Players Australian schools girls sevens coach wants in his 2025 squad
Zerames and selectors will closely watch three days of school girls sevens competition to identify players to go into Australian schools 18s and U16s merit squads.
Only players selected next month in the U18s schools team from these two squads will play at the Global Youth Sevens in New Zealand later this year.
However selection on the Sunshine Coast is important as it provides all players with a unique opportunity to learn from the best and impress coaching staff working with the elite Australian sevens squad being formed for the next Olympics in LA and then the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.
'We are looking for girls who can perform well across a number of fixtures with a big load of a day of four fixtures,'' Zerames said.
SCHOOLS SEVENS DAY 1 WRAP
'We want ones that can be consistent and those with X-factor or good social skills.
'Girls who have endurance, have that little bit of grit late in the game when energy levels are low and the chips are down.
'Plus athletic ability, speed, acceleration, high IQ and eyes-up awareness.
'With sevens its not one size fits all. We also need players who are physical, we want girls who thrive with that physiclaity. Physical prowess, a beast at the breakdown.''
Aside from skills Zerames said he wants good people.
'Their character is more important than anything,'' he said.
'We want good people on and off the field, that are coachable and can play a team game.
'That ability in a sevens tournament to move on, not dwell on a bad game.
'This is a major pathway for them.''

Trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton always knew Getafix had talent and the gelding is now showing it with consecutive wins
A Jason Collett masterclass propelled emerging sprinter Getafix to a thrilling last-gasp success at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Collett expertly wove a passage through the field from back in the pack to help the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton -trained galloper arrive in the nick of time TAB Benchmark 88 Handicap (1400m). Getafix ($4) showed an explosive turn of speed late to nail Joseph Pride 's Cool Jakey ($6.50) on the line with the Ciaron Maher -trained It's A Knockout ($2.05 favourite) in third. 'He is a big, strong, powerful horse,' Charlton said. 'He has got good ability and is capable of getting to stakes level in time. 'He is only a three-year-old and if there was stakes race in three weeks' time for a three-year-old he would be a likely candidate. 'We will just keep doing what we are doing with him and build his confidence.' Getafix has always been a horse O'Shea and Charlton have held in high regard and the son of Calyx has now started to show it. He demolished rivals by more than five lengths at the midweeks before backing it up with a terrific sprinting effort on his home track. Charlton expects Getafix will measure up in stakes company soon. Getafix STORMS home to make it back-to-back wins taking out race 8 at Randwick in a tight photo finish! ðŸ'¸ Jason Collett makes it a race-to-race double! ✌ï¸ @JohnOSheaRacing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 12, 2025 • Maher import Supreme in first Aussie win 'Even today he didn't relax as well as he could but he is a pretty useful horse,' he said. 'That is 88 grade for a three-year-old so that's a pretty good effort. 'At the end of his two-year-old season and as a three-year-old, him and Linebacker were the ones we thought could shape up pretty well and he has just taken a bit more time to work towards that.' Linebacker, the winner of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas in the autumn, is back in work and preparing for the spring carnival. A date with the $10m Golden Eagle is among the top options for the star son of Super Seth in the coming months. 'Linebacker is one that will work towards a Golden Eagle but in saying that he will probably work towards an Epsom first,' Charlton said. 'If suddenly he is crying out for further we'd have to do that but he is already qualified for a Golden Eagle and you only get one chance at that. 'He's about a month off a trial and would probably get to an Epsom third-up. He won't get a Winx Stakes or anything like that.'

