May 28, 2025 - Ottawa, ON - National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
The Military Police Complaints Commission (MPCC) plays a vital role in investigating Military Police (MP) interference complaints, reviewing closed and concluded public complaints led by the Military Police at the request of complainants, and leading public interest investigations and hearings. The Canadian Forces Provost Marshal (CFPM) is fully committed to, and supportive of the MPCC's mandate, within the legislative framework afforded under Part IV of the National Defence Act .
A public complaint was received by the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal's Office of Professional Standards related the MP response to Master Corporal Orton's death. It was subsequently determined that the complaint was one that could be more appropriately dealt with through a criminal investigation. This is one of several reasons, laid out in the National Defence Act (NDA) s.250.27(4), regarding why a conduct complaint may not require an NDA Part IV conduct investigation by the Office of Professional Standards to appropriately address the matter.
The criminal investigation concluded on March 18, 2025. No criminal or code of service discipline charges were laid. However, a Military Police Professional Code of Conduct (MPPCC) investigation was initiated on March 18, 2025, and remains ongoing. The MPPCC is how the CFPM exercises their authority to determine whether administrative action is taken against members of the MP, which could include revocation of MP credentials.
During and following the closure of the criminal investigation and the subsequent decision to call a Public Interest Hearing (PIH), the Office of the CFPM has corresponded with the MPCC regarding their request for disclosure of relevant information to support their existing review and in light of the decision to declare a PIH into the same matter.
The Office of the CFPM will continue to support the MPCC during the course of the PIH, while ensuring that the integrity of the ongoing MPPCC investigation into this matter is maintained.

"Boundary of Kolkata airport should be sealed immediately": Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 26 (ANI): The leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for the immediate sealing of the boundary at Kolkata airport. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said that the current situation at the airport poses a major security risk. 'What is happening at Kolkata Airport is a matter of great concern from a security perspective. Prayers are being performed on the ground. The boundary of Kolkata Airport is not being sealed,' he said. He expressed worry over the movement of outsiders in and around the airport premises. 'People from outside are coming and going, and there is also connectivity to China and Bangladesh from here. We have demanded that the boundary (of Kolkata Airport) be sealed,' Adhikari said. Adhikari also highlighted that two newly developed runways have still not been made operational despite being completed with central government funding. 'The two new runways for which the central government allocated a budget, and whose work has also been completed, have not been made operational. Only a single runway is functional,' he said. He attributed the delay in operating the new runway to an issue involving a religious structure. 'The reason given is the relocation of the Mosque to the secondary runway. This cannot go on,' Adhikari remarked. Calling for urgent action, he said, 'The boundary wall should be closed immediately. The boundary of such a sensitive international airport should be sealed immediately.' Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, 'NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this.' The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. (ANI)

AAEA Demands Accountability for Abandoned Oil/Gas Well Operations

Pressenza 24 Jun 2025, 05:53 GMT+10 Guwahati: Expressing concern over the Sivasagar crude-oil well gas leakage for days, a northeast India-based forum of graduate engineers urged both Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) to deal honestly with the abandoned wells. Both have the potential to harm human life, property and environment, where the concerned private parties often do not come to take responsibility. All Assam Engineer's Association (AAEA), in a statement, also appealed to the Union government in New Delhi to help the concerned company officials held accountable for any disaster that takes place on a deserted oil/gas well after declaring it dried up. Its apprehended that some corrupt ONGC and OIL officials continue declaring selected oil/gas wells as being old ones (meaning not feasible for drilling) so that private parties can be given the opportunity to drill and extract benefits with an understanding of sharing benefits with both the state-sponsored companies. Is anyone monitoring the responsible officials after they declare a loaded oil/gas well as a dry one and then secretly deal with private parties for extraction for personal gains? said AAEA president Er Kailash Sarma, working president Er Nava J Thakuria and secretary Er Inamul Hye. The Bhatiapar-Bari Chuk (Sivasagar) and 2020 Baghjan (Tinsukia) OIL well blow-out remind us of the same story where private parties were operating the well (after those were assumed not to be resourceful enough) and accidents took place. It means that no lessons have been learned on how to prevent such practices. Shockingly, India as a nation still does not have an efficient response team to deal with disasters with such magnitudes, so the expert teams from Canada or the USA need to come to address the problems at the crucial moment, added the AAEA statement.
