A new, faster-paced game mode is coming to Apex Legends on August 5
Another big difference here is legend stacking. You and your teammates will all be able to play as the same character, if you like. Respawn has retooled the Kings Canyon map for Wildcard, adding ziplines, gravity cannons and other fun stuff to the playground. Second chances will give you another opportunity to pick up the win if things don't pan out for you at first.
It's highly likely that Wildcard has been in the works for quite a while, but it's a bit unfortunate for Respawn that it's debuting the mode several weeks after Epic Games added a new, faster-paced battle royale option of its own to Fortnite . Rounds of Blitz Royale — which Epic designed primarily for mobile devices — can last just a few minutes each. Still, it's probably been a couple of years since I last played Apex , and Wildcard has me intrigued enough to dive back in.
There are plenty of other updates coming to Apex when the Showdown season starts, of course. Caustic will have a new ability called Field Research, while his gas canisters and grenades will deal more damage. Meanwhile, Bangalore's smoke canister will be able to breach doors and gain an EMP upgrade. In addition, Respawn is retooling the mid-to-late game with powerful passive abilities called Amps. These will allow you to unlock boosts like infinite ammo, extra armor and healing upgrades.

There is much talk about the 'Fortnite-ification' of various video games these days, where that no longer just means everyone making a battle royale, but in terms of how microtranscations for a game are conceived of and executed. Fortnite's endless string of superheroes and video game guest stars and even celebrities feels pretty standard at this point. Call of Duty has been doing something similar for years, but is now getting into fairly ridiculous territory with releases like Nicki Minaj, Seth Rogen, Beavis and Butthead and American Dad skins that frankly feel absurd in the formerly grounded world here. Now that Battlefield 6 is on the horizon this fall, DICE has commented about how they're not planning to go down this same path: 'It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was — it was all soldiers, on the ground,' design director Shashank Uchil told dbltap. 'I don't think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let's keep it real, keep it grounded.' If you've seen any of the footage or previews of Battlefield 6, you might imagine how absolutely absurd it might be to see Homer Simpson or Batman running around these explosive modern military arenas. I mean, you can say the same about Call of Duty, and players are saying that, but the dam has sort of burst over there. Here? DICE seems to want to nip that idea in the bud. If goofy crossover skins weren't moving cash through Call of Duty, they likely wouldn't keep making them. Even if the consensus is that these skins are ridiculous, there is likely a contingent of quieter players who are in fact actually buying them in bulk. This is also EA we're talking about, so I do wonder that if Battlefield 6 isn't selling enough Battlefield Coins or whatever, they might be pushed closer and closer to more extreme skins. Though we do have some examples of games avoiding this like Helldivers 2, which has consistently (more or less) maintained its visual identity with its cosmetics added over time. Hopefully Battlefield 6 can do the same. As for Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7 going head-to-head this fall, there is some sense that BF6 may have a real shot at dethroning the king at this point. It almost instantly got 500,000 wishlists on Steam, has an immense amount of social chatter, millions of trailer views, the list goes on and on. But Call of Duty is Call of Duty. It doesn't lose to any game not named Hogwarts Legacy or Grand Theft Auto. It would, however, benefit from more steep competition, which is what Battlefield 6 may give it this year. ‘Fortnite' Reveals Chapter 6, Season 4 Name, Concept And ‘Halo' Connection
Fortnite has done yet another video game crossover, a move that is hardly news in this day and age, but in this case, it's a bit interesting. The game has announced it's adding Spartans, specifically female Spartans from Halo, five years after adding Master Chief himself to the game back in 2020. I find it at least mildly amusing that to fully get players to understand that these were female Spartans they had to show them off from a…certain angle, which certainly makes that clear. We see two different colors, indicating customization, though I'm not sure if that applies to specific armor pieces as well. There is not a corresponding set of generic male Spartan skins in the game, just Chief. This also came with the name of season 4, "Shock 'N Awesome," and the description: "Investigate the start of the bug invasion, and ready up for the fight against the insect adversaries on August 7!" With these Spartans comings, in terms of properties Microsoft owns that have shown up in Fortnite we have: In another life I would imagine that we might have seen a Joanna Dark skin if that game wasn't just summarily executed recently. We didn't get anything out of Bethesda's big Starfield release, either. While Halo Infinite multiplayer has dramatically improved in time, it's not exactly top of mind in the PvP space and we have not seen anything at all from Master Chief after the initial Infinite campaign in 2020. Only lately have we started to hear rumblings from Microsoft that they may start talking about the future of Halo soon, but we have updates on quite literally almost all their other big franchises at this point other than what was supposed to be their biggest. But that's not true any longer. Other bits of rumors attached the release of these female Spartan skins are that they will have a red/blue energy sword pickaxe. Halo is a big part of the season 4 battle pass, and will be involved in the upcoming 'invasion' storyline that may involve giant bugs. These female Spartan skins may be rank 1 on the pass. The clock is ticking: Google has 14 days to make major changes to the Play Store
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google has 14 days to enact the Play Store changes needed to resolve its antitrust issues. The tech giant has now filed an emergency stay with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The company believes that making these changes in such a short amount of time will put users and developers at risk. On Thursday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling from the original Epic v. Google lawsuit, giving Epic Games the big win it was looking for. As a result, Google must enact a list of remedies to resolve its antitrust issues. The tech giant is now hoping the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will grant it an emergency stay. According to The Verge, Google has revealed that it has only 14 days to enact the significant changes it was ordered to make to the Play Store. The quick turnaround has led the tech giant to file an emergency stay with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to put a pause on the situation. The list of remedies that will need to be enacted in 14 days includes: Allowing app developers to use non-Google payment methods Allowing developers to tell users about other ways to pay from within the Play Store Letting developers share links with users that allow their apps to be downloaded outside of the Play Store Letting developers set their own prices No more paying phone makers, carriers, and developers for Play Store exclusivity or preinstallation Working with Epic to resolve any disputes as Google builds a system to let rival app stores in Eventually, Google will also have to allow rival app stores on the Play Store or give these rivals access to its full app catalog. However, Google won't be forced to do that quite yet. As the outlet points out, Google still has seven and a half months before it will be required to let other apps onto the Play Store. So, although Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said the Epic Games Store is coming to the Play Store, that won't happen until at least next year. In the stay request, Google argues that this qualifies as an emergency because making these changes will significantly impact millions of users, hundreds of thousands of developers, and its own company. It also claims that enacting such changes in a short span of time will expose users and developers to substantial risks, as well as jeopardize the Android ecosystem. Whether the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals grants Google's request for a stay remains to be seen. But considering Google was denied an earlier request for a stay, it seems unlikely. It's expected that Google could try to appeal to the Supreme Court. Follow
