Engineers build 30-feet-long all-glass bridge using 6,000-year-old technique

Architect and structural engineer Masoud Akbarzadeh has challenged conventional wisdom by constructing a bridge from a material deemed unsuitable: glass.
The architect has created a 30-foot-long bridge built entirely of interlocking 16-millimeter (0.63 inches) hollow glass pieces. It looks incredibly fragile and beautiful, like a shimmering, light-filled, translucent structure.
"All these pieces alone, hollow glass units, might seem quite brittle—and they are, but depending on how you design to put these glass units together, they start relying on each other, and the units' assembly establishes a path for the load to be transferred efficiently. Thus, the bridge gains strength as a whole," said Akbarzadeh, an associate professor of architecture at the Weitzman School of Design.
Over three weeks in 2024, the team constructed this final structure, dubbed 'Glass Bridge: The Penn Monument for Hope.'
The journey to create this masterpiece was anything but simple. It took six years of planning, drafting, and revising.
The bridge draws on millennia-old engineering and architectural principles, particularly those associated with funicular design. This means the bridge is built to naturally handle forces, primarily using compression (pushing forces) to stay strong and stable.
This concept, focused on balancing forces through arches and vaults, was employed as far back as 4000 BCE by the Mesopotamians and later by the Romans in their iconic structures.
The first step was a modest but crucial 10-foot prototype, a proving ground for their digital machinations. The bridge prototype used hollow glass units, which interlocked to form the bridge's arch. A major challenge was finding a way to connect the glass pieces without causing them to crack.
Eventually, structural double-sided VHB tape and precision-cut acrylic connectors were used. Acrylic connectors joined the glass units, ensuring accurate alignment and load transfer.
In stress testing, this prototype glass unit successfully withstood a significant amount of compressive force (41.6 kilopounds).
"This approach permitted the necessary tolerance and ease of assembly without compromising the integrity of the glass," said Yao Lu, a core member of the design team.
Villanova University helped the team find a material to prevent glass pieces from cracking when they are touched. They discovered that polyvinyl butyral (PVB), commonly used in safety glass, worked perfectly as an interface material.
This laminate material acted as a buffer between glass modules, preventing direct contact and stress concentrations.
Building the glass bridge required far greater precision than a standard bridge.
The steel or concrete may allow for slight imperfections, but the glass units had to fit together with near-perfect accuracy — with a tolerance of only 0.1 millimeters. This incredibly tight margin of error made the construction extremely challenging.
"But with these connectors, every cut, every angle, every dimension had to be accurate within 0.1 millimeters," Akbarzadeh said.
"When you're dealing with 124 separate glass units, even the tiniest misalignment can multiply across the entire span. If we didn't maintain that level of precision, the whole structure could have collapsed under its own weight," he added in the press release.
To reach the required precision, the team partnered with firms located in Germany and China.
On November 30th, after a week of long days and late nights, the bridge stood tall.
The Glass Bridge is currently on exhibit at the Corning Museum of Glass until September 1st. Before the exhibit opened, Greenhouse Media filmed the bridge's construction and interviewed the team, creating a documentary about the project.
The bridge construction has been reported in the journal Engineering Structures.

