Tall Ships Aberdeen: 'Party city' event gets under sail
The city council said it would issue updates if there was any impact on the event as a result.Aberdeen will be turned into a "party city", according to the organisers.It runs until Tuesday, when the ships will then sail on to Norway.
The Granite City previously hosted the tall ships in 1991 and 1997.Greenock and Lerwick are among other Scottish towns to have featured in the event's history, which dates back to the 1970s.
The event is billed as Europe's largest free family event.Almost 50 ships have been confirmed as taking part in Aberdeen.There will be about 2,000 international crew members taking part, from as far afield as Uruguay and Oman.Hundreds of volunteers have been recruited to help at the event, which is expected to attract about "400,000 visits" - an estimate which includes repeat visits.The races are designed to encourage international friendship and training for young people in the art of sailing.
What ships are taking part?
The vessels are divided into four classes, ranging from large sailing ships to smaller single-masted boats.Dar Mlodziezy, from Poland, is the tallest at 62.5m (205ft) high.Built in 1982, she made her Tall Ships debut in the same year.Her name means "the gift of youth".
The BAP Union is the furthest travelled, having come to Aberdeen from Peru.BAP Union's sailing distance from Callao to Aberdeen is about 7,500 nautical miles (13,890km).
The skipper of Norwegian vessel Sorlandet, Captain Tore Skjelbred-Knudsen, is looking forward to the event."It's a gathering of these ships, it's a beautiful sight, it's maritime history, we can show that to the people of Aberdeen," he told BBC Scotland News."But most of all it's for the young people joining the ships, it's changing their lives."He added: "As a former student at the University of Aberdeen, I have been truly looking forward to visiting again. "Even if it is a couple of decades ago, I vividly remember the charm, the friendly people, the vast culture, and all the friends I made during my time there."
Emma Wadee, Aberdeen City Council's Tall Ships Project Manager, said: "We hope people will turn out in their thousands again to enjoy everything on offer at The Tall Ships Races and help turn the Granite City into party city from morning to night. "We know how much the people of Aberdeen love to party - we saw that during the Dons' Scottish Cup victory parade."
Where is the best place to view Tall Ships Aberdeen?
The ships will be berthed in Waterloo Quay, Regent Quay, Trinity Quay, Upper Quay, Jamieson's Quay and Blaikies Quay. Full details of where each ship will be can be found here. The main entrance to the harbour area will be via Marischal Street. Many of the ships will be open to visitors during their time in Aberdeen.
What other entertainment is there at Tall Ships Aberdeen?
Following on from Deacon Blue on Friday night, other gigs will include Kaiser Chiefs.Additional attractions will include free live music, and street food stalls.Aside from the main names, other acts include Tide Lines, Calum Bowie, Glasvegas, Brooke Combe, Little Kicks, Capollos and Look Busy Collective.
The event organisers say there will also be a "vibrant" line-up of live music, including Scottish trad, jazz, Afrobeat, hip hop, and Latin soul.The line-up also features local choirs as well as youth ensembles.Young children will be catered for with attractions at a family zone at Blaikie's Quay, including a giant sandpit.People can also get their picture taken with Tall Ships Aberdeen mascot, Dorry the Dolphin, during the festival.
What will Tall Ships Aberdeen travel be like?
Aberdeen city centre is expected to be very busy with tens of thousands of spectators each day. The organisers are recommending that people use public transport or car share if coming into Aberdeen, and that those staying locally could walk or cycle.Four regular Park and Ride services will be in operation from Bridge of Don, Craibstone, P&J Live, and Kingswells.Road closures and parking restrictions will be place on streets around Aberdeen harbour during the course of the event. Castle Street, King Street, Marischal Street, Regent Quay, Blaikies Quay and Regent Road are among those affected. Summer Storm Floris set to bring strong winds and heavy rain, with greatest impacts in the north
The Met Office has named the sixth storm of the season, Storm Floris, which will arrive on Monday which will bring unusually strong winds across the northern half of the UK. Wind gusts are expected to reach 40-50mph inland with gusts of 60-70mph possible along exposed coasts in the north and west. There is scope for Scottish coastlines and high ground to see damaging wind gusts of up to 80mph. A yellow wind warning has been issued for Scotland, Northern England, Northern Ireland, and North Wales, where the strongest winds and most significant impacts are expected. Elsewhere across England and Wales, it will still feel unseasonably windy, but the effects are likely to be less severe. Heavy rain will also accompany the strong winds, particularly across western-facing hills, leading to challenging driving conditions. Winds will gradually ease from the west through Monday evening and overnight into Tuesday.

