Punjab: To boost tourism: ₹25cr heritage project approved for Hussainiwala

The Punjab Heritage & Tourism Promotion Board (PHTPB) has received administrative approval of ₹24.99 crore for the development of the Cultural and Heritage Stretch at the Hussainiwala border in Ferozepur. The project, sanctioned under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, aims to elevate the site into a world-class tourist destination and boost the tourism potential of the border district. Sanjeev Tiwari, director, Punjab tourism, said the initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to develop infrastructure, enhance beautification, promote digital engagement and empower local communities. He stated that ₹23.66 crore has been allocated specifically for Destination Management Interventions, which include civil works such as the construction of a thematic gate, development of footpaths and roads, and MS structural work estimated at ₹843.09 lakh. An additional ₹625.80 lakh has been set aside for streetscape development featuring digital projections to enrich the visitor experience, he said.
The project also includes the installation of a ₹55 lakh fountain system, park beautification and landscaping works costing ₹380.60 lakh, and upgrades to electrical infrastructure worth ₹334.27 lakh. For security and surveillance, CCTV cameras will be installed at a cost of ₹63.51 lakh.
'Sustainability is central to this initiative, with ₹31.90 lakh earmarked for an on-grid solar plant and RO water system under Green Tourism Interventions. To boost digital connectivity and visitor engagement, ₹51.32 lakh has been allotted for the development of a dedicated website and mobile application,' Tiwari said.
'To promote inclusive development and local economic participation, ₹25 lakh each has been earmarked for Skilling Interventions, including training and capacity building, and Tourism MSME Interventions, such as sensitization workshops for local entrepreneurs and service providers,' he added.
Dr Harsh Bhola, a leading surgeon from the region, called the project a transformative step that will elevate Ferozepur's image and attract national and international tourists. He said the improved infrastructure and focus on heritage-centric experiences will position the district as a vibrant tourism hub.
Puneet Jain, a young entrepreneur from Zira, said Hussainiwala's patriotic and historical importance makes it a natural draw for tourists. 'The site, which includes the National Martyrs Memorial—where freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev are cremated—already attracts visitors. The daily Indo-Pak Beating Retreat ceremony also draws hundreds of visitors. Recent additions like the VR museum and heritage train simulation have further enhanced the location's appeal.

Tourism Dept. invites applications for setting up homestays in tribal areas

The Tourism Department has invited applications to set up homestays in tribal villages under the Central government's project – Development of Homestays in Tribal Areas. The Ministry of Tourism has taken up this project as part of the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA). In a press release, Shivamogga district administration, on Sunday, said that the beneficiaries selected under this project get a subsidy of upto ₹5 lakh per project. In Shivamogga district, Virupinakoppa of Muddinakoppa gram panchayat and Sadashivapura of B. Beeranahalli panchayat have been selected for the project. The beneficiaries get up to ₹5 lakh to set up homestays and up to ₹3 lakh for renovation. The Union Cabinet approved the PMJUGA on September 18, 2024. Under this mission, the Ministry of Tourism proposed development of tribal homes. It proposes to develop 1,000 homestays in the country. The objective of the scheme is to promote responsible tourism and enhance livelihood opportunities for tribal communities. The people who are interested in availing of the benefits of the scheme can submit applications before August 11, along with documents, including a caste certificate, Aadhar card, house documents, photo, and no-objection certificate from the gram panchayat. IIM Mumbai inks pact with CIL for specialised Executive Post Graduate Program

The Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) on Saturday said it has inked an agreement with Coal India Limited (CIL) for the second edition of its specialised Executive Post Graduate Program (PGPEx) for Logistics and Operations Excellence through Digitisation. 'We have renewed the agreement with CIL for the second batch. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), IIM Mumbai will provide CIL executives important skills in logistics, supply chain management and digital transformation,' the institute's director Prof Manoj K Tiwari said. The program will focus on building future-ready capabilities in logistics, supply chain management, and digital transformation, aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening strategic leadership across the organisation, he said. The one year program will be in a blended format, 60 per cent of which will be online and 40 per cent will be through physical attendance that will be held in the institute's satellite campus in Angul in Odisha, he added. This specialised program, designed for executives of Coal India and its subsidiaries, will begin in September and has a capacity of 40 students, Prof Tiwari added. Meanwhile,IIM Mumbai has proposed the setting up of a new satellite campus in or around Mumbai. The proposal, submitted to the Maharashtra Government, aligns with the state's visionary 'Viksit Maharashtra 2047' roadmap and is set to propel Mumbai as a global nerve centre for finance, policy, technology, and academic excellence, an IIM Mumbai statement said. The proposed satellite campus seeks to offer a suite of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes with a sharp focus on disciplines such as economics, accounting and finance, technology and data science, and law and regulation. This strategic initiative is aimed at integrating interdisciplinary research with future-ready pedagogy, in line with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which champions flexibility, innovation, and holistic development in higher education.