According to a new study published in the journal PLOS One, the donkeys were likely used for agricultural labor and trade, and their sacrifice may have been a display of wealth and social status. The researchers found that the donkeys were all female, in their prime age, and had been buried with their legs tied together. The discovery of the donkeys' remains has shed new light on the ritual practices of the ancient Canaanites, who inhabited the region during the Early Bronze Age III (circa 2900 to 2550 BCE). The researchers believe that the donkeys' Egyptian origin may indicate that their owners were merchants and traders who had connections with Egypt. Donkey remains have been consistently found at ancient Gath. After finding a decapitated donkey in 2010, with its head having been 'fully cut off and carefully placed on the abdomen facing in the opposite direction' according to the study, researchers continued searching for other donkeys in the area. Using chemical analysis and testing isotopes and the donkey's tooth enamel, researchers determined the donkey was originally from the Nile Valley. These results were also published in PLOS One in 2016. Researchers added that the choice to sacrifice a donkey, rather than any other animal, at the time was likely a sign of power and wealth, based on the demand for the animal in such a critical transportation role. Donkeys and similar animals were used in the ancient world primarily for hard agricultural labor. This included, but was not limited to, plowing and pulling heavy loads, as well as transportation of goods. These donkeys were also female, which was particularly valuable, and were believed to be replaceable by the sacrificing parties, according to the recently published study. All of their skulls pointed eastward, and their front and back legs had been tied together. Finding the four sacrificial animals depicts the mules' vital roles in both ritual practices and the economy. 'This finding highlights the importance of donkeys in the ancient world, not only for economic and trade purposes but also for ritual practices,' Elizabeth Arnold, an anthropologist and environmental archaeologist at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, told LiveScience. The researchers used isotopic analysis to help determine the origin of the donkeys, and the results revealed that they had lived in the Nile Valley. This discovery suggests that the donkeys were brought to ancient Gath from Egypt, likely as part of a trade or economic exchange. The study's findings provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of ancient animals and their role in human society. As the researchers continue to study the remains of the donkeys, they hope to learn more about the complex relationships between humans and animals in the ancient world.

Divers exploring the centuries-old Antikythera wreck retrieved intact pieces of the ship and found artifacts that shed light on life aboard the craft. The Antikythera shipwreck dates back to the first century, according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The wreck site is near Crete. The ship was a trading or cargo vessel. First discovered in the spring of 1900, it has been the subject of multiple investigations since then. Previously, divers found life-size marble statues of horses, jewelry and hundreds of works of art and other artifacts. Human remains were also found aboard the ship in the 1970s. The most recent expedition was led by the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece and took place between May and June 2025, according to a news release. One of the main goals of the expedition was to retrieve three outer planks joined to the ship's internal frame. This "rare set" of hull fragments was found in 2024, but could not be removed from the wreck until this dive, the school said. The recovery of the planks and frame confirm the construction method used to create the ship, and offers "valuable insight into ancient naval techniques," the school said. The wood itself appears to be elm and oak and may date back as far as 235 BCE, the school said. The construction method used, where the outer hull is built before the internal parts of the ship, dates to between the fourth and first century BCE. It's not clear if the pieces are from the ship's upper segment, a smaller vessel or a repair that may have been done. Researchers are studying the pieces to learn more about them, the school said. The divers also found small fragments of a nude male statue. The statue's marble base and part of the left leg was clearly identified. Other fragments are trapped within the wreck site and cannot currently be extracted, the school said. A terracotta mortar used for crushing and mixing food was also found in the wreck. Meanwhile, a number of Chian amphorae, a type of Ancient Greek jar used for storage and transport, were found "spread across two distinct zones of the wreck," the school said. The divers exploring the wreck had to take extra steps to ensure they could safely search the area, the school said. The wreck is about 140 to 170 feet below the surface, which is too deep for standard scuba diving but too shallow for remotely-operated vehicles, according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The Swiss School of Archaeology divers used closed-circuit rebreathers with gas mixes to ensure they could safely explore the wreck. Underwater drones also monitored the dive in real-time. On Tuesday, Colossal Biosciences announced their plans to bring back the tallest bird that ever lived, which has been extinct for nearly 600 years. The giant moa — a husky, wingless bird that could stand almost 12 feet tall — once booked it across New