Error-ridden Springboks stumble in Mbombela as feisty Georgia make a statement
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will be unsure whether to laugh or cry as his team were poor and wonderful in equal measure on their way to beating Georgia 55-10 in Mbombela on Saturday night.
Either way, the Boks were put through a serious examination by the Lelos, and perhaps it was the ideal way for the Boks to finish their four-match block of games that warm them up for the Rugby Championship, which kicks off in a month.
Ideal because they will know they are some way off their best form, and a mountain of improvement is required if they are to beat the All Blacks in Auckland on September 6, the match which is the climax of the Boks' international season.
We know the Georgians are tough — their national sport is wrestling — but few could have predicted that the double world champions would be forced into their most unconvincing start to a match in years.
It was not easy on the eye for the 40,000 in the Mbombela Stadium as the Lelos blasted out of the blocks. Captain Siya Kolisi was bowled over in a frenzied forward assault and went off for a concussion assessment.
Kwagga Smith was on for Kolisi after a minute and a half. He had just taken his place when the visitors silenced the stadium with a perfectly executed try off the back of a maul, with hooker Vano Karkadze granted the score even though the TV replay showed that Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu had got his hands underneath the ball.
Georgia hadn't received the memo that they would be little more than tackle bags. It took the Boks ten minutes to settle, and two tries were scored by debutants in quick succession, both from close quarters.
First prop Boan Venter crashed over, and then local boy Marnus van der Merwe went over off the back of a lineout.
In the 13th minute, Kolisi returned and was on hand to see Van der Merwe score.
Georgia almost scored again, this time from a slick backline movement, with a flying cover tackle by Aphelele Fassi saving the day.
The Boks' third try was a beauty. A magnificent backline movement, replete with nifty passing, produced a clean break by Grant Williams, and then Canan Moodie finished powerfully, replicating his effort from Gquberha the week before when he took two defenders on his back.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu sent his third consecutive conversion attempt wide.
Penalties were flowing the way of the eastern Europeans as their pressure told on the Boks. They were shrugging off the defensive intensity of the Boks, and as the half-hour mark approached, they won a penalty for Luka Matkava to kick over for a 15-10 scoreline to the Boks.
Van der Merwe scored his second, again off the tail of a rolling maul, to give the Boks a dubious 22-10 lead at half time.
The first try of the second half was scored by Edwill van der Merwe, his fourth try in his third match for his country. It came from a bulldozing effort by Pieter-Steph du Toit in the Georgia 22m, and a long pass by Williams saw Van der Merwe run the try in.
Handre Pollard replaced the off-colour Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the 55th minute, and one of his first actions was to put Damian Willemse through a gap for a try off a scrum near the Georgia line.
Faf de Klerk was on for Williams, and what a fantastic cameo he enjoyed as he fights for his place in the greater Springbok squad. He was like a terrier on steroids as he buzzed about the field, his old home ground when he was with the Pumas.
And with seven minutes remaining, he nudged a kick over the defence in the Georgia 22 for Edwill van der Merwe to gather and score his second.
With time up on the clock, the Boks showed great ambition to run from their tryline, with Pollard scoring in the last movement of the match.

Venter buzzing for more Bok Test action
Burly prop Boan Venter is buzzing for more outings in the green and gold jersey when the Springboks kick off their Rugby Championship campaign with back-to-back Tests against the Wallabies in August. Venter made a dream start to his Test career when he dived over for a try after eight minutes during the Boks' crushing 55-10 win against Georgia in Mbombela last week. Starting alongside fellow debutants Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouché, Venter played an important role in the emphatic victory. He was rewarded for his efforts by being named in a 37-man Springbok squad to face Australia in Johannesburg (August 16) and Cape Town (August 23). 'On the performance side, it was buzzing to have made my debut and get a try in there as well,' he said. 'We'll reflect on the performance in the review — there's always stuff you can improve on. But overall, just really happy to get on the pitch.' Venter, who joined Edinburgh from the Cheetahs in 2021, looked set to be called up to the Scottish squad after qualifying on residency rules for the 2026 Six Nations. 'From being a young boy playing rugby from about five or seven years old, it's every South African's dream to play for the Springboks, so when I got that call, that was it for me,' he said. 'At the end of the day, what counts is that I am here and it was so great to slot into this group. 'Everyone was so welcoming and helped us hit the ground running. 'Since the team was announced, we felt the support of the whole group. 'We jokingly call the Bok back five the V8, and you can feel the power coming through. 'As a group, we are tight and try to pick each other up and be supportive, and it played a massive role in giving us confidence leading up to the game. 'It's a level up from club rugby. 'Not much in terms of due process but it's definitely a level up. 'I wouldn't say it surprised me; it was just nice to see again how big rugby is in SA. 'It's inspirational to see a whole nation get behind a team and they know how much that support means to the team.' Bok coach Rassie Erasmus said Venter had not been chosen to block him from playing for Scotland. 'That didn't have an influence,' he said. 'It is nicer for us to see guys such as Duhan van der Merwe play for Scotland because he probably would not have got a chance from us. 'So, why would you choose a guy to block him?' 'We really went and looked at who was the next loose head in line, and he was on our radar.' Scotland coach Gregor Townsend would not be drawn on whether Venter would have been part of his plans if he had not played for the Boks. 'I think he's been one of the best players in the URC the last two or three years,' he said. 'This year was probably his best season. 'Whether it's the set-piece or his ball-carrying, he's really impressed. 'We wish him all the best. 'He's now embarking on an international career and it shows the quality of the player he is.' Asked whether he had any regrets relating to Venter's decision to play for SA, Townsend said: 'It's really hypothetical. 'He wasn't going to be available for a few months and it's hypothetical until it happens. 'It's not going to happen now.' The Herald

Are these three Springbok stalwarts being phased out?
