, RSTC's off-course centres in Tanjung Aru or Keningau to watch 'live' Australian (Eagle Farm and Hawkesbury) & Selangor races this Saturday, and local, Hong Kong & Selangor races on Sunday. A true fans' player – Liverpool supporters in Singapore pay tribute to late Diogo Jota
SINGAPORE: It was a regular work afternoon for Eddy Chua on Thursday (July 3) when the Singaporean received a Telegram notification that read 'Diogo Jota died'. Stunned, he turned to Google to check if it was true and saw early reports from several outlets claiming the Liverpool footballer had passed away. Soon after, chatter picked up in a WhatsApp group comprising fellow Liverpool fans, and reports from more established sources – Liverpool Echo, Sky News and the BBC – confirmed the worst: the Portuguese forward and his brother Andre Silva, also a professional footballer, had died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain. The authorities said after the Lamborghini they were in had veered off a motorway and burst into flames shortly after midnight on July 3. Chua, 29, found it difficult to return to work after reading the news. The content lead said: 'Throughout the late afternoon, I was just stoning in front of my screen, trying to take in the fact that one of our own just left like that. 'Some of the fans posted Jota's wedding photos to the chat too which made me even more emotional. He had, gotten married and Liverpool had also been making ambitious signings this summer. 'It was supposed to be like a start of something new for Jota, in his career and family. But he is just gone like that.' Like Chua, many Singaporean Reds fans were still coming to terms with the news hours after it broke. Real estate agent Eric Kwek recalled how a month ago, he was in Liverpool among hundreds of thousands of fans, as Jota and the rest of the squad marked the club's 20th top-flight league title with an open-top bus parade through the city. Earlier this week, he had come across clips of fans singing Jota's chant, which he noted was voted one of the most popular among Liverpool supporters. The 47-year-old also expressed his sympathy for Jota's family. Jota and long-time partner Rute Cardoso, who have three children, had just tied the knot less than two weeks ago. One fond memory Kwek has of Jota is his last goal for Liverpool – the winner in a 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over rivals Everton in April. It was a crucial victory in the Reds' title charge as they returned from the international break, bouncing back from their Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain and a League Cup final loss to Newcastle United. Kwek said: 'To lose two games in a week this season was not common for Liverpool so it was quite tough for them to pick up again, especially since they had not secured the title. 'He gave confidence back to the team to pursue the last trophy.' Despite injury setbacks last season, Jota played a key role in the Reds' Premier League title win, making 26 league appearances and contributing six goals and four assists. In all, he recorded 65 goals and 26 assists in 182 Reds matches. Suren Daniel, who is self-employed as a hawker, remembers Jota for his work ethic and humility. The 38-year-old said: 'A true fans' player. Every time he was on the bench, or back from injury, and when he was called upon to perform, he was a player who never let us down and would always give his all without complaining.' Student Megan Foo, 22, shared the same sentiment, saying: 'What stood out most was how he never seemed to disappoint on the pitch... He had this quiet determination and came across as a genuinely humble and grounded guy. I'll always remember him as a clutch, consistent and committed player.' While many praised his abilities on the pitch, what left a lasting impression on Kwang Yu, who runs online sports platform Grandstand alongside his day job in marketing, was Jota's personality. When Liverpool visited Singapore as part of their pre-season tour in 2023, the 32-year-old recalled that Jota took the time to answer questions in the media mixed zone. He said: 'He was one of the players who stopped for a post-match interview by one of our media colleagues. It was very chill, nice chat, (he was) down-to-earth and very humble. 'One of the questions that was asked to him is which fantasy player would he pick for the new season, and cheekily he mentioned himself. 'Very, very nice guy, I would say. Not every player would stop for an interview, so kudos to him.' Benjamin Raj, 32, a senior executive at a statutory board, said the news was a sobering reminder of life's fragility. He said: 'The game has lost a true legend. It just shows you need to enjoy life whenever you can, because you just don't know what's going to happen next.' This weekend, however, he will not be facing Fiji in Australia's only warm-up for the British and Irish Lions test series but instead taking on the tourists in a New South Wales Waratahs shirt. The 29-year-old was released by Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt on Monday in the wake of a Super Rugby season for the Waratahs which, by his own admission, was well below par. Waratahs coach Dan McKellar was grateful for his return and is hoping Tupou on Saturday can show the form which has earned him 58 test caps since his debut against Scotland in 2017. "(I want him) to go out there in set piece first and foremost, back that up with physicality and show the ability to repeat it," McKellar, a former prop himself, said after naming his team on Thursday. "They are the three things I talk to tight forwards about every day. I want him to be really good around the scrum, lineout, maul and then impose himself on the game as we know he can do with ball in hand and without it." Schmidt would no doubt echo those hopes as he prepares a nation which has never been blessed with huge stocks of front-row talent for three tests against the Lions, who lack nothing in that regard. Nicknamed "Tongan Thor" as a rampaging schoolboy forward in New Zealand, Tupou's best moments in a gold shirt earned him one of Rugby Australia's most lucrative contracts, which is reported to earn him A$1 million ($657,300) a year. Injury curtailed his 2023 World Cup but he was close to his powerful best as recently as the end of last year when Australia beat England at Twickenham and ran Ireland close in Dublin. A Tupou intercept in the latter match is still etched in the memory of Andy Farrell, who was finishing up with the Irish before his Lions sabbatical that day. "He's very disruptive, to say the least, and good at what he does," the Lions coach said on Thursday. "Ireland played against him last year and we saw the pace that he had, he went straight up the middle of the field there. He's not just a disruptive scrummager, he's certainly got power and pace on both sides of the ball." Schmidt will name a fresh squad for the Lions test series next Friday and Tupou's performance on Saturday night at Sydney Football Stadium could go a long way to deciding if he is in it. Harimau Malaya drawn with Iran, Tajikistan in CAFA Cup debut
KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya will face a tough challenge in their CAFA Nations Cup debut after being drawn in Group B with hosts Tajikistan, defending champions Iran and Afghanistan. The 2025 edition of the Central Asian Football Association's (CAFA) flagship tournament will run from Aug 29-Sept 8, with Group B matches to be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. World No. 18 Iran are the highest-ranked team in the group, followed by Tajikistan (104), Malaysia (131) and Afghanistan (160). Malaysia open their campaign against Tajikistan on Aug 29, before taking on Iran (Sept 1) and Afghanistan (Sept 4). For the record, Malaysia have not played World Cup-bound Iran since their 2-0 defeat to the Middle East side at the 2007 Asian Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Group A, based in Tashkent, features hosts Uzbekistan (57), Oman (77), Kyrgyzstan (103) and Turkmenistan (142). The group winners will advance to the final in Tashkent on Sept 8, while the runners-up will play for third place on the same day in Dushanbe. Malaysia's first appearance at the CAFA Nations Cup comes at a time when the team are starting to show promise under new coach Peter Cklamovski. The Australian has overseen back-to-back over Nepal (2-0) and Vietnam (4-0) in the Asian Cup qualifiers and will use the tournament as preparation for upcoming qualifying matches against Laos — away on Oct 9 and at home on Oct 14. "Our debut in the CAFA Nations Cup marks another important chapter for Harimau Malaya on the international stage. With the right preparation, unity, and belief, the squad will rise to the challenge and make the country proud," said the national team in a statement on Instagram.
