DepEd has opening for 20,000 new teachers, says Angara
The positions—Teacher I, Special Needs Education Teacher (SNET), and Special Science Teacher I—will be distributed to all regions based on school directories, enrollment data, and validated teacher shortages.
The Department of Education (DepEd) is looking to hire more new teachers after the Department of Budget Management approved 20,000 new teaching positions for School Year 2025 to 2026.
In a press statement, the agency said the move was aligned with President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s directive to strengthen the country's education system by ensuring that every learner has access to a qualified teacher.
The positions—Teacher I, Special Needs Education Teacher (SNET), and Special Science Teacher I—will be distributed to all regions based on school directories, enrollment data, and validated teacher shortages.
The biggest allocations are headed to Region IV-A with 2,655 items, followed by Region III with 2,152 and Region VII with 1,774.

The announcement comes as DepEd records major progress in teacher deployment. From August 2024 to April 2025, the number of unfilled teaching positions nationwide dropped from 72,964 to 38,862. The national filling rate has risen to 96.03%—up from 94.78% in 2022.
To ensure faster deployment, Notices of Organization, Staffing, and Classification Action (NOSCAs) are now being sent directly by DBM Regional Offices to Schools Division Offices (SDOs) for Kindergarten, Elementary, and Senior High School positions, and to Implementing Units (IUs) for Junior High School positions.
Appointments will be made quickly based on existing Comparative Assessment Result – Registry of Qualified Applicants (CAR-RQA).

The 20,000 newly approved positions are part of a broader education reform push under Angara's leadership.
These reforms include raising the annual teaching allowance to P10,000, streamlining workloads and paperwork, and expanding promotion opportunities through the new Career Progression System.
With the deployment of new teachers already underway, DepEd expects a stronger presence of educators in classrooms across the country, improved delivery of education, and a more equitable learning environment in the coming school year. –NB, GMA Integrated News

‘Undoubtedly Chinese': Manila court voids Alice Guo's mayorship

In a 67-page quo warranto decision, Judge Liwliwa S. Hidalgo-Bucu of the Manila RTC Branch 34 stated that Guo Hua Ping and Alice Guo are one and the same person. During a Senate inquiry, Senator Risa Hontiveros revealed that the National Bureau of Investigation found that Guo Hua Ping and Alice Guo have the same fingerprints, but their relation with one another was denied by the dismissed Bamban mayor's legal counsel. Respondent Guo Hua Ping is undoubtedly a Chinese citizen, born to Chinese parents, namely Guo Jian Zhong and Lin Wenyi. She and her parents are holders of Chinese passports,' the decision read. It further explained that Guo's Philippine passport is not considered a 'conclusive proof of citizenship,' just like her birth certificate. 'The Certificate of Live Birth of Alice Leal Guo contains dubious entries, which are not supported by concrete and credible evidence,' the decision read. Guo's arrest came after she faced several accusations, including having a fake identity, being a Chinese spy and being involved in a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) syndicate. She claimed she was a Filipino citizen and denied her involvement in illegal POGO operations. With the court's decision on Guo's citizenship, it not only concluded that she is disqualified to hold the position as Bamban mayor but is also prevented from running for the said position in the first place. 'Guo is nothing more but a usurper of the Office of the Mayor of Bamban, Tarlac. The fact that she won the election and has already assumed office is of no moment as it did not cure her disqualification of lack of Philippine citizenship,' the decision read. 'Her disqualification was already existing at the time of the filing of her Certificate of Candidacy. It follows, therefore, that her proclamation was deemed void,' it added. 2 OFWs in Iran from Central Visayas seek repatriation
Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Iran from Central Visayas sought assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to be repatriated because of the impact of the Israel-Iran tension. The OFWs are from Cebu and Siquijor. Siquijor is still under the jurisdiction of OWWA 7 since the agency has no regional office yet in the newly created Negros Island Region (NIR). It was learned from Christina Marie Vistal, officer from OWWA, that the families of the two OFWs filed the repatriation request. While OWWA is glad of the reported ceasefire, it informs the public that Alert Level 3 has not been lifted yet, which means that no OFW will be allowed to leave the Philippines to work in countries affected by the conflict. It was learned that on June 24, 2025, at least 35 OFWs from Israel were repatriated, but none of them are from Central Visayas. Six OFWs from Iran arrive safely in PH
Six overseas Filipino workers (OFW) repatriated from Iran amid its conflict with Israel arrived safely in the Philippines on Saturday morning, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said. The OFWs — five who worked as shrimp hatchery technicians in Iran and one domestic worker from Dubai who accompanied her employer to Iran as a tourist — arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, and DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi welcomed the OFWs. The repatriated workers were also met by the MIA Medical Team as well as a social welfare officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The OFWs boarded an Emirates flight to Manila. "The repatriation was made possible through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Ambassador Roberto Manalo, in close coordination with the DMW and OWWA," the DMW said. The repatriated OFWs were given financial assistance by the DMW, OWWA, and DSWD. The MIA Medical Team also provided them with food and medical services. The OWWA will give the OFWs temporary hotel accommodations and domestic flights back to their home provinces. The DMW said two more OFWs from Iran are expected to arrive on Saturday night. "This group marks the first batch of Filipinos repatriated from Iran following the June 13 Israel-Iran conflict," the DMW said. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked government offices to take the necessary steps to ensure the safe and orderly return of Filipino workers who wish to avail themselves of voluntary repatriation. In a statement, Marcos said the government is already processing over 200 requests for repatriation and ''we are moving quickly to bring them home while others have opted to remain at work.'' ''I urge our fellow Filipinos to coordinate with our embassies in Tel Aviv and in Tehran. Please follow their guidance, inform them of your situation, and do not hesitate to ask for assistance,'' Marcos said. The Philippine government raised crisis alert level 3 in Israel and Iran on June 20, urging Filipinos in the area to avail of voluntary repatriation. Crisis level 3 or voluntary repatriation phase is imposed by the Philippine government on countries with deteriorating security conditions. At least 30,000 workers, mostly caregivers, are in Israel, and more than 1,000 are in Iran. Tensions heightened between Israel and Iran on June 13 after Israel struck nuclear and military targets Tehran with missiles. According to an Israeli military official, Iran had enough material to make 15 nuclear bombs within days. Iran retaliated, then both countries traded missile attacks. The US also bombed Iran nuclear sites on June 21, and Iran thereafter fired missiles at an American base in Qatar on June 23.