As the Springboks begin to plot and plan the team's best pathway to the 2027 World Cup, it is inevitable that some senior players will begin to fall by the wayside. Rassie Erasmus has made it clear that there will need to be some careful consideration given to the average age of the squad that heads to the next global showpiece. However, as long as some veterans continue to meet their key performance metrics, they can keep themselves firmly in the mix. With all this in mind, though, it was revealing that Erasmus did release three veterans from an otherwise near full-strength squad for the start of the Rugby Championship. So, what does the future hold for Faf de Klerk, Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am? Faf de Klerk A star performer during the 2019 and 2023 World Cup triumphs, De Klerk missed a large part of last season due to injury, and in his absence the likes of Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg have begun to take big strides forward. De Klerk is now 33-years-old, and while this may be a consideration to some degree, it can't be forgotten that Cobus Reinach remains in the latest Springbok squad at the age of 35. Faf came off the bench in the first Test against Italy and against Georgia, so he's certainly not out of the picture just yet despite falling down the pecking order to some degree. Verdict: There IS more to come. Makazole Mapimpi The veteran wing will soon celebrate his 35th birthday on 26 July, and although Mapimpi is still in great shape, even he has admitted that it's highly unlikely he'd make it through to the next World Cup. Mapimpi has lost his spot in the Springboks' first choice starting line-up to Kurt-Lee Arendse, and other young wingers such as Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe have shown great potential for the future. Nevertheless, Mapimpi did display great form for the Sharks this past season, and the Springboks know the value of his reliability and experience. Verdict: Mapimpi might battle to make it to the next World Cup, but over the next two years, he should still have an opportunity to prove that age is just a number. Lukhanyo Am In recent times, injuries have really plagued the progress of the 31-year-old, and at the same time Jesse Kriel has established a firm grip on the No 13 jersey. It is evident that the Springboks also view talented Canan Moodie as a strong back up option at outside centre, perhaps also prompting the decision to release Am at this stage. However, there is no doubt that the Springboks do need some more depth at outside centre, and the national coaches will be desperately hoping to see Am get back to his best fitness and form. Verdict: Don't count him out just yet, age IS still on his side. Forwards: Lood de Jager (Wild Knights), Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz), Jean-Luc du Preez (Bordeaux Begles), Eben Etzebeth (Sharks), Vincent Koch (Sharks), Siya Kolisi (Sharks), Wilco Louw (Vodacom Bulls), Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), Bongi Mbonambi (Sharks), Franco Mostert (Honda Heat), Ox Nche (Sharks), Ruan Nortje (Vodacom Bulls), Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Lions), Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs), RG Snyman (Leinster), Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets), Marco van Staden (Vodacom Bulls), Boan Venter (Edinburgh), Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Wiese (Vodacom Bulls). Backs: Kurt-Lee Arendse (Vodacom Bulls), Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), Andre Esterhuizen (Sharks), Aphelele Fassi (Sharks), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (Stormers), Ethan Hooker (Sharks), Jesse Kriel (Canon Eagles), Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath), Willie le Roux (Vodacom Bulls), Manie Libbok (Hanazono Kintetsu Liners), Canan Moodie (Vodacom Bulls), Handre Pollard (Vodacom Bulls), Cobus Reinach (Stormers), Edwill van der Merwe (Sharks), Morne van den Berg (Lions), Grant Williams (Sharks), Damian Willemse (Stormers). The Currie Cup is back in the spotlight
Could Boland spring a surprise in the opening weekend? Trevor Nyakane celebrates with the rest of the Sharks team, who won the Currie Cup in 2024. Picture: Christiaan Kotze/Gallo Images The 2025 edition of the Currie Cup kicks off on Friday with a full round of fixtures and eight teams in action, all chasing glory in a few months' time. With several Springbok players out of action because of their involvement with the Rugby Championship, which gets underway in the middle of next month, and other United Rugby Championship players still resting, there is an opportunity for a number of up-and-coming players to make their mark over the next few weeks. Also, a number of players who featured for the Junior Springboks in their U20 Championship-winning campaign in Italy will get a chance to show what they can do at a higher level. Who's favoured to win this weekend? Of course there will also be an opportunity for punters to get in on the action and each week Betway will give fans a chance to bank some bucks. In the competition opener on Friday night, the Pumas are favourites at 1.16 to beat Griquas, who're at 5.50 to cause an early upset. On Saturday, the Lions are hot favourites at 1.20 to beat the Sharks, who're at 4.50 to win in Joburg, while Western Province are 1.50 to beat the Bulls in the Cape, with the visitors at 2.60 to win. In the final game of the first round, Boland, who're back in the top flight of the competition, are 3.40 underdogs, at home, to beat the Cheetahs, who're at 1.33 to win, according to Betway. It promises to be an entertaining first round of action. These Betway odds correct at time of publishing and subject to change.
