Grinch finally pinched for Christmas Day burglary
The Grinch of Grange St has finally been apprehended months after she dampened festive spirits by allegedly burgling a Dunedin home on Christmas Day.
The 39-year-old woman was arrested in a vehicle that was stopped in Butts Rd, north Dunedin, at about 3.40am this morning, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.
On Christmas Day last year, the woman allegedly walked into a Grange St home and stole multiple items, including a wallet and a set of keys, before attempting to try and use one of the credit cards in the wallet for online shopping.
She tried shopping with multiple online retailers but all failed as the card had been cancelled, Snr Sgt Bond said.
Later, on May 25, the woman rummaged through a mailbox in Grange St before stealing an envelope that contained a credit card.
She then allegedly used that card to go on a shopping spree in the city.
The next day, she did the same porch pirate routine by stealing more mail from a letterbox in Ascot St, St Kilda.
This morning, she was arrested and charged with burglary, theft of property, and she received two charges for taking, obtaining and then using credit cards.
She would appear in Dunedin District Court this morning.

Police car joyrider back in jail for car-related crimes

PHOTO: ROB KIDD A man who made headlines for taking a police car on a 270km joyride is back behind bars after only a few weeks of freedom. Jesse Daniel Nash, 43, served every day of a five-year sentence following a 2020 incident in which he pointed a firearm at a police officer in Central Otago before embarking on a wild journey through the region. He was released from the Otago Corrections Facility in December, but his time on the outside was short-lived. On January 31, there was a co-ordinated burglary of a Mosgiel car yard in the early hours of the morning in which five vehicles and various car parts were stolen. One of those vehicles was a grey Audi A3. Two days later, Nash was captured on CCTV at a Dunedin petrol station filling up with $168 of fuel and driving off without paying. Over the next fortnight, the defendant repeated the act five more times, ripping off service stations in Dunedin and Mataura for more than $1000. "He must've been doing a fair amount of driving," Crown prosecutor Craig Power suggested. On February 10, police found the Audi in Belleknowes complete with false registration plates and a new paint job. Inside were two women. Nash had "run off", they told officers, but it did not take much sleuthing to prove he had been behind the wheel. Inside the vehicle was the defendant's wallet, containing his driver's licence, as well as court and Probation documents addressed to him. It was not the first time Nash had shown off his elusiveness. During the 2020 escapade, the defendant travelled from the Cromwell Gorge to Milton before his vehicle was spiked by police. While it stopped the prolonged pursuit, Nash gave officers the slip and spent the night hiding in an unoccupied property. He was arrested the following morning when he tried to organise someone to pick him up. Judge Emma Smith said Nash's previous convictions were "particularly bad". But the man said he wanted to put his crimes behind him. "I want to get out of the system," he said. "I want to grow up and be a man." Nash had previously been jailed for six months for the petrol thefts; Judge Smith added another six months for receiving the stolen vehicle.

Mechanical Fail Lands Driver In Court
A driver who attempted to evade Police in a stolen vehicle will now face court. At about 3.35am, a Police unit observed a stolen Honda Fit travelling at high speed on Fir Street, Waterview. Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Wayne Kitcher, says a short time later the vehicle stopped on Daventry Street and two Police units attempted to block the vehicle in. 'The vehicle has stopped briefly before mounting the curb and taking off at high speed.' He says Police did not pursue the vehicle and instead it was monitored by cameras as it entered the Northwestern Motorway. 'The vehicle has then taken the Southern Motorway, where it exited at Market Road and continued through Greenlane and Onehunga before coming to a stop on Manukau Road, Epsom, where it appeared to suffer a mechanical issue. 'Officers have blocked the vehicle in and taken the driver into custody without incident,' Inspector Kitcher says. 'This is a great example of frontline Police resources working together to respond to any events that occur.' A 39-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court on 17 July charged with failing to remain, receiving property and possession of methamphetamine.
