This year, Marvel introduces its first family to the MCU in the studio's biggest film of the year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But as well as adding a flurry of new characters to the extended universe and setting up Avengers: Doomsday, the upcoming movie also has the chance to gain the studio a whole new audience by wiping the slate clean, and perhaps alleviating some of that superhero fatigue felt by many an old Marvel head.
Let's face it, keeping up with the MCU feels a lot like homework nowadays. If you want to see a new Marvel movie heading to theaters, or a show coming to Disney Plus, there's a good chance you'll need to have watched multiple different projects beforehand to understand references, or recognise characters and cameos. But in the real world, some people just don't have the time to keep up with everything.
In this respect, being a Marvel fan has become exclusive and simply not accessible to everyone. That's why I think that Fantastic Four is the perfect opportunity for new and old fans to get (re)acquainted with the MCU. The movie is finally wiping the slate clean, bringing new characters, a fresh '60s world, and new villains to the MCU so that you can fall in love with Marvel all over again, just in time for Doomsday.
Wiping the slate clean
Starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/Thing, The Fantastic Four follows Marvel's first family at the height of their popularity, living in a retro-futuristic '60s America. However, their perfect world comes crashing down when Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) arrives to warn them that their 'planet has been marked for death' and will soon be devoured by Galactus (Ralph Ineson).
As exciting as that sounds, the most important detail of The Fantastic Four: First Steps is that it more or less acts as a stand-alone movie. Meaning, you don't really have to watch anything before you go and see it in the cinema. This will be music to many a prospective viewer's ears. Especially those who haven't been keeping up with Marvel's numerous side-stories and have been patiently waiting for a way back into the MCU.
For me, I loved the OG Marvel movies whilst growing up, from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies to the good ol' Fox days of X-Men and the '00s Fantastic Four flicks. However, by involving myself in other genres and franchises, I lost my way with Marvel, and before I knew it, I was trying to keep up with new releases but had no idea what was going on. So, like many others, I just stopped keeping up with it. In short, I contracted a terrible case of superhero fatigue.
Could The Fantastic Four: First Steps cure superhero fatigue?
From speaking with other ex-Marvel lovers and film buffs, I know I am not alone in feeling this way. I think this is where the phenomenon of 'superhero fatigue' or 'superhero exhaustion' comes from. Audiences don't want their viewing experiences to feel like work. And when you have to dedicate huge chunks of time watching other projects just to be able to enjoy one single film, it feels like a task, and this can be daunting for new fans, especially.
In saying this, I wonder, could Fantastic Four: First Steps be the cure for Marvel? We have seen with James Gunn's Superman just how a more-or-less stand-alone superhero flick can stir up a large audience and attract viewers who perhaps don't usually opt to see comic book movies on the big screen. Drawing in a bigger crowd is surely Marvel's goal after this year's releases. Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World didn't exactly knock it out of the park at the box office, for Marvel movies, that is.
Looking forward to Doomsday
Wrangling that wider audience would also mean that there would be more eyes on Marvel's huge upcoming event, Avengers: Doomsday. The studio has really thrown everything it has at the wall with this one, by welcoming back a giant list of OG Marvel characters such as Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Alan Cummings' Nightcrawler, as well as Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Tom Hiddleston's Loki.
Marvel is even bringing back its biggest star, Robert Downey Jr. But as we all know, his character Iron Man sacrificed his life in Avengers: Endgame. But that's not a bother for the Multiverse, as RDJ will be playing a brand new character, villain Doctor Doom. What's more is that the new Fantastic Four and The New Avengers will also play a vital role in the movie. I'm seeing a 'new' theme here, which is perfect for us returning fans.
So what do you say? Will you give Marvel another chance? I will certainly be going to see The Fantastic Four: First Steps to meet the MCU's First Family. And who knows, maybe the movie will ignite my passion for all things MCU and spur me on to catch up on some more of the studio's recent projects.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 24 in the UK and July 25 in the US as part of Marvel Phase 6. For more, check out our guide on how to watch the Marvel movies in order, and keep up with all the other upcoming Marvel movies and shows.

