Lumpy Skin Disease reported in 10 states, over 28 cr animals vaccinated: Centre
LSD is a transboundary animal disease that has gained significant attention in India due to its severe impact on cattle health and the dairy industry. The disease is characterised by the development of skin nodules across the body, fever, swollen lymph nodes, decreased milk yield, and difficulty in movement.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, said that till July 24, 'LSD has been reported in 10 states namely Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Maharashtra and Karnataka'.
'Presently active cases are reported only in Maharashtra,' he added. Gujarat is also seeing a resurgence in LSD cases, infecting 300 cattle across eight districts in the state.
'More than 28 crore animals have also been vaccinated against LSD since 2022,' Baghel said.
The Minister noted that vaccination among cattle was highest in Uttar Pradesh (4.6 crore), followed by Maharashtra (4.13 crore) and Madhya Pradesh (3 crore).
LSD virus transmission is primarily attributed to vector bites, with mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects playing a crucial role.
In the last two years, about 200,000 cattle have died across the nation, while millions more have lost their milk production capabilities due to LSD.
Notably, financial assistance is provided to states according to their demand for procuring vaccine doses for vaccination against LSD and related disease control activities under the Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP).
'The funds of Rs. 196.61 crore have been released to states/UTs during the year 2024-25,' Baghel said.

Lumpy skin disease affects 1,327 cows in Nashik division
Nashik: As many as 1,327 cows have been diagnosed with the viral lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Nashik division within a fortnight. With 625 cases, Ahilyanagar district recorded the highest number of cases, Jalgaon following closely at 624. The latter has been the only one to have recorded a death so far. In Nashik district 25 cases were reported till Thursday evening. In what Baburao Narawade, animal husbandry regional joint commissioner, termed as 'occurrences', he said: "The clusters are apart and it has not assumed the proportions to be called as outbreak so far." LSD is a contagious viral infection characterized by fever, nodules on skin and reduced milk production in cattle. Another senior official said of the total number of infected cows, the recovery rate is about 50%. 645 infected cattle have already recovered, 681 are currently undergoing treatment and one has died, totaling 1,327. The animal husbandry department is taking measures across the division to contain further spread of the disease. Ahilyanagar has the highest population of cattle at 13.6lakh. Nashik follows with 8.9lakh, Jalgaon with 5.7lakh, Dhule and Nandurbar with 3.5lakh and 3.1lakh cattle each, amounting to 34.85lakh cattle. "In Nashik district, 15 out of 25 are active cases, and the condition of three cows is serious," the officer added. Due to the absence of a specific vaccine to treat this disease, goat pox vaccine is used for developing immunity among cattle. In Ahilyanagar, over 95% of cattle are vaccinated. In Dhule, the coverage is 93%. Narawade said although this vaccine is available across the region, the majority of infected cattle is calves who could not be vaccinated either because they were too young or born after the last vaccination drive.

Pharma firms get one-month extension to submit declarations under UCPMP
The Centre has extended the deadline for pharma company heads to submit their legal self-declarations under the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP). The declaration assures the government that companies will not engage in unethical marketing practices to promote their drugs. In a circular dated July 31, the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) granted pharma associations a one-month extension until August 31 to file the self-declaration undertaking. This undertaking must be signed by the executive head of the company, assuring compliance with the marketing practices code. The signatory could be the Managing Director or the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company. Previously, these declarations were required to be submitted within two months after the end of every financial year, i.e., by June 30. The deadline was first extended to July 31 after some firms requested more time, citing difficulties in meeting the deadline. The deadline has now been further extended to August 31. The extension comes as a relief for these companies, as failure to meet the requirements would have led to government action. The circular, reviewed by Business Standard, also instructed pharma companies to disclose their marketing expenditure according to UCPMP rules. The UCPMP, launched in March 2024, aims to bring transparency and ensure ethical conduct by pharmaceutical companies in their marketing practices. The code prohibits firms from offering gifts, travel, hospitality, or monetary benefits to doctors in exchange for prescribing specific medicines. While the code also bars pharma firms from providing free drug samples to individuals who are not qualified to prescribe them, it also regulates events, seminars, and workshops involving the pharmaceutical industry and doctors.