The underwear-as-outerwear look might be fine for a 20-year-old model strutting the catwalk, but how can lacy, silky, wispy clothes translate to real life? As a fashion director, I've tried it out, and personally, I've found the look unflattering, poorly cut, too bum-skimming and wildly revealing, especially as someone with a 34DD bust. However, when I spotted my favourite influencer of all time, Vivian Horn, wafting around Europe in the Zara asymmetric brown lace dress I finally felt tempted to try again. Nightie dressing is a huge trend for 2025, with celebrities and fashion types alike jumping on the bandwagon, and some of the high street takes look gorgeous – but would they work on my curvy size 14 body? Zara asymmetric slip dress £49.99 Shop I ordered the dress and unpacked it with slight dread, anticipating the deep disappointment I'd feel once I wriggled into it. Except once the dress was on, I didn't feel like that at all. I felt fantastic. This dress is cut to perfection. The asymmetric split hem hangs beautifully, the colour is rich and is hugely flattering on nearly all skin tones. The feel of the fabric completely exceeds its £49.99 price point and the lace trim is thick and well placed. I sized up for movement and length (as a 5ft 10 woman I find Zara mini dresses usually skim the wrong side of my bottom otherwise). I have never felt sexier in a slip dress and I finally understood the hype around 'lingerie dressing' that has been spamming my inbox for the last five years. This elation was short lived as my rather jolly husband came in and was like 'I LOVE THAT, oh wait, is that indoor or outdoor clothes?!'. I explained (very firmly) that it was fashion and that I felt fabulous in it and would wear it in another heatwave or on holiday. Little did I know I wouldn't have to wait that long as I decided it was the perfect thing to wear to my Auntie's surprise 60th birthday party last weekend. However as I came downstairs my mother-in-law had very similar questions to her son including 'Are you wearing actual lingerie?' Both my husband and mother-in-law largely support my fashion choices, but they both pointed out I looked a touch too nude for the UK. Clearly I needed to tone the look down a tad. I decided to try the dress over a pair of brown wide leg trousers that I also recently bought from Zara and immediately loved the full look. The dress hangs beautifully over them and although you could see the tailored waist band it looked nonchalant and stylish. I should also flag another trend I have rolled my big old millennial eyes at is a dress over trousers, so for this look I am really breaking all of my own style rules. But as I came down to leave both my husband and his mother agreed I looked much more ready for the 'outdoors'. How to style the underwear-as-outerwear trend 1. Pick your trousers carefully If you're going to layer a nightie-style dress over trousers, I would advise sticking to a wider cut trouser, or even a tailored straight pair. Not skinny though; anything too slim fitting will throw off your silhouette. If opting for a wide leg a soft flowing material is preferable but have fun with colours, either keep it fully tonal like I did or clash completely. Pale blue slip dress? Try a red pair! 2. Layer over a knit Another top tip if this trend feels daunting is to get a knit in either a contrasting colour or a neutral tone and tie round your shoulders. It gives you a bit more coverage and also makes the slip top or dress feel more casual. I prefer this to wearing a white T-shirt under these items as I feel juvenile and bulky with my breasts rammed under that many layers. Others will love that look though! 3. Keep your footwear subtle (no stilettos!) In order to avoid feeling too dolled up I paired the look with a simple pair of flip flops in the same dark brown. It felt modern and easy and I really loved the look. If you want to wear it for an evening I love the current leather flip flop style heel and this will have the same affect of feeling dressy but not too flash. 