Narrandera preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 13, 2025
The last two years has seen the Narrandera Cup head south of the border to Craig Weeding's stable and he's hoping to do it for a third time. Both the 2023 and 2024 editions of the race were run and won by Prince Of Helena and the Wangaratta-based conditioner has that galloper back for a third straight win and in similar form. The eight-year-old son of Sidestep finished third two starts ago in the Swan Hill Cup prior to running on for fifth at Flemington behind subsequent Winter Championship Final winner Jimmy The Bear. And while not winning since last year's edition of the Narrandera Cup, Weeding is happy with how he's going and thinks the race might even be a touch easier this year. Prince Of Helena wins the Narrandera Showcase Cup and makes it into the Big Dance again! ðŸ† â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 14, 2024 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'I think he's probably coming in with similar or maybe even better form than he has over the last few years,' Weeding said. 'He hit the line pretty good last time in a strong race at Flemington and the form out of that race has been pretty good too. 'Running on well behind a horse like Jimmy The Bear should be a good measuring stick for a Narrandera Cup and just looking at the numbers, it is probably not as strong as last year's Cup.' With the Narrandera Cup winner being eligible for the Big Dance, Prince Of Helena has headed to Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day previously but he's no certainty to target that race again, even if he were to win at Narrandera. 'We've gone the last few years and haven't measured up for various reasons and I think even if he was to win this year, we probably may not go down that path this year with him,' said Weeding. 'We just weren't quite up to it and he's getting older now so we would just be happy to win this race. 'I'm not saying he's 100 per cent not going to push on if he were to win but I've just got that in the back of my mind.' Weeding has one other runner in the $70,000 main event at Narrandera with four-year-old gelding Yam looking to increase his winning streak to four. Vegas Dream dives at Yam and gets there in the nick of time! @AlburyRacing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 29, 2024 It's a big step in grade but Yam will get in with a light weight after the claim for Mitch Beer's apprentice, Holly Durnan. Yam has enjoyed racing in the wet conditions and Weeding is hoping the track remains a Soft 6 for his latest test. 'He's going great and has just been loving these wet tracks,' Weeding said. 'If he can get a wet track on Sunday I reckon he'll come right into it and be tough to beat.' Both of Weeding's brigade had plenty of fortune following the barrier draw with Prince Of Helena set to jump from the inside while Yam was handed gate three. A field of 12 plus one emergency accepted for the Cup and there's formlines across multiple states. South Australian galloper Not Usual Glorious is set to add plenty of intrigue in the race but is asked to carry 62.5kg while Zouatica is a last start narrow placegetter in Sydney behind Thunderlips. While Weeding has two in the Cup, he's got Big Day Out chasing win number 11 at his 80th start in the fourth race. 'He's been a great horse for the stable and has won more than $300,000 throughout his career,' Weeding said. 'It was good to see him show that he's still got it and win impressively last start so hopefully he can do it again.' JETT HATTON'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 8 No. 2: ZOUATICA Just run down last time. Can chalk up another win. NEXT BEST Race 3 No. 5: FIRST DAY Won by a big space last start and can win again. VALUE BET Race 1 No. 1: MO SPIRIT Made ground for fourth on a heavy track last start. Better barrier here. WORTH A RISK Race 8 No.6: COUNTY KILKENNY Won't get this his own way here. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 3, 4, 7 Race 6: 4, 6 Race 7: 1 Race 8: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW NICK HEYWOOD has only three rides but they all look like winning chances. INSIDE MAIL — NARRANDERA MO SPIRIT (1) is going better than the formguide would suggest. Got a long way back last start at Wagga on a very heavy track but made good ground to run fourth. Better barrier here, something he hasn't had at the last few starts. GIOLA RIVER (6) ran on well last start at Wagga. Drawn well here in barrier one and should be rock hard fit on the quick back up. DANTAINS PRIZE (4) missed the kick last start and couldn't get into the race from there. Form prior reads super for this. Bet: Mo Spirit to win â– â– â– â– â– DEKADANCE (7) hasn't raced in about 46 weeks. Last sighted finishing third to Highway Strip and Ghost Walker, which are super formlines for this contest. Liked her latest trial and think she can return with a win. TRIPTOLEMUS (12) finished third in Dekadance's trial. Looks to have a bit of upside. SPICE OF DUBAI (10) had two trials before changing stables to Tim Donnelly's yard. Won her latest trial but thought the piece of work was just OK. Rolled forward in that heat and would expect her to do something similar here. Bet: Dekadance to win â– â– â– â– â– FIRST DAY (5) won by a big space last start at Wagga over the 2000m. Looks like a promising staying