The Texas Rangers have traded pitcher Dane Dunning to the Atlanta Braves in a salary-shedding move, receiving minor league reliever Jose Ruiz and cash in return, according to mlbtraderumors.com. To make space, Atlanta designated veteran Jesse Chavez for assignment.
Dunning, once a key part of Texas' rotation, has struggled to regain form. After a solid 2022 season with a 3.70 ERA over 172 2/3 innings, he regressed in 2023, posting a 5.31 ERA. Despite accepting a rare arbitration pay cut, he failed to make the Opening Day roster and has mostly spent 2024 in Triple-A. He was recalled in April, cleared waivers in May, and made just five big-league appearances this season.
With the Rangers aiming to stay below the $241 million luxury tax threshold, Dunning - owed about $1 million - became an expendable piece. His role had diminished significantly, falling behind pitchers like Patrick Corbin, Jack Leiter, and Kumar Rocker. Texas also anticipates Jon Gray's return from injury, making Dunning's path to innings even narrower. For Atlanta, the move addresses a rotation hit hard by injuries. With Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, and Reynaldo López sidelined, and young arms like Didier Fuentes struggling, Dunning offers potential as a back-end starter or long reliever. He still has a minor league option and could be non-tendered this offseason.Ruiz, 30, joins Texas after a shaky 2024 that saw him allow 17 runs in 16 1/3 innings across stints with Philadelphia and Atlanta. He was effective last season (3.71 ERA, 24% strikeout rate) but has since struggled. He'll report to Triple-A Round Rock.
The trade slightly trims Texas' payroll, offering some flexibility as the club eyes deadline upgrades - especially power bats and bullpen arms - while keeping under the luxury tax line. Jesse Chavez, meanwhile, may rejoin the Braves on a minor league deal if he clears waivers again.

Dream riding high off big wins as they return home to meet Valkyries

Fresh off two of the season's most impressive wins, the Atlanta Dream return home for the first time in more than three weeks to face the slumping Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday in College Park, Ga. Atlanta (15-10) went 3-3 during its recent six-game road trip, which was cut in half by the All-Star break. After dropping three of four to begin the stretch, the Dream topped the Phoenix Mercury 90-79 before picking up a 90-86 victory over the league-leading Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. As the team returns home for the first time since beating Golden State on July 7, the Dream hope the extended time on the road will serve them well going forward. "I do think it's important as you get into a playoff situation that you already have some experience winning big games on the road against the best teams," Atlanta head coach Karl Smesko said. "There hasn't been a better team than Minnesota this year, so to be in this environment and play as well as we did, I think it's something that we'll remember." Allisha Gray's 18.7 points per game lead Atlanta, while Rhyne Howard -- the team's No. 2 scorer (16.5 ppg) -- remains out with a left knee injury suffered on July 11. Howard is expected to miss at least Atlanta's next two games. Golden State (11-13) will look to rebound from its worst loss in the franchise's young history. As the league's lone expansion team, the Valkyries are still a work in progress, as their 31-point loss at Connecticut on Sunday proved. Golden State has dropped six of eight in July, including its 95-64 defeat against the Sun, in which the Valkyries turned the ball over 24 times. "(Connecticut) just played harder than us," Golden State head coach Natalie Nakase said. "Things were just not clicking. We weren't connected because our energy level, our organization, our minds, just weren't connected with our body." A bad stretch was made worse this week, as leading scorer and rebounder Kayla Thornton (14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds per game) underwent season-ending knee surgery after injuring herself in practice. Tiffany Hayes, who adds 12.5 points per contest, will try to shoulder the load and bounce back from an 0-for-8 shooting output on Sunday.

Depleted Braves acquire pitcher Carlos Carrasco from Yankees for cash considerations

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees traded veteran pitcher Carlos Carrasco to the depleted Atlanta Braves on Monday for cash considerations. HT Image The Braves acquired Carrasco a day after losing Grant Holmes to right elbow inflammation on Sunday. Holmes was originally placed on the 15-day injured list but moved to the 60-day IL after Erick Fedde was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals. With the news involving Holmes, all five of Atlanta's opening day rotation are on the 60-day injured list. Atlanta lost at Texas 8-1 Sunday, has dropped five in a row and is 12 games behind in the NL wild-card race. Carrasco was 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight games for the Yankees, who started him six times before designating him for assignment on May 6. Carrasco was in spring training on a minor league deal and could have opted out but he was re-signed after posting a 1.69 ERA in five spring training outings, including four starts. After accepting his assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, the 38-year-old right-hander was 4-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) and was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA in five July starts. Originally acquired by the Cleveland Guardians from the Phillies for Cliff Lee in July 2009, Carrasco is 112-105 with a 4.18 ERA in 332 games (283) starts for Cleveland, the New York Mets and Yankees. He led the American League in wins in 2017 when he was 18-6 with Cleveland and also was named the 2019 AL Comeback Player of the Year following a return from leukemia. The Yankees made their third trade since Friday after acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Rockies and Amed Rosario from the Nationals. ___ AP MLB:

Elon Musk's Tesla taps Samsung in $16.5B AI chip deal—A game-changer that could rewrite the future of driving; details here

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has signed a $16.5 billion contract with Samsung Electronics to manufacture its next-generation AI6 chips, Elon Musk confirmed on July 28, 2025. The chips will be produced in Samsung's new Texas-based facility. The agreement spans nine years, from July 24, 2025, to December 31, 2034, and marks a significant milestone in Tesla's push to scale its Full Self-Driving capabilities and other AI-based products. AI6 chips to power Tesla's autonomous tech and robotics The AI6 chips will be developed to support Tesla's upcoming hardware platforms, including its next-gen Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, the Optimus humanoid robot, and AI infrastructure like the Dojo supercomputer. Currently, Tesla uses the AI4 chip in its Hardware 4 vehicles. An intermediate AI5 chip, produced by Taiwan-based TSMC, is expected to bridge the gap before AI6 is fully rolled out. Elon Musk also noted that TSMC will begin producing AI5 chips in the United States at its Arizona facility, shifting some of the production away from Taiwan. Samsung's Texas fab to focus solely on Tesla chips According to Musk's posts on X, Samsung's Texas fab will be dedicated exclusively to manufacturing Tesla's AI6 chips. 'The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate,' Musk said, adding that Samsung agreed to Tesla playing an active role in maximizing manufacturing efficiency. Musk mentioned he would be directly involved, even 'walking the line personally' at the fab to accelerate progress. He also pointed out that the facility's proximity to his home makes close involvement more feasible. Samsung's foundry business gets a major boost Samsung had earlier announced a major contract for chip manufacturing with a global client without naming Tesla, citing business confidentiality. The deal, worth $16.5 billion, accounts for 7.6% of the company's 2024 revenue. The partnership comes at a crucial time for the South Korean company, which has been under pressure in the competitive AI chip space. Despite being the global leader in memory chips, Samsung's foundry division has struggled to retain major clients, many of whom prefer TSMC for advanced chip production. TSMC's client list includes key industry players like Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. Musk expects output to exceed deal value Musk emphasized that the $16.5 billion figure is only a baseline. 'The $16.5B number is just the bare minimum. Actual output is likely to be several times higher,' he posted. This suggests Tesla expects demand for AI6-powered systems to grow significantly, which would require ramping up chip production well beyond the initial contract estimate. This partnership highlights Tesla's long-term strategy to localize chip manufacturing within the United States and reduce reliance on overseas production. It also strengthens Samsung's position in the U.S. semiconductor market, especially as it looks to compete with TSMC and SK Hynix in advanced chip technologies.