4. Go anti-girly with jewellery I also think accessories are key to nailing this trend. It is already a very feminine trend with the soft silks, lace and pretty pastel colours so I would go for a contrast when choosing my jewellery. Chunky gold or even mixed metal pieces stop the look feeling too vintage or girly. 5. Invest in the right underwear These dresses and tops can be particularly hard to navigate with a larger bust so here are my top 3 buys for managing intricate necklines and straps. These stick on bras work amazingly, I have worn them to Summer (read hot and sweaty) weddings where I have danced the night away and my bosom has not dropped. You can also cut them to fit your neckline. Club L Lift and shape bra 4-pack £49 Shop This Skims strapless bra feels as if you are wearing nothing and is so comfortable! Not ideal for cut outs due to its block shape but for flimsy lace straps it's perfect. And finally – the M&S multi-way bra. Adjust the straps into almost any formation and use the clear back strap to avoid anything sticking out at the back. The 'worst show the BBC has ever broadcast' returns TONIGHT - just months after the controversial series had its lowest ratings ever
The fifth series of Mrs Brown's Boys will return to our screens this Friday (1 August 2025) - just months after the controversial series had its lowest ratings. It comes after the return of the BBC show was confirmed last month - despite pleas from viewers and scandal surrounding the show's creator. Mrs Brown's Boys, created and written by Brendan O'Carroll, hit BBC One in 2011. The programme has gone on to air 51 episodes across four seasons on the channel. BBC iPlayer's synopsis reads: 'Loud-mouthed Irish matriarch Agnes Brown's favourite pastime is meddling in the lives of her six children. Sauciness and slapstick.' It stars the likes of Brendan O'Carroll, Jennifer Gibney, Eilish O'Carroll, Danny O'Carroll, Rory Cowan, Fiona O'Carroll, Pat Shields, Paddy Houlihan and Amanda Woods. Although the programme is returning this evening at 9:30pm, the sitcom has definitely received mixed reviews over the years, with many failing to connect with its humour. One previously wrote on X: 'Worst programme in human history should've never been commissioned.' 'Just speechless... I honestly don't know one person who thinks this show is remotely funny.' 'I don't know anyone who will admit to liking, or even just watching, this show.' Despite that others have recently shared their praise over the show, with one saying: 'Love love love Mrs Brown's Boys.' 'MRS BROWNS BOYS IS BACK TOMORROW.' 'Can't wait for it. If that humor isn't for you, don't watch it. It's been on long enough now to know what to expect, yet people still choose to watch it anyway.' Mrs Brown's Boys was last on our screens during the festive period. The 2024 Christmas special saw its ratings plummet to the lowest ever, with viewers claiming it 'ruined' their holiday spirit. The sitcom attracted a measly 2.2m viewers on Christmas Day, which was a huge drop from the 11.5m who turned into the show's 2013 December 25 special. While Mrs Brown's Boys struggled in the ratings, elsewhere on BBC1, Gavin and Stacey: The Finale was the most watched show of the festive season with 12.5m, while Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl attracted 9.5m. The latest episode of Mrs Brown's Boys, which has previously been described as 'marmite television ', saw the Irish matriarch trying to convince her family that she was not grumpy like Scrooge, but those at home described it as 'spectacularly unfunny'. And while the TV show has certainly ruffled a lot of feathers, creator and star Brendan made a brutal comeback to the negative comments. Speaking on the Conversations with Gerry Kelly podcast back in 2024, Brendan said: 'The ones that love me, I love them, and the ones that don't, f*** them.' The return was announced back in July. The BBC said: 'Agnes Brown and the gang from Finglas are back! 'Everyone's favourite Irish Mammy returns for a brand new fifth series featuring all your favourite characters, so get ready for more slapstick shenanigans this spring!' While BBC comedy boss John Petrie said: 'Brendan has created an iconic comedy character in Agnes Brown.
