Spinners do the damage as Sri Lanka inflict record collapse

Colombo, July 2 (UNI) Spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis combined for seven wickets as Sri Lanka inflicted a record collapse on Bangladesh on their way to an impressive 77-run victory in the opening ODI of their series here. The pair were in fine form as Bangladesh lost seven wickets for just five runs on their way to being dismissed for just 167 in reply to Sri Lanka's total of 244, with the hosts claiming victory in the series opener. Bangladesh were seemingly cruising to victory at 100/1 in the 17th over with Tanzid Hasan (67) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (23) at the crease, but went on to lose seven wickets in quick succession to fall to 105/8 in the 21st over and hand the home side the advantage. It was the fewest amount of runs added between the fall of the second wicket and the eighth wicket in men's ODI history, while it was the second-worst seven-wicket collapse in men's 50-over cricket behind the 7/3 Zimbabwe lost against Sri Lanka in Harare in 2008. Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed - who was the final wicket of the collapse to fall when he was trapped LBW by Mendis to become his third victim - was at a loss to explain why the team's batters succumbed to Sri Lanka after such a positive start. "It reminds me that in cricket, there is uncertainty. I wasn't expecting that. I was chilling in the dressing room with a coffee, and suddenly, five wickets down. Hopefully, we will come back stronger in the next game, and everyone will learn from the mistakes," Taskin said post-match. "After that great start, we were a bit relaxed. Everything was going our way, and suddenly, that run-out and one of our set batters, Tamim, got out. Then we panicked a bit. We didn't play our natural game, and under pressure, we collapsed. Stats-wise, this is a very low-scoring ground, especially if you bat second, and there is a high chance you lose the game. Still, this game was in our hands, and we could have done a bit better." Earlier, skipper Charith Asalanka did the damage for Sri Lanka with a composed innings of 106 from 123 deliveries to help the hosts post a decent total. Asalanka hit six fours and four sixes during his knock and was adjudged Player of the Match for his heroics with the bat. "I wanted to play according to the situation. We were disappointed with the way we finished in the last 10 overs. We knew we were a few runs short but the fielding was amazing today," Asalanka said after the match. "We emphasise a lot on fielding. We believe catches win matches and it was there to be seen today. We have done well in ODIs in the last 12 months having beaten Australia and India. "We are ranked fourth in the world and we want to address a few shortcomings and finish this series strong." The second match of the three-game series is in Colombo on Saturday. UNI RKM

Smith set to return in the Grenada Test

St. George's(Greneda), July 3, (UNI) Australia batsman Steve Smith has recovered from his finger injury an will return to the side's playing XI for the second Test against the West indies in Grenada. Skipper Pat Cummins revealed the return of Smith less than 24 hours out from the clash at the National Cricket Stadium, with Josh Inglis the player to make way for the Australian veteran. Smith batted without pain while wearing a splint on Tuesday and Cummins said there was no reason to leave the 36-year-old out of the playing XI. "He's ready to go, the finger held up well," Cummins said of Smith. "He was really happy, particularly batting. "Fielding we still potentially need to manage it a little bit, so he might not be in the slips too often – maybe for spin he'll be OK, but (for the) quicks he might need to wait another week. "So you might see him running around a bit more … probably some variation of mid-off and fine leg, (but) we'll see if he lasts a few days down at fine leg, I reckon he'll be itching to get up in the circle pretty quick." The return of Smith is the only change to the Australian team that defeated the West Indies by 159 runs in the opening Test of the series, while the Caribbean side confirmed they will wait until the toss before locking in their final XI. The West Indies are deciding whether to include an extra seamer in their line-up, with left-armer Anderson Phillip a chance to play make his third Test appearance in Grenada in place of spinner and vice-captain Jomel Warrican. One player certain to feature for the West Indies in the clash is experienced opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who will become just the 10th player from the Caribbean side to make 100 Test appearances. Brathwaite has been a mainstay in the West Indies' red-ball setup since he made his Test debut back in 2011 and skipper Roston Chase paid tribute to the longevity of the 32-year-old. "It's an amazing feat, he's the third Bajan player to do it so that's tremendous in itself," Chase said. "The last guy to do it (for West Indies) was Chris Gayle in 2014, so it says a lot for Kraigg. "He's a modern-day legend and someone I look up to – I've played with him from under-11s. "He stated before starting his career that he wanted to play 100 Tests so that's an amazing achievement that someone can set a goal from so early and achieve it after so many years." Australia XI for second Test: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood West Indies squad: Roston Chase (c), Jomel Warrican (vc), Kevlon Anderson, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Mikyle Louis, Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales UNI RKM

Wimbledon: Fritz survives 109-game grind to reach third round

Wimbledon, July 3 (UNI) Fifth seed Taylor Fritz displayed remarkable resilience and stamina today as he battled past Canadian Gabriel Diallo in a five-set thriller to reach the third round of Wimbledon 2025. In a match that lasted three hours and six minutes, Fritz prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3- his second consecutive five-set win in as many days. Having played a total of 109 games over his first two rounds, Fritz now holds the third-highest number of games played through the opening two rounds of Wimbledon since 2022. Fritz, who recently won his fourth title at Eastbourne, was coming off another exhausting five-set win over France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, whose thunderous serves- including the fastest in tournament history- tested the American's defences. That match was interrupted due to the 11 p.m. curfew on June 30 and concluded on July 1, adding to the physical and mental strain Fritz has shouldered in recent days. Facing Diallo, Fritz suffered a cut on his elbow after diving for a forehand in the fourth set, requiring a medical timeout. Yet, he pushed through the pain to clinch the deciding set and record his first win over Diallo on the Lexus ATP Head2Head. Across the two marathon matches, Fritz has faced 63 aces- 37 from Mpetshi Perricard and 26 from Diallo- and has hit 56 aces of his own, underlining his fierce competitiveness and adaptability on grass. The American will now get a well-deserved rest day before facing the winner of the suspended second-round match between 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. The Spaniard was leading 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 5-5 when play was halted due to darkness. Fritz's run is being closely followed by ATP Tour premier partner Emirates and platinum partner Infosys, who continue their support for tennis excellence and global fan engagement through technology and innovation.
