Father among 9 people arrested in Pakistan over suspected honour killing
Police said Sidra Bibi, 18, was killed on the orders of a local council of elders in the garrison city of Rawalpindi after she married a man of her choice.
Some of her relatives are alleged to have buried her body and flattened the land to erase evidence of a grave, police official Aftab Hussain said Monday. The victim was suffocated using a pillow placed over her face, he added.
The arrests came after authorities exhumed the body and carried out an autopsy, which confirmed she had been tortured before being killed.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation in a country where honour killings are still common.
The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said 405 women were killed in 2024 in such cases, compared with 226 in 2023.
'The actual number is believed to be higher due to underreporting," said Sadia Bukhari, a member of the commission's council.
Honour killings, in which family members kill women for actions perceived as bringing shame to the family — such as choosing their spouse — have increased in recent years.
Earlier this month, police in southwestern Balochistan province arrested 11 suspects after a video shared online appeared to show a young couple being fatally shot for marrying without their families' approval.
Police confirmed the authenticity of the footage, saying the killings happened in the Deghari district in the province of Balochistan.
In January, police arrested a Pakistani man suspected of killing his US-born 15-year-old daughter for refusing to stop posting videos on TikTok, a platform with more than 54 million users in the country.

UP ATS arrests homoeopath from Badlapur for anti-national activities
MUMBAI: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged anti-national conspiracy aimed at disturbing communal harmony and establishing Sharia law in India. Among those arrested is a homoeopathy doctor, who was picked up on Sunday from his workplace in Badlapur, Thane district. 'The arrest was carried out entirely by the UP ATS based on their investigation. Our involvement was limited to providing logistical support,' said a senior Thane police officer. 'We ensured due process was followed during the arrest and court procedures.' Dr Sheikh was produced before the Ulhasnagar magistrate court, which granted a transit remand until August 8. We informed his family members about his arrest before he was taken to UP, said a police officer. The doctor's arrest comes after the UP ATS recently arrested Ajmal Ali, a resident of UP. Ali was one of the 400 members, many of them allegedly Pakistani nationals, in a WhatsApp group named 'Reviving Islam'. According to the ATS officials, Ali was allegedly promoting extremist ideology to incite hatred against non-Muslims on various social media platforms. When Ali was called for questioning at the ATS headquarters, he confessed to being in touch with several Pakistani nationals via social media. Officials said he also revealed he considered Dr Sheikh in Thane to be his mentor and that they communicated frequently via Instagram and Signal. They added that the two allegedly had 'extremist discussions about toppling India's elected government and replacing it with a Sharia-based system.' Following this, Lucknow's ATS police station registered a case on August 1 under Sections 148 (conspiracy to commit offences) and 152 (acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Ajmal was taken into custody and sent to judicial remand. An ATS officer said, 'Both of them reportedly promoted violent jihad, with the ultimate aim of carrying out Ghazwa-e-Hind and enforcing Sharia law in the country.' The ATS, in a statement, stated that the duo were also attempting to radicalise Muslim youth by inciting anger and allegedly encouraging them to engage in anti-national activities.

The arrest came on Saturday night after Thana Bhawan police received information about his real identity. Police raided the temple and took him into custody for questioning. Man Poses As Event Director, Dupes Bhopal Doctor Of Rs 10 Lakh In Fake Bigg Boss Entry Scam

According to India Today, the doctor, Abhinit Gupta, is a popular dermatologist in the city and runs the Poison Skin Clinic there. The case dates back to 2022, when the doctor received a call from a man who identified himself as Karan Singh and claimed he had strong connections in television production circles. Karan assured Dr Gupta that he could secure his entry into Bigg Boss through unofficial channels. The report claimed the doctor allegedly paid Karan Rs 10 lakh. However, suspicion arose when his name did not feature on the final list of contestants for that season. Upon confronting Karan, Dr Gupta was told that the entry would happen through a 'backdoor process." When this too did not materialise over time, the doctor began demanding a refund. The doctor approached the police and registered a complaint, as Karan avoided the doctor's calls and eventually switched off his phone. A First Information Report (FIR) against the doctor was registered under Section 420 of the IPC. In another case, a 34-year-old man, who allegedly cheated people on the pretext of arranging a Mudra loan after collecting money from them and had been absconding since 2021, was apprehended. The accused, who was involved in multiple fraud cases in Hyderabad, by falsely promising assistance in securing Mudra loan, collected money and documents from victims and absconded, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Commissioner's Task Force) YVS Sudheendra said in a release. The accused became acquainted with the Mudra loan process after watching videos on a social media platform related to government financial schemes, police said.
