Madurai ranks third in state-level learning survey, but scores dip in higher classes
The district consistently scored above the state average, particularly in Class III, but showed a steady decline in performance in higher classes.
According to data accessed by TOI, among 11,064 Class III students surveyed across 1,228 schools in Madurai, scores were above 70% in Tamil, English, and EVS. However, Maths lagged at 62.78%, with just 13% of students meeting the learning outcome for comparing numbers based on place value.
"The sample included around 20 students per school and was evaluated independently by trained District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) college students," said an official from the education department. "Even though performance dipped in higher classes, the district remained above the state average."
In Class V, among 12,074 students from 1,230 schools, the average score in English dropped to 56.8%, with only 40% achieving the benchmark for reading comprehension.

Maths and EVS hovered around 63%. In Class VIII, scores further declined — 43.3% in English and 44.7% in Maths. Reading comprehension in English dropped to 25%, while performance in higher-order Maths was also weak. Science and Social Science scores stood at 43.08% and 60.92%, respectively.
Teachers cited poor attendance and an unfavourable student-teacher ratio as key factors behind the decline. "Most students come from Tamil-medium backgrounds, so difficulties in English are expected," said a Madurai school headmaster.
"Subjects like Maths require regular attendance, which remains inconsistent since attendance is not mandatory for passing."
Girls outperformed boys, and urban students scored better than their rural peers across all levels. The lack of adequate staffing was also flagged. "Many rural primary schools have just two teachers, often managing multiple classes. The sanctioned second teacher is appointed only when student strength crosses 70," said P Sreenivasan, district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Federation.
Alongside Madurai, other southern districts such as Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, and Sivagangai also ranked among the state's top five performers. Kanyakumari led the state with an overall score of 66.5%, with three of its blocks featuring among the best-performing in Tamil Nadu.

Window pane of Goa-Pune SpiceJet flight comes off midair
PUNE: Passengers on board a Goa-to-Pune SpiceJet flight (SG-1080) had a scare on Tuesday evening when a window panel was found dislodged while the plane was midair. The airline played down the incident, saying the window part that had come off was "a non-structural trim component, fitted onto the window for the purpose of shade". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But a person on board the plane - a Bombardier Q400 - told TOI the incident triggered anxiety among the passengers. "Two to three layers of the window panel just came off," said Aatish Mishra, the passenger. "There was no depressurisation, but this shouldn't have happened... We've just had a tragic plane crash," he added. The airline issued a statement saying: "A cosmetic window frame on one of SpiceJet's Q400 aircraft became loose during flight and was found dislodged. It is important to note that this was a non-structural trim component, fitted onto the window for the purpose of shade, and did not compromise the safety or integrity of the aircraft in any way. Cabin pressurisation remained normal throughout the flight, and there was no impact on passenger safety. " Mishra said he was in row 8 when he heard commotion from the back. The Q400 can seat around 80 passengers. A SpiceJet spokesperson said the frame was fixed after landing, "in accordance with standard maintenance procedures".

‘Tamil hymns to be recited for Tiruchendur temple consecration'
Madurai: Arrangements have been made for the recital of Tamil hymns and verses, along with Thirumurai, primarily alongside Sanskrit hymns and Vedas during the consecration ceremony of Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district on July 7, authorities informed the Madras high court. Following this, the court on Wednesday dismissed a batch of petitions, which sought a direction to conduct the consecration using Tamil spiritual mantras and hymns equally. In the counter, the joint commissioner/executive officer of the Tiruchendur temple submitted that starting from yagasalai to the final consecration, effective arrangements were made by the temple administration to recite and chant Tamil hymns and verses, Panniru Thirumuraigal primarily, along with Sanskrit hymns and Vedas during the consecration. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that, as per the counter affidavit, the procedures prevailing are being followed by the temple authorities. The petitioners are unable to establish any right for the grant of the relief as sought in the present petitions. In the absence of any right, the court cannot issue any such direction. The judges observed that it is needless to state that the procedures contemplated under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act and Rules are to be followed for administering the temple functions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo If there is no provision, then the govt should recognise certain practices, or the HR and CE commissioner should recognise certain practices, as the case may be, which are prevailing in a particular temple.
