Bride shot dead on wedding night in France

Yahoo23-06-2025
A bride has been shot dead by a masked assailant at her wedding in a village in south-east France.
One of the attackers also died and three other people, including a 13-year-old child, were injured in the attack, which happened in the village of Goult, Luberon.
The identity of the suspects is unknown, but police believe the incident may be drug-related.
At about 4.30am on Sunday, the bride, 27, and the 25-year-old groom were leaving the wedding party when they were confronted by four masked assailants who opened fire.
Initial reports suggested one of the attackers had been run over by the couple's car as the groom tried to escape, but Florence Galtier, the Avignon prosecutor, referred to the suspect as having been shot 'in the exchange'.
About 28 people were present at the gathering during the attack, police said. One woman, thought to be the groom's sister, was lightly injured. According to the prosecutor, the attackers arrived by car and carried several weapons, but fled on foot.
The groom, said to be from Cavaillon, is well known to the police, with 26 entries in the criminal records database, according to a police source cited by Le Figaro. The bride, from Apt, Provence, was not known to the authorities.
An investigation into a murder by an organised gang has been opened by police, and several police cars blocked access to the scene on Sunday morning.
Didier Perello, the Goult mayor, said: 'I'm angry. I'm outraged.' Mr Perello did not rule out possible score-settling, saying: 'I'm ruling nothing out. Absolutely nothing.
'We're close to towns, I won't name them, where unfortunately, we've already seen this kind of thing before.'
According to the mayor, the village hall had been booked by the couple in March. 'The hall had been rented for a wedding by people who don't live in the commune,' he added.
Restaurant owner Guillaume Molinas, 50, told AFP he feared that the tragedy would 'give the village a bad name', adding: 'The last major incident in the village was 125 years ago.'
The French government has recently vowed to ramp up the fight against drug-related crime.
Another shooting took place at about 6am on Sunday in the city of Avignon, in the same Vaucluse region. A man was shot dead in the Cap Sud shopping centre area, while a second person was injured and is in a serious condition.
Police sources said the incident also appeared to be drug-related.

French Bishop to lead Vatican's minors-protection commission

Pope Leo XIV holds a drawing during an audience with children and young people during the 'Estate Ragazzi in Vaticano' summer camp in Vatican City on Thursday. Photo by Vatican Media/EPA July 5 (UPI) -- French Archbishop Thibault Verny is the Vatican's new president of its Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors after opposing child abuse within the Episcopal Conference. Pope Leo XIV appointed Verny to succeed American Capuchin Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley, with whom Verny worked to promote a "culture of protection for vulnerable people," Vatican News reported on Saturday. Verny is the Archbishop of Chambery and the Bishop of Maurienne and Tarentaise in France. As president of the commission to protect minors, Verny said he will continue working to protect minors against sexual abuse and raise awareness within the church. "In France, my mission ... allowed me to listen to the victims and accompany them on their journey," Verny said. "It was a decisive experience." He also worked with law enforcement and other civil authorities to develop protocols for thwarting abuse within the church. "It is a matter of raising awareness among the various sepiscopates, religious orders and congregations in different countries about listening to and accompanying victims in a specific way," Verny said. "We must continue to implement a mindset [and] a culture within the churches to spread the protection of minors and ensure that it becomes natural, both in the church and in family and also in society." His appointment comes as the Catholic Church works to address past wrongs and prevent future occurrences. Pope Francis in September visited Timor-Leste, during which he called for protecting youth amid a clergy abuse scandal in the island nation. He made the visit following the Vatican in 2022 disciplining Bishop Ximenes Belo, who had been accused of sexually abusing young boys during the 1980s and 1990s. The accusation was one of many that have plagued the Catholic Church for many years. In France, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse published a 2,500-page report in 2021 after a three-year investigation.

More than 20 arrests at protest in support of Palestine Action after UK ban comes into effect

LONDON (AP) — More than 20 people were arrested Saturday on suspicion of terrorism offenses after protesters gathered in central London in support of Palestine Action. The protest in Parliament Square came hours after the pro-Palestinian activist group was banned in Britain under anti-terrorism laws. The group lost a last-minute court battle late Friday seeking to block the British government's ban, which came into effect at midnight. Activists and their supporters have said the group is non-violent and advocates civil disobedience, and condemned the government decision as authoritarian. A small group of protesters stood beneath a statue of Mahatma Gandhi and held placards reading, 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' Police surrounded them and several people were taken away. One woman seen lying on the ground in handcuffs was carried by officers to a police van. 'Palestine Action is a proscribed group and officers will act where criminal offences are committed,' the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. The designation as a proscribed group under the Terrorism Act 2000 means that membership of the group and support of its actions a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Some 81 organizations are already proscribed under the UK act, including Hamas and al-Qaida. The government moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base in Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England, on June 20, damaging two planes using red paint and crowbars in protest at the British government's ongoing military support for Israel in its war in Gaza. Police said that the incident caused around 7 million pounds' ($9.4 million) worth of damage. Four people between 22 and 35 years old were charged Thursday with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the interests of the U.K. No pleas were entered at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London and the four are scheduled to appear on July 18 at the Central Criminal Court.
