As celebrations carried into the post-match briefing, one journalist reminded Gill of a pointed question posed before the match - about India's winless record at Edgbaston. With a mischievous grin, Gill paused, scanned the room dramatically, and fired back: "I can't see… My favourite journalist. Where is he?"

Gill then turned reflective, saying, "I actually wanted to see him, but I even said before the Test match that I don't really believe in stats or histories."
He continued, "Over the last 50-60 years, we've played just seven matches here - different teams, different eras. I believe this is the best Indian team to come to England. We've got the capability to beat them, to win the series from here. And we've got the right momentum with us."

Shubman Gill scored 430 runs in the Birmingham Test Speaking to Revsportz, Ganguly said it was the best batting performance he has ever seen on English soil in the last three decades as Gill notched up scores of 269 and 161 to become the first captain in Test history to score more than 400 runs in a single match. "Shubman is batting like a dream," said Ganguly. "See my tweet and you will know. In my three decades of playing and watching cricket in the UK, this is one of the best exhibitions of batting that I have seen. He is simply flawless. There are no chinks in his armour and the English bowlers don't look like getting him out. See the way he is batting and you will know what I am saying. Gill isn't making a single mistake. He was always pleasing to the eye. And now he is showing the hunger and the temperament. If you see him now, you will be left wondering how can he have an average of less than 50 in Test cricket." Ganguly dethroned Virat Kohli's 2018 epic with his words, a tour which was considered by many as one of the greatest performances by an Indian batter in England. The 36-year-old had buried the ghosts of 2014 past to notch up 593 runs, comprising two centuries and three fifties. Gill has already scored 585 runs in just two matches in the series and stands just 18 runs short of becoming the most prolific Indian batter on an England tour in a single series, with Rahul Dravid still leading the chart, having amassed 602 runs in the 2002 series. The former India opener said that the most significant aspect of Gill's knocks were that he did not stop at the century mark and kept at it, leading by example. "The best thing about Shubman in this series is the determination to go big," said Ganguly. "If you see, in every innings, he has gone big. A hundred isn't really enough. He wants to get the double-hundred and that's something fantastic to see." With the series now heading to the Lord's, where the match will begin on Thursday, July 10, and India would be aiming for a 2-1 lead, Ganguly had one final word for Gill. "This series could see the making of Shubman Gill as skipper," he added. The hosts have never won a Test at the venue before but managed to do so on Sunday, and they have done so emphatically. 'It is more historic because very few teams would have won against England in England with such a huge margin in their home conditions. Whether it's Australia or South Africa, any team would have gone to some other country and won with such a big margin rarely,' former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja said, speaking on Sony Sports. 'The biggest change that has been seen, it's not that you have won for the first or the last time, but anger used to be seen in the team earlier. We saw so many people talking, and when wickets fell at the ground, a sort of smile was seen, a sort of happiness was seen. The anger that used to be there wasn't seen. I am happier with that. Leading India to their first ever Test win over England at Edgbaston will remain one of his "happiest memories" whenever the time comes to call it quits, said India captain Shubman Gill revelling in the resounding series-levelling victory in Birmingham. For the 25-year-old whose captaincy stint began with India losing the series opener at Leeds, Gill underlined an all-round show from the team to make a strong comeback that was also the team's first win over the hosts in Edgbaston. "This is something that I would cherish for the rest of my life; probably whenever I would retire, I think this would be one of my most happiest memories," Gill said in a video shared by BCCI. "I was meant to take the last catch of this match, and (I am) very content and happy that how we were able to finish this match. "(There are) three more important matches to go; a quick turnaround after this one and I think it's good because the momentum is now with us." Gill said Indian players took responsibility for their performances. "The way everyone came in contributed with the ball, with the bat, those are huge positives," he said. "When there are different people stepping up and different people performing at different stages, that's what you want. That's what makes a champion team, and those were some great signs for us." In his dressing room speech, the Indian skipper lauded his teammates. "We have worked very hard to win this position. Over the past six to eight months, I knew how hard it was to be able to get a Test win, especially to do it here where we haven't won a Test match ever," he said. "I just want to say that I'm very proud of you, everyone, because I think on day one, we mentioned it's going to take each and every one of us to win a Test match, especially here in this country and everyone contributed," Gill added. Mohammed Siraj said Akash Deep was meant to get a five-wicket haul. Siraj's 6/99 also proved instrumental in India's win. "To be honest it was an important match of an important series. As a player, it feels great to create such memorable (moments) and history," Siraj said. "Whenever he was bowling, I was positioned at mid-off. I was telling him don't just go after taking wickets, keep bowling in one area and you will get the wickets. "Jaisa first innings me bola tha, agar uski kismat me hai, to panja milega. Second innings, next day, dekho panja mil chuka hai (I had said in the first innings that if he has a five-for in his fate, he will get it. Look, he got one in the second innings),' an elated Siraj added. Siraj said he would rate this as the third biggest Test win of his career. "This is the third best match of my life. First was Gabba, then Lord's and now this. I cannot describe this feeling," he said. Akash Deep added, "The biggest thing is that I took five wickets and our team won. It is a proud moment for me that I contributed in the team's win. I won't be as happy had I taken a maiden five-for and the game ended in a draw." India vice-captain Rishabh Pant said this team wants to "defy all the past", referring to the side's underwhelming overseas record. "The last time we came here, the task was incomplete at Edgbaston and this time, so happy that we were able to achieve it," he said. "One thing that we always talk about is how we can learn as a team and defy all the past, whatever we have done but bringing this team together and making it to a different level, that's is all we need."
