Meghan McCain is ‘excited' to be working for Mark Halperin — a political pundit she once trashed
Besides taking issue with the sexual misconduct claims in the past, McCain has also criticized her new boss for Game Change, the best-selling book Halperin co-authored with John Heilemann that chronicled the 2008 election and prominently featured her late father and GOP presidential nominee John McCain.
'With age comes wisdom and different perspectives on people. I am now a 40 year old mother of two. I have grown and evolved like everyone else, particularly in the past five years — Mark has also grown and evolved,' McCain said in a statement to The Independent. 'Like Mark, at this point in my life I believe in giving people the presumption of grace and forgiveness as I would like it in return. I have had the fortune and misfortune of having every single thing I've ever done since I was 22 well documented on the internet and thrown back in my face by people like you.'
She added: 'I am also thrilled to be joining such an innovative platform like 2way with such open minded and respectful people in a time of extreme censorship and partisan politics.'
Having 'scraped his way back' to prominence following a #MeToo exile that saw him lose cushy gigs with NBC News and Showtime in 2017 following more than a dozen allegations of sexual harassment and assault, Halperin revealed this weekend that he was bringing McCain and journalist Michael Moynihan to 2way. The new hires, which will expand the platform's 'growing roster of ongoing bipartisan conversations,' come after 2Way recently raised $4 million of seed money and brought on former Free Press audio and video chief Alex Chitty to handle the company's strategy and operations.
'Throughout 2025, 2WAY will bring on other exciting content creators and organizational partners to expand our content verticals, our distribution channels, and the reach of 2WAY,' Halperin told Semafor.
McCain, who has made several appearances on 2way in recent months, declared her excitement on Sunday over the opportunity to work for Halperin going forward.
'I couldn't be more excited to be officially joining the team @2waytvapp & @MarkHalperin — my new show launches next week and will be live twice a week at 5pm for the 'happy hour'!' McCain tweeted. 'Live audience interaction in the spirit of @2waytvapp!'
It was just a few years ago, though, when the former host of The View didn't have such a rosy opinion of Halperin. For instance, after radio host Michael Smerconish — one of Halperin's media pals — announced that Halperin would be on his program in August 2019, McCain fired back with a snarky post.
'Did he put his genitalia on anyone's shoulder while he was there?' McCain wrote, referencing an allegation that Halperin pressed his penis against a woman's shoulder during the 2004 election cycle when he served as ABC News political director.
Several months later, McCain once again referenced the alleged incident while talking on The View about longtime MSNBC host Chris Matthews' sudden departure amid resurfaced claims of sexism and harassment. During the segment, McCain argued that sexual harassment at NBC News was 'way worse' than at Fox News, which has seen a number of prominent hosts and executives leave in shame amid sexual misconduct accusations and settlements.
'Mark Halperin put his, allegedly, erect penis on a woman's shoulder, and he was fired,' McCain exclaimed during the March 2020 broadcast. 'Yeah, look it up.'
After co-host Whoopi Goldberg read a legal disclaimer noting that Halperin has denied making unwanted physical contact with female colleagues, McCain added: 'I said allegedly… he was allegedly accused of that disgusting act.'
When the allegations first came out against Halperin in the fall of 2017, the veteran reporter issued a lengthy apology in which he said he was 'part of the problem' of men harming women in the workplace during his time at ABC News, adding that he acknowledged and 'deeply' regretted his actions. At the same time, though, he stated that 'some of the allegations that have been made against me are not true.'
'Toward the end of my time at ABC News, I recognized I had a problem,' Halperin continued. 'No one had sued me, no one had filed a human resources complaint against me, no colleague had confronted me. But I didn't need a call from HR to know that I was a selfish, immature person, who was behaving in a manner that had to stop.'
McCain hasn't just slammed Halperin for allegedly being a sex pest. When HBO made Game Change into a miniseries in 2011 starring Ed Harris as her father, she sounded off about the 'problem' she had with the production and Halperin's book.
In an op-ed for The Daily Beast, McCain stated that she was upset that Halperin, who she described as a 'man I had only heard of in name and was not an embed on the campaign,' had the temerity to reach out to her shortly after the 2008 election to ask 'what really happened' during the campaign. 'Reporters aren't generally known for their sensitivity and tact, but I can remember thinking, nice timing sir,' she wrote.
She also dismissed the book as being based on the recollections of 'disgruntled staffers' who rehashed 'stories they had not directly witnessed themselves' before taking another swipe at Halperin and Heilemann. 'I have no problem if the people actually there wanted to retell their stories,' McCain stated. 'I do, however, have a problem with reporters who were not present and have an obvious bias capitalizing on things that more than likely never happened.'