New on HBO Max in August 2025 — all the new shows and movies to watch

HBO Max is back with another wave of new releases to keep you entertained throughout August. This month's batch includes new movies (including one with "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" star Pedro Pascal), plus plenty of library additions, documentaries, live sports and, of course, the very welcome return of a DC star: John Cena. Yes, after being away from our screens for far too long, "Peacemaker" season 2 is finally returning to the streaming service (after briefly popping up in James Gunn's "Superman"), for what looks to be another blast of fun. Below, you can find my top picks for the month, plus a comprehensive list of everything new on HBO Max in August 2025. And if you're not seeing much you want to watch, check out our best movies on HBO Max for more top streaming recommendations. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's "Freaky Tales" is an anthology movie all based on real events and real locations from Oakland, California, in 1987. Across one night, it sketches four scrappy stories about a variety of colorful characters — including an NBA star, a female rap duo, punk teens, and a career crook who wants to leave his criminal life behind, among others — with a genre movie feel and the odd shock of ultra-violence. "Freaky Tales" is fun, '80s-inflected stuff that some HBO Max subscribers are going to really get a kick out of. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Stream on HBO Max from August 8 If you're looking for some family entertainment this month, Isaiah Saxon's fantasy adventure "The Legend of Ochi" seems a solid choice. This wondrous watch from A24 whisks us off to a small village on the island of Carpathia, where we meet Yuri (Helena Zengel), a young girl who is raised to fear creatures known as "the Ochi." When she encounters a lost baby, Ochi, she embarks on a journey to take him back home. It wasn't universally loved (it's 75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and drew criticism for having a slightness in the character/story departments, but for its impressive visuals and brilliant puppetry values, I think "The Legend of Ochi" warrants a watch. Stream on HBO Max from August 15 "Peacemaker" exploded onto the scene in 2022 as a raucous action comedy spinoff from James Gunn's pre-DCU 2021 hit, "The Suicide Squad" that gave John Cena's jingoistic antihero the limelight. The result? An utterly hilarious, hugely entertaining blood-soaked romp. Season 2 sees him discovering an alternate world where life is everything that Chris Smith/Peacemaker could want. The problem is, that discovery also forces him to face his own traumatic past. Judging by the teaser we've seen, that same winning vibe's been preserved, and then some, and I can't wait to see Peacemaker and his pals back in action. Barbenheimer's Epic Double Feature Happened 2 Years Ago, And I'm Worried I'll Never Get That Same Experience

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Back in 2023, there was a time when it felt as if all was right with the world, and that, my friends, was Barbenheimer. While the 2025 movie schedule has been filled to the brim with great releases, I really don't think we're going to get another time like this, and that worries me. It's been two years. I know, it's hard to believe it, but it has, and it honestly feels like a lifetime at this point. We have had some major releases come out since then, such as the latest Superman, which turned me into a fan. Or we could point to Wicked, which took over the world for a month or two. However, nothing has hit quite as hard as when these two films – Barbie and Oppenheimer – were released simultaneously. And honestly, I don't think we're going to get another instance like this, at least for a long time. Barbenheimer Was Perfectly Timed During The Summer I think a big reason why Barbenheimer was such a success was that both of these releases were planned at the perfect time – right in the middle of summer. I always feel that the most successful blockbusters tend to happen at this point, and it's clear both of these, by their box office amounts, did incredibly well. Barbie earned well over $1 billion, and Oppenheimer came really close to the mark, as did a rated-R movie. However, because many people had a day off or two during this time, seeing the double feature was that much easier. The Amount Of Marketing For Both Was Done Amazingly Well And Spawned An Era Unlike Any Other Another significant factor contributing to this success is that the marketing teams were on point. We all already knew Christopher Nolan's best films. We were all already aware of the pull Barbie had as a toy. However, the fact that these two were eventually marketed together as a double feature paved the way for its success. They had their marketing – it was practically pink mania for months with Barbie. However, I think it worked best when people combined the films into one prominent double feature, allowing fans to dress up for each and go out with their friends, making it a whole event rather than just an outing or a date. That's the key in marketing here. The Fanbases Somehow Collided In A Way Unlike Ever Before, And I Don't Think We'll Get That Again The beauty of this is that Barbenheimer is special. Something like this has happened before, where two totally conflicting genres released major films on the same day – The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia!, a movie I rewatch all the time – but that was never as grand an event. The same thing happened with the release of Wicked and Gladiator, and how marketing teams tried to make it the new Barbenheimer, but it just didn't work – even if both films did very well. I think Barbenheimer is a one-and-done, and that does sadden me. There was something so…magical about this time, as cheesy as that sounds. The idea of two completely different fan bases coming together to celebrate films, in two totally different styles, is something that I will always love and never forget. The hype that led up to this made it even more enjoyable, and attending the double feature with my friends and a crowd of people who just loved movies was unlike any other. Maybe one day we'll get another Barbenheimer. But you know what? I'm happy with it living in my memory, even if I feel that we're never going to get another time like this one. Anthony Mackie shares his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," as quoted from that comic book movie set in the universe down the street from the MCU. By the end of next year, Robert Downey Jr. will have done both when he finally arrives in theaters as the leader of Latveria and metal-plated bad guy, Victor von Doom. Bringing back the star power and charisma he let rip as Iron Man and using it for evil in the franchise he helped build, the excitement levels are high as to what kind of Doctor Doom he'll be delivering in the upcoming movie. Whatever it ends up being, though, the new Captain America he'll be facing off against welcomes his return. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, current Captain America Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on Downey returning to the MCU and expressed his gratitude for seeing it happen. 'You know, the fun part is Robert Downey Jr. was such an integral part of the beginning of my career at Marvel," he confessed. "It's great to have him back and continue the legacy he built with the MCU.' By the sounds of things, it almost feels like he never left after his original Iron Avenger, Tony Stark, made the killer snap that brought back half the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. Not only working with stars he left behind in the 2019 film, Downey is also welcoming in the newcomers to the MCU that are set to join in on this super-sized endeavor. Speaking to The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, The Fantastic Four: First Steps star discussed what it was like to see the original star of the MCU in action and behind the scenes. 'He's the most incredible human being—soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies, you know," she explained. "And a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's just doing the most amazing work.' Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a while to see this amazing work in action when Avengers: Doomsday lands in theaters on December 18, 2026.
