MARA Education Foundation provides RM1,000 aid
MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid aimed to ease the burden on the victims' families, most of whom came from modest or underprivileged backgrounds.
'Today, I had the opportunity to represent Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in visiting the victims of the bus crash involving UPSI students at the JRTB and in handing over the assistance.
'So we hope this immediate RM1,000 contribution can help reduce the burden of the families who came today to visit the victims of this truly heartbreaking tragedy,' he said in a Facebook post today.
In the incident that occurred at about 1.10 am on the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Gerik, 15 UPSI students were killed in a crash involving a tour bus and a Perodua Alza.
The bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was en route from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Over RM90,000 worth of counterfeit watches, smartphones seized in Sibu raids
SIBU: Counterfeit watches and smartphones valued at more than RM90,000 have been seized in two separate raids on business premises around Sibu. The raids, at about 11am on Thursday (July 24), were carried out by 12 enforcement officers from Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's Sibu branch with the cooperation of representatives from trademark-owning companies. Sibu Domestic Trade chief Kelyn Bolhassan said the enforcement operation resulted in the seizure of counterfeit watches worth RM48,312 and smartphones and accessories of various brands estimated at RM41,856. "This operation was carried out under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trademarks Act 2019, which prohibits the possession or control of goods bearing falsely applied trademarks for the purpose of trade," he said in a statement on Friday (July 25) He added that the ministry is committed to cracking down on counterfeit products in the market to ensure consumer rights are safeguarded. "Traders are reminded to always comply with the law. We will continue to work closely with trademark owners and other agencies to protect both consumers and intellectual property rights," Kelyn said. Under the Trademarks Act 2019, individuals found guilty may be fined up to RM10,000 for each counterfeit item, imprisoned for up to three years, or both. Companies may be fined up to RM15,000 for each wrongly trademarked item. KPDN urged the public to report any suspected business misconduct through the Ez ADU mobile app, via the website, or by contacting the Sibu branch directly through phone, email, WhatsApp, or by visiting the office in person.

218 M'sians arrested in Taiwan for acting as fraud syndicate mules
KUALA LUMPUR: There have been 218 Malaysians detained for suspected involvement in fraud syndicates as "money mules" in Taiwan, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic). He said that according to the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre (MFTC) in Taipei, as of July 9, a total of 165 are awaiting trial, while 53 others have been jailed for between six months and a year. 'This group typically receives enticing job offers or 'work and travel' packages in Taiwan through social media, including promised salaries of up to RM10,000 per month. 'However, upon arrival in Taiwan, their passports and mobile phones are confiscated,' he said in a parliamentary written reply to Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan). Sh Mohmed Puzi asked the ministry to provide updates on reports of Malaysians detained in Taiwan for links to financial scam syndicates. Mohamad said the mules were tasked with collecting money from fraud victims at specific locations, or withdrawing money from ATMs using cards provided by the syndicate. "They would then hand over the money to the syndicate. 'This activity constitutes a fraud offence under Taiwanese laws, which can result in imprisonment and fines,' he added. He also said his ministry has launched an awareness campaign in collaboration with the Communications Ministry and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. 'Through MFTC, the ministry also holds discussions with Taiwanese authorities to address this issue. 'This initiative covers not only financial fraud but also acting as drug mules, gold smuggling and job scams. "It aims to proactively reduce the involvement of Malaysian citizens in criminal activities abroad,' he said, reminding Malaysians to remain vigilant when overseas.

Cops nab three more suspects in Puchong abduction
SUBANG: Three more suspects have been detained in connection with the abduction of a man in Bukit Puchong. Subang OCPD Asst Comm Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the suspects, aged 18 to 19, were detained in Hulu Selangor and Puchong on Thursday (July 24). "The suspects will be remanded," he said when contacted on Friday (July 25). It was previously reported that a suspected gang member was arrested in SS19, Subang Jaya, on Tuesday (July 22) just hours after he abducted a man in Puchong. ACP Wan Azlan had said the victim, who was with the 32-year-old suspect, was rescued during the police operation. ACP Wan Azlan said the suspect, who has a criminal record and a tattoo of an outlawed secret society, had been remanded for four days. 'Preliminary investigation showed that the motive of the abduction is related to debts,' he told reporters. The case is being investigated for abduction and causing hurt. The victim, who was bundled onto the lorry, attempts to break free but is seen being assaulted repeatedly in the brief clip. ACP Wan Azlan urged anyone with information to contact Insp Dinesh Ganasan at 011-3309 4457 or the Subang Jaya police at 03-7862 7100. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 upon conviction.