mare out of Ben Brisbourne's yard and she can win again. DOC MARCH (10) is an 11 start maiden but matched it with Due Calzini last start and he did it tough too, trapped four wide without cover across the journey. I think he'll really enjoy the extra ground for this. DUE CALZINI (4) has enjoyed getting out over a trip and now Danielle Seib steps him up again to 2100m. Should be thereabouts on the speed from barrier three, but needs to do a bit to turn the tables on First Day. Bet: First Day to win again â– â– â– â– â– PERIGEAN (5) has some solid form on the board prior to heading for the spelling paddock. Won two straight before tackling metro and provincial company. His record at the distance and when first-up would suggest he's going to be hard to beat for this. DANCEENUFF (7) has been racing well without winning. Should get every chance to break through from gate two with a winnable weight on her back. HELLS SON (9) was trapped wide the whole way last start at Wagga and under the big weight, couldn't tack on. With the rise in grade here he drops 7.5kg but has a poor barrier again. Bet: Perigean to win â– â– â– â– â– SWEET PAREE (3) has run two good second placings coming into this. Held up for a bit at the top of the straight last start before getting clear at the 250m mark. Suited by the step up to 1400m as well. GRACEFUL ELLEN (1) got back at Moruya last start and couldn't get into it but was a strong fresh winner before that. Drawn better here and think she's looking for the 1400m now. MAJOR DESIRE (5) did too much work from a double digit barrier last start and tired late. Now from barrier one, she can bounce to the front and have a bit more in the tank over the concluding stages. Bet: Sweet Paree to win â– â– â– â– â– ZOUWASE (6) won by three at the Sapphire Coast last time out before heading for a break. Judging by his latest trial, he's returned in good shape. Tricky barrier to overcome but the son of Zoustar has all the talent. INVASIVE (2) tackled a Highway last start and didn't disgrace himself. Got back to the rear and went past a few to run midfield. Form prior is super too. SLATE RIPPER (4) will appreciate the drop in grade. DUBAI CENTRE (1) is in the mix as well. â– â– â– â– â– COUGARS (1) wasn't far off in a very strong Highway last start. Up in weight and drawn off the track but expecting him to have too much ability for them here. ROLLO (2) tackled a Country Championships Qualifier at start five and handled himself well. Was a strong heat too and he finished seventh of 16. Drawn well but just might need the run. HELLINDA (3) took the sit behind the leader last start before pouncing away to win well. Has a super record at the distance. â– â– â– â– â– Only Thunderlips was able to run down ZOUATICA (2) last time out and that horse is stakes quality. Can speed across to lead again here and with those types of horses not chasing, he can chalk up a win. PRINCE OF HELENA (3) has won this race the last two years and is going as good, if not better. Hit the line strongly behind Jimmy The Bear last start and that horse has come out and franked the form by winning the Winter Championship Final. COUNTY KILKENNY (6) is ticking away nicely.

Grafton preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 13, 2025
Trainer Scott Singleton was a little surprised when he saw the field for the South Grafton Cup but an inside draw for Fiorsum Fred give him hope the gelding can run a cheeky race. Headlining the South Grafton Cup (1600m) is last start Listed Civic Stakes winner Headley Grange along with Listed Tatt's Mile runner-up Sibaaq and Big Dance runner-up Vivy Air. 'It has ended up a bit stronger race than I thought but the Big Eligibility gets them there but you have to be in it to win it,' Singleton said. 'He is down in the weights and has drawn well so we will see how we go.' Fiorsum Fred has 54kg while Headley Grange has top weight of 62kg, Sibaaq has 61kg and Vivy Air has 59kg The four-year-old drew barrier 5 but moved in one gate with the early scratching of Uzziah while those three rivals have drawn out on barriers 10, 8 and 13 respectively. Fiorsum Fred finds the gap and powers home at Scone! ðŸ'¥ @singletonracing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'It's a good draw for him because he's got enough speed to be handy so hopefully he will be just behind them with cover,' said Singleton. 'He will need the favourites to have a bit of luck go against them but he can bob up on his day and I wouldn't completely rule him out of it.' Fiorsum Fred is no stranger to Grafton after finishing runner-up to Rapt in the Guineas last year. The son of Fiorente heads back this weekend in better shape than his form may appear according to Singleton. 'That should have been a '1' next to his name last start at Tamworth,' he said. 'He just never got a clear crack at them at all in the straight and went to the line full of running. 'I would take him if he wasn't in really good order.' Joining Fiorsum Fred on the trip from Scone is Beyond My Ken in the Class 1 Handicap (1006m) and Another Peach in the Maiden Plate (1410m). Beyond My Ken showed good ability with a debut win from Manuscript and Fingers Hunter at Scone in March last year before a last to Linebacker in the Group 3 Baillieu at Rosehill. Hen then placed third at Muswellbrook in his only run last spring before returning with two seventh placings at Scone. Magical Elegance wins easily for @ANeashamRacing with @AlyshaCollett in the saddle! ðŸ' â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) February 10, 2025 'His form doesn't read as good as this horse is,' Singleton said. 