Neil Druckmann Is Leaving ‘The Last Of Us' Season 3, Craig Mazin Goes Solo

The Last of Us
There was a general sense in The Last of Us season 2 that Craig Mazin was taking the show and character of Ellie in strange directions, and only when The Last of Us game co-creator Neil Druckmann stepped in did things get better.
Well, a new report from The Ankler says that Druckmann is leaving The Last of Us season 3 entirely and will hand everything over to Mazin now. Here's what Druckmann told The Ankler:
'I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season two and before any meaningful work starts on season three, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as studio head and head of creative,' Druckmann said in a statement to The Ankler about his decision, which he planned to share with Naughty Dog staff Wednesday.
'Co-creating the show has been a career highlight. It's been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct and write on the last two seasons. I'm deeply thankful of the thoughtful approach and dedication the talented cast and crew took to adapting The Last of Us Part I and their continued adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. I look forward to HBO and PlayStation Productions continuing Ellie and Abby's story next season.'
The Last of Us
While it's understandable that Druckmann needs to shift his focus to the enormous AAA video game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, this leaves the Emmy-winning HBO series in a tough spot, given how unsteady Mazin has been with the source material the characters. Mazin has said that it will take at least two more seasons in order to finish out The Last of Us Part II. There are not any reported creative differences between the duo, just that Druckmann has responsibilities at Naughty Dog, it seems.
The Last of Us is about to enter a tough new era where it will be at least two years from now that the show will return, and do so without the core cast as it focuses on the just-introduced character of Abby for what is likely to be almost all of season 3. This is how the game worked, yes, but with TV being a different format and these expansive breaks between seasons, it's a big issue. Then, we'll have another season another 2-2.5 years after that, it seems.
This isn't good news. Not that Mazin can't make good seasons by himself, but Druckmann was clearly a big part of why the series worked, especially in season 1 and in his limited episodes in season 2. Things look shaky from here.

‘South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are not happy about the Paramount/Skydance merger

'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone don't find anything funny about the planned acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media. 'In response to the press release from Comedy Central about the change in premiere date for South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone said: This merger is a s**tshow and it's f**king up South Park,' the two wrote in a post shared on social media. 'We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.' 'South Park' airs on Comedy Central, which is a part of Paramount. The company is in the process of being sold to Skydance Media. New episodes of 'South Park' were scheduled to air after a two-year wait on July 9. The Season 27 premiere has been pushed to July 23. The delay comes amid uncertainty and negotiations over streaming rights to the popular animated property, according to Deadline. 'South Park' had an exclusive streaming contract with HBO Max that expired last week. Paramount Global recently announced an agreement to pay $16 million to resolve a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump over a '60 Minutes' news report aired on CBS last fall. The merger is reportedly expected to close on July 6, though it could possibly be extended.

CRIMSON TIDE 2 Is Surfacing: Jerry Bruckheimer Teases Sequel, Eyes Denzel Washington's Return — GeekTyrant

It's been three decades since Crimson Tide first detonated in theaters. This was an intense, claustrophobic thriller of submarine warfare, nuclear standoffs, and powerhouse performances. I never thought we'd ever see a sequel, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer is ready to dive back into the deep. During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Bruckheimer revealed that a Crimson Tide sequel is in early development. 'We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what's going on under the water.' Bruckheimer didn't drop any names, but the project is in motion! The big question is will Denzel Washington return as Commander Hunter? Well, Bruckheimer said: 'If we give him a good script, I think he'd do it.' A source close to Washington confirmed that his involvement hinges entirely on the script, which, as of now, hasn't been completed. If Washington does come aboard, he'll be without his original on-screen counterpart. Gene Hackman, who played the hard-ass Captain Ramsey, passed away earlier this year at age 95. The original director, Tony Scott, and co-writer Robert Towne have also passed on. Reflecting on the original film's talent, Bruckheimer said: 'We had Tony Scott, a phenomenal director. We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne, two of the greatest writers and directors, writing on that movie. … I don't know if I'll ever replicate that kind of writing for a film.' While Michael Schiffer received the official screenwriting credit, Crimson Tide went through several hands. Quentin Tarantino added uncredited dialogue punch-ups, and names like Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Tommy Lee Jones, and Brad Pitt circled the project at various stages. Bruckheimer, who stopped by Eisen's show to promote his upcoming racing film F1 no stranger to slow-burn sequels. After all, it took nearly four decades to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground. He's hoping the same won't be true for Crimson Tide 2 . As for the upcoming Top Gun 3 , Bruckheimer teased: 'I can't talk about [the story] yet, but it's a real good one.' I would love to see Bruckheimer get Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinki on board with this! I know he's make a badass sequel! The original movie is freakin' fantastic!