Home Office accounts have revealed £48m was wasted on a plan to house asylum seekers on a former Lincoln airbase. In March 2023, it was announced RAF Scampton was to house 2,000 migrants as part of proposals by the previous Conservative government to reduce the reliance on hotels. The scheme was met with widespread anger and disbelief in the local area. Plans were scrapped in September as part of an election pledge by the new Labour administration. Nobody was ever housed at the site – the former home of the Dambusters – despite millions being poured into the project. The level of losses have recently been published in the Home Office's accounts for the last year. It also showed costs could have ballooned as high as £180m if the project had been pursued for another three years. The government has previously admitted that a total of around £60m was spent on the site, of which £48.5m has been recorded as a loss. Lincoln MP Hamish Falconer told ITV News: "I'm honestly furious. I've been opposed to this plan since the very beginning. We always said this wasn't going to work for lots of obvious reasons. "I saw the site, just about a month ago, and I could not believe - with fury - all the NHS spending that has gone on in Scampton for a plan that was never going to work. That money should have gone on Lincoln County Hospital. "What we want to see is the site used for proper commercial purposes. It should be bringing in jobs. It should be reflecting the heritage of RAF Scampton. "Obviously, there is an issue in relation to asylum seekers that needs to be dealt with, but RAF Scampton should be for different purposes and that's what I've always said." Sarah Carter, from Save Our Scampton, said: "We're nearly a year down the line and we're still none the wiser what's going to happen here. "All that money wasted, and they're still wasting it. It's just haemorrhaging money, and we want an end to this so we can stop spending the money and so we know what's going to be happening." Backed by West Lindsey District Council, Scampton Holdings wants to develop the site. They're keen to push ahead with its regeneration plans to create a hub for heritage, aviation, defence and space. In a report shared with ITV News - the company said the project would bring in £5m every year to the local visitor economy, support more than 750 jobs, and generate an estimated £25m. Sally Grindrod-Smith is heavily involved in the West Lindsey District Council's plans for the regeneration with Scampton Holdings. She said: "I hear on a daily basis how frustrated the community are. You can see the site is deteriorating rapidly and there's real concerns over whether we'll be able to bring this back into use. "We've worked hard to make sure there are still investors interested, and our development partners are ready to go. "The council are committed, and we're ready to go once the home office get ready to sell the site." A Home Office spokesperson said: 'A review carried out in September 2024 determined that, due to decisions taken by the previous government, the costs associated with the Scampton site had surged well beyond initial estimates and no longer delivered value for money for taxpayers. 'The cost of exiting this site was minimal compared to the projected minimum £180 million required to keep it running until March 2027.'

Was JD Vance's birthday picture photoshopped? Questions raised over GOP's celebratory tweet
When JD Vance turned 41 at the weekend, the GOP posted a picture wishing the vice president a happy birthday. The photo, taken in January when he arrived to take the oath of office on Inauguration Day, seemed harmless enough. However, some eagle-eyed observers have now claimed the picture may have been digitally altered. The most obvious difference between the two images is that a line of stars on the U.S. flag are missing in the birthday picture, over Vance's left shoulder. It gives the impression his whole body has shifted to the left so the white stripe of the flag has moved to a new position. Vance's right arm also looks slightly misshapen in the birthday picture, though this may be a result of imposing the giant text added to it. More subtly, it appears that Vance is slimmer around the waist than he is in the original image, posters on X have claimed. Chris D. Jackson, Democrat party chair in Tennessee, said: 'The photoshop you guys did to his face and then to make his waist smaller is hilarious. LMFAO so embarrassing.' Billie Nelson, another X user, highlighted that Vance 'is not that snatched!' also suggesting he was not as slim in the original image. 'What in the Ozempic Photoshop is this?' she said, referring to the highly popular weight-loss jab currently slashing obesity rates in the U.S. The Independent contacted Vance's office and the RNC for comment on the apparent differences in the two pictures. This is not the first time images of JD Vance have become a talking point on social media. In October last year, Republican congressman Mike Collins of Georgia posted a picture of Vance with a much more chiseled appearance, prompting mockery online. X users then came up with their own, far less flattering, alterations of the future vice president's portrait. And in March, Vance became an internet meme after his face was used in a series of 'baby face' edits on X. His facial features appeared blown out, with puffed cheeks and wide eyes.

Ban on ‘barely legal' content to be proposed by UK pornography taskforce
A type of so-called 'barely legal' pornography would be banned online under legislation to be proposed this autumn by a new independent UK taskforce. The group of politicians and campaigners, led by Conservative peer Baroness Bertin, is looking at ways to make it illegal for sites to host any content that could encourage child sexual abuse. It comes amid concerns following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary about porn star Bonnie Blue, real name Tia Billinger, who has talked about having sex with 'barely legal 18-year-olds'. Scenes depicting adults dressed as children or a set made to look like a child's bedroom would be among the content the Independent Pornography Taskforce, set up last month, proposes be subject to a ban, it is understood. Baroness Bertin told the PA news agency: 'We would seek to bring parity with what is legal offline and what is legal online. 'Whatever is illegal offline should be illegal online – that is not a freedom of expression issue, that is just plain common sense.' The group is looking at ways in which the law could be changed, such as through amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill, as first reported by the Guardian. The Online Safety Act, enforced by Ofcom, requires online platforms to protect UK viewers from illegal material, such as child sexual abuse and extreme pornography. However, other types of content that are banned offline – for example, in cinemas or on DVDs – by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) do not face the same type of auditing online. It comes after the broadcast of Channel 4's 1,000 Men And Me: The Bonnie Blue Story about the performer who, after claiming to have had sex with 1,057 men in 12 hours, thanked 'all the barely legal, barely breathing and the husbands'. A Channel 4 spokesperson said: '1,000 Men And Me: The Bonnie Blue Story is an observational documentary that follows Tia Billinger (Bonnie Blue) as she gains worldwide attention and earns millions of pounds from her content. The film looks at Tia's divisive style of her social media and hears from colleagues and collaborators in order to understand her polarising business model. The director Victoria Silver puts many challenges to Tia throughout the documentary, and the film clearly lays bare the tactics and strategies Tia uses, with the audience left to form their own opinions.' They added: 'Careful consideration has been given to the content and the way in which it is included, and the final programme is compliant with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. The explicit content in the documentary is editorially justified and provides essential context; making pornographic content is Bonnie's job, and this film is about her work and the response to it. Crucially, the content is presented in a non-gratuitous and in part partially blurred manner, and viewers are alerted to the sexual content with appropriate warnings to ensure they understood from the outset the nature of the programme.'