Zealand's landscapes on legs that looked like a cross between an overgrown chicken and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The moa has become closely linked with New Zealanders' cultural identity, and for the Māori, the nation's indigenous Polynseian people, it's a symbol of resourcefulness, as well as a reminder of the importance of caring for the environment. Colossal hopes to welcome the first new moas within five to 10 years, after they finish collecting enough ancient DNA samples to sequence the bird's genome. This isn't the first such announcement for the biosciences startup, which recently revealed they'd created three living dire wolves, a species not seen since roughly 10,000 BCE. In April, they debuted their dire wolf pups, which were created by editing parts of genomes sequenced from ancient DNA fragments into the genome of gray wolves, giving them dire wolf attributes. This prompted some in the scientific community to say they weren't actually dire wolves, just genetically-modified gray wolves with a stellar PR team. Colossal's chief science officer Beth Shapiro responded to taxonomical criticism by arguing that species are categories we use to group animals with similar attributes: 'If it looks like a dire wolf and it acts like a dire wolf, I'm gonna call it a dire wolf,' she told Rolling Stone at the time. The company's 'de-extinction' announcements, as the company calls their efforts to create animals with the attributes of species that have died off, have also attracted some major celebrity investors. While the dire wolves were promoted by investor George R.R. Martin, this latest project started with a pitch from Lord of Rings director and unofficial New Zealand tourism czar Peter Jackson, whose films introduced the world to the stunning mountain ranges and grassy plains of his homeland. He had long dreamed of bringing back the moa, right alongside wishing for personal submarines and jetpacks. 'Growing up in New Zealand, where the moa is such a predominant part of our national identity and culture, it was just like, wouldn't it be fantastic if the moa could be brought back?' he tells Rolling Stone. 'For decades, it seemed like a harebrained thought, just a pie in the sky. But then, when I spoke with Colossal for the first time a couple of years ago, I got the distinct impression that such a thing was no longer harebrained.' Jackson suggested adding the moa to their roster for de-extinction. He also encouraged a partnership between Colossal and the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre at the University of Canterbury, a leading institute of Māori indigenous scholarship in the region. According to Ngāi Tahu Research Centre director Mike Stevens, hunting the moa for food — and using its bones and feathers for tools and decoration — played a crucial role in helping the Māori people adapt to living in New Zealand after they migrated from Polynesia in the 1300s. '[The moa was] the key resource that allowed this relatively small founding population to survive and grow and flourish,' Stevens says. The Ngāi Tahu are the principal Māori tribe of the southern region of New Zealand — home to the South Island giant moa, the largest of the nine moa species Colossal plans to restore over the next five to 10 years. According to Māori lore, the 500-pound herbivores were fast runners who, once cornered, would defend themselves by kicking with those dino-chicken legs. Over time, the Māori's rate of harvesting the moa caught up with the bird's population — in part because crops grew and replenished themselves less quickly in New Zealand's subtropical climate than in the tropical Polynesian islands. '[The Māori] figured out that these islands offered a 'fragile plenty,' to borrow a phrase from one of the esteemed archeologists within our tribe,' Stevens says, referring to the nation's abundant but vulnerable ecosystem. After millions of years of shaping the nation's grasslands and forests through their feeding habits and seed dispersal, the moa went extinct roughly 150 years after the Māori arrived. In researching the moa through their partnership with Colossal, Stevens sees an opportunity for the Māori people to make new discoveries about themselves. 'We'll learn more about our earlier ancestors and their distinct interactions with this landscape,' he says. 'The way nature and culture continually shape one another.' For the next six months, Colossal scientists and archeologists from the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre will focus on collecting ancient DNA samples. They have recently been searching for moa fossils in New Zealand caves, and they've already managed to extract around two dozen samples from Jackson's personal collection of more than 300 moa fossils. They'll combine these with some samples from the Canterbury Museum in their quest to have enough DNA to begin building moa genomes for all nine species — the first of which they aim to complete in the summer of 2026. In the meantime, they've already built a reference genome of the tinamou, a South American bird thought to be the moa's closest living relative. Colossal CEO Ben Lamm says the partnership with the research center signals a new step in the company's work with indigenous groups. 'The stewards and the people of this land, the Māori, inviting us in, and working with them in a true collaborative fashion, where the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre is the driver of the project is not a way we've ever collaborated before,' he says. 'This is a long term partnership. We have gone so deep now in not just the ecological or environmental benefit of this species, but in the cultural history, it's been awesome.'
