Race-by-race tips and previews for Sunday's meeting at Wagga

Selections based on a soft track.
Race 1
5. Al Flores is a former Ron Quinton-trained galloper out of group 1-winning mare Dixie Blossoms. She ran second at Goulburn last time out and looks set to break through in this event. 14. Tessarion debuted with a third when not beaten far and is not out of this. 10. Tippytay was midfield at Goulburn when last produced and has claims here from the inside gate. 7. Hardly Fortunate finished a close-up second at Wagga on debut and only needs to run up to that to be hard to hold out again.
How to play it: Al Flores WIN.
Race 2
2. Badhatharry had three trials before making his debut. He finished fourth at the Sapphire Coast at his first start and followed that up with a last-start fifth at the same track when beaten just over four lengths. He can find his best form here. 10. Miss Pepeha has been placed in each of her latest two starts. She is heading in the right direction and can show up here. 11. Pride Of Jezza finished second at Corowa two starts ago. He was safely held at the same track last time out but can improve here. 5. Riverine Waltz is on debut here from the inside gate. She's had a trial and a jumpout and is poised to run well.
How to play it: Badhatharry WIN.
Race 3
1. Astern Torch has only won one race. That was at his latest start at this track when racing on the speed and fighting on well. He's drawn well here and should get a good run in transit again. 9. Perfume River is a last-start Swan Hill winner that ran well at Corowa before that. She should run well here again. 10. Star Bling is a last start placegetter at the Sapphire Coast and she is set to perform well again here. 11. Doc March has been racing well with two seconds and two fourths from his last four starts. Another forward showing is on the cards here.
How to play it: Astern Torch EACH WAY.
Race 4
3. Elastane Miss is a local galloper that ran second on debut at Albury. She followed that up with an on-speed victory at Albury. She ran second at Albury after that and then finished second at this track last time out in another sound display. She can bounce back to winning form here. 2. Christmas Star has won two of her latest four starts, scoring at Gundagai and the Acton track at Canberra. She comes into this on the back of a last-start third at Canberra. 7. Loch Erin was a Goulburn winner last November and resumes here. 10. Imabarbiegirl is a winner of one of four starts and resumed from a spell at this track with a third earlier in the month.
How to play it: Elastane Miss WIN.

Dale puts faith in hoop Heywood to help Al Flores break duck at Goulburn

Local trainer Matthew Dale will rely on jockey Nick Heywood to get promising mare Al Flores to break through with an overdue victory at Goulburn on Tuesday when she contests the GG Engineering Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1200m). The former Ron Quinton-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel and Dixie Blossoms has had two starts since joining the Dale stable and finished second in each of them at Goulburn and Wagga. She previously finished third three times when in the care of Quinton. Heywood was aboard Al Flores when she resumed with her second at Goulburn at the end of May, while Pierre Boudvillain took the reins when she ran second as favourite at Wagga on June 22. Heywood and Al Flores are reunited in Tuesday's $30,000 event, while the jockey also has two other rides at the Goulburn meeting in the shape of Thoughtful for Dale in the Doyles Seafood Restaurant Benchmark 58 Handicap (1100m), and Wexford Miss for Danielle Seib in The Country Outfitters Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m). In addition to Al Flores and Thoughtful, Dale has one other runner at Goulburn with last start Wagga winner Loch Erin contesting the Laterals Accounting Benchmark 66 Handicap (1200m) with Ashley Morgan taking the ride. Loading Jockey Alysha Collett has a handy book of three rides at Goulburn, starting with the Blake Ryan prepared Calgary King, which lines up in Loch Erin's event. Calgary King was placed in two Kembla Grange runs after a spell before a last start Hawkesbury flop. Collett will also be on the Richard and Will Freedman trained Crimson Wings in the Divalls Earthmoving Maiden Handicap (1100m), while her last mount of the afternoon is the Matthew Smith runner Omaha Sand in the Kilpatrick Metal Recyclers Maiden Plate (1600m). Crimson Wings is on debut after winning a recent trial at Canterbury. Omaha Sand has been midfield in two runs at Scone and Wyong since resuming from a spell.

Yellow Sam charges home to win at Caulfield and earn crack at Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes

Yellow Sam has earned a shot at the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) next month at Caulfield with a strong win on Saturday. The Lindsey Smith-trained mare finished powerfully under jockey Fred Kersley to overhaul Lim's Saltoro, well-backed favourite The Open and Rheinberg. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'We thought this craziness she'd go to the Bletchingly with no weight,' Smith said. 'We'll throw a few darts and then if she competed well she'd go to the (PB Lawrence).' Yellow Sam rounded the bend with work to do and duly saluted second-up. Yellow Sam won the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill the start prior, first-up from a long break after a health setback last year – a benign tumour in her hind gut. 'It's easier to train fast horses, I've got a few slower ones,' Smith said. 'Courageous horse, has been from the day dot … great will to win, as I've said many times, will maybe outdoes ability sometimes.' Kersley praised Yellow Sam. 'She has got better, she's probably the ultimate racehorse,' Kersley said. 'She's a professional, probably one of the gutsiest horses I've had the pleasure to do anything with. 'Time and time again she's come back, a filly, a mare, and she's held the form.' Earlier on the card, former international Sayedaty Sadaty, trained by Ciaron Maher, opened his Australian account with victory in the 2000m Quality Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday. Sayedaty Sadaty travelled outside leader Amberite and kicked clear in the straight to win third-up after consecutive 1800m placings at Sandown. Unfortunately, the race was marred by separate incidents in the straight. Rolls, trained by Maddie Raymond and Patrick Bell, failed to finish due to a severe leg fracture. Racing Victoria confirmed the gelding was humanely euthanized by on-course veterinarians. Jockey Harry Grace was taken to hospital with a sore hand and some general pain. Dakotah Keane was also dislodged from her mount, King Frankel, in the straight. Thankfully, Keane and King Frankel avoided injury. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Zahra sets sail for big spring Flemington trainer Simon Zahra has spring ambitions exciting Xarpo after the 'beast' responded to challengers at Caulfield on Saturday. Xarpo, expertly handled by apprentice jockey Ryan Houston, found the front early in the straight as favourite Mercurial Lady mounted a case. Xarpo lifted again to hold a margin, while Illyivy bloused Mercurial Lady for second and third. 'They were entitled to beat her,' Zahra said. 'She was a bit underdone, first-up 1200m, most of them had a run under their belt, so it's exciting.' Zahra said Xarpo would get to a mile in the spring. 'She's won over 1400m but I reckon she's a miler, last preparation she just missed the starts, did everything wrong, we got away with that win at Flemington,' Zahra said. 'To see her now compared to what she was six months ago just a different horse.' Xarpo, a rising four-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun, has won three of six starts to date. 'We gave her a nice prep last time, she wasn't quite furnished and by the end she was starting to switch on,' Zahra said. 'She returned to the stable an absolute beast (after her spell) … we were pretty confident she would come here today and run pretty well. 'There's a bit of spring fortune we want to target … a complete different horse (now), like a big strong mare and she's starting to do everything right.' Zahra deferred spring plans until after Xarpo's next run, potentially at Caulfield in a fortnight or Flemington in three weeks. 'If she can perform well there we'll freshen her up,' Zahra said.