'Since his first start when he won, everything has gone wrong. 'He pulled up lame at his next start at Rosehill and has had issue after issue since then. 'I've finally got him in the shape he was when he won on debut. 'He's finally drawn a good barrier too. 'I'm going there pretty confident that he is ready to do something. He's the one I'm most confident about.' Another Peach showed handy ability in her first campaign with placings in three of her four starts. She returned this preparation with a neck second to Kobold at Mudgee on July 6. 'It was a really sticky track and she just couldn't get away from them at the top of the straight,' said Singleton. 'Had it been a little bit drier, she probably wins but she stuck to her task well though. 'She pulled up unbelievably well and I'm confident she has come on a little bit which will have her right in the mix. 'While she has drawn out a little, the fact that her main dangers have drawn wider gives her a chance to roll across while they are covering a bit of ground which may be the difference in the end.' ADAM SHERRY'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Has been very good in both wins this campaign and set for the hat-trick. NEXT BEST Won his maiden in strong fashion before a close second. Battled away for third on debut at the Sunshine Coast last September. Sat wide and not pushed when fourth to Tribecca Star in her June 26 Murwillumbah trial. TORQUE TI AMO (11) made ground late when sixth here on debut last September. Not pushed when third in her June 22 Murwillumbah trial behind The Torque Xpress. GAYLORD (1) showed handy ability in his first campaign in Sydney including a debut second. Resumes from a long lay-off for a new stable. Nice trial win at Doomben the under a hold when fifth in his Murwillumbah heat. â– â– â– â– â– BEYOND MY KEN (5) beat Manuscript on debut at Scone last year but mixed results since. Was wide without cover when seventh at Scone last start. Drawn gate 1, Aaron Bullock rides and has some important gear changes. MOFEED (4) placed in five of his first seven starts. Returned from a long break with a two-and-a-half length all-the-way win at Scone on June 10. Kept fresh for this. STAR AMBITION (2) won at the Sunshine Coast on debut before a second at Eagle Farm. Ready to kick off this campaign after two trials wins. Bet: Beyond My Ken to win â– â– â– â– â– ANOTHER PEACH (4) ended last campaign with three consecutive placings. Started odds-on fav when resuming at Mudgee struggled to kick away on the wet ground when a neck second. Will be better for the run and good ground. HERALD ANGEL (6) debuted with a handy second to Divas Revenge over 1200m here on June 9. Raced wide without cover when third to Gavin at Murwillumbah last start. Drawn wide but looks suited stepping up to 1400m and gets a 2kg claim. PIEDI VELOCI (3) boxed on for second over 1315m at Coffs Harbour last start. Continues to improve. Bet: Another Peach to win â– â– â– â– â– MONTE MAXIMUS (3) was very good winning at Casino two starts ago before heading to Rosehill for a Class 3 TAB Highway when fifth Red Rags To Bulls over 1500m. Back to 1410m. AYE AYE SKIPPER (8) has had a long campaign but continues to race consistently. Won here over 1205m on May 9. Placed two of his last three including a second to Sammy Conquers All last time out and was a close fourth in the other. TALANA (6) has place claims from a good draw. â– â– â– â– â– SO YOU READY (4) raced wide without cover when fifth at Tamworth at his first go over 2100m. Broke his maiden with a three length at Gosford at his next start in a Class 1. Pipped by a nose at Scone last start and can go one better. FULMEN FILOU (3) is building towards his second career win. Came up from Victoria and finished a head third at Inverell over 1800m before jumping up to 2240m here when a nose second to Justice Served. Went back from the wide gate when second to Off The Scale last start. BRIGHT THE SUN (8) and Bold Splendour have place claims. â– â– â– â– â– HEADLEY GRANGE (1) was good beating Green Shadows when resuming over 1300m at Randwick. Too good for Welwal in the Listed Civic Stakes on June 21. Is a winner over 1600m and a winner at his race debut. SIBAAQ (2) has been out of the winners circle since the Wellington Cup three years ago but has run some good races since. Worked home well for second to Pier in the Listed Wayne Wilson and a head second to The Inflictor in the Listed Tatts Mile both over 1600m at Eagle Farm. VIVY AIR (3) has claims on her close second at Eagle Farm last start. FIORSUM FRED (13) can sneak a place. â– â– â– â– â– CARACORON (13) won his maiden here over 1700m last campaign before stepping up to 2110m and winning at Lismore. Kicked off this preparation with a nice closing seventh to Zouthur over 1350m at Doomben. Drawn well and the mile suits. TO BE FRANK (3) scored narrow but handy victories at Tamworth either side of a sixth to Boys Night Out in a TAB Highway at Rosehill. Two-time winner over this trip. SAXINOUE (8) went back from a wide gate and was doing his best work late when seventh here first-up. Followed with a third to Whomsonever at Murwillumbah.
