
IBM Promises Enterprise-Ready Quantum Computing By 2029
IBM announced plans for its IBM Quantum Starling, a fault-tolerant quantum computer, that brings quantum computing a step closer in a market that has long promised revolutionary capabilities while delivering laboratory curiosities. Starling is a significant shift from experimental technology towards enterprise-ready infrastructure.
The world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer, expected by 2029, will finally bridge the gap between quantum potential and business reality.
Today's most pressing business challenges push classical computing to its limits. Drug discovery timelines span decades, supply chain optimization extends across global networks, and financial risk modeling must navigate volatile markets.
McKinsey estimates that quantum computing could create $1.3 trillion in value by 2035, yet current quantum systems remain too error-prone for meaningful business applications.
The challenge is that existing quantum computers can only execute a few thousand operations before errors accumulate and corrupt results, making them unsuitable for many of the most complex algorithms that drive real business value.
This reliability gap has kept large-scale quantum computing mostly in research labs rather than corporate data centers.
IBM Quantum Starling addresses this fundamental limitation through error correction at an unprecedented scale. The system will operate 200 logical qubits while executing 100 million operations with accuracy.
These logical qubits are quantum computing units protected against errors through sophisticated encoding across multiple physical components. According to IBM, this represents a 20,000-fold improvement over current quantum computers in operational capability.
The business value lies in Starling's modular architecture, which is designed like an enterprise data center rather than an experimental prototype. The system will connect approximately 20 quantum modules within IBM's Poughkeepsie facility, creating a scalable infrastructure that enterprises can access through cloud services. This approach transforms quantum computing from a specialized research tool into a utility that integrates with existing enterprise workflows.
Starling's real-time error correction, based on a state-of-the-art error correction called 'the gross code,' uses the Relay-BP decoder to ensure computational accuracy throughout complex operations. This reliability enables the development of long, sophisticated algorithms required for practical business applications, ranging from pharmaceutical molecular modeling to financial portfolio optimization.
IBM's approach fundamentally differs from competitors through its focus on resource efficiency rather than raw qubit count. Competitive systems that use the surface code require about 2,000 physical qubits to create approximately 12 logical qubits.
In comparison, IBM, using its quantum low-density parity check code, only requires about 200 physical qubits to enable 12 logical qubits. This means that IBM's qLDPC code is approximately 10X more efficient, and there are several codes within the qLDPC family of codes
Google and other competitors continue pursuing surface code approaches that, while technically sound, requires a significant resource overhead for practical business applications.
IBM's modular design provides another competitive advantage: incremental scalability. Rather than rebuilding entire systems to increase capacity, enterprises can leverage additional capacity in IBM quantum computing services as their computational needs evolve.
The company's long track record of meeting its public quantum roadmap commitments demonstrates an execution capability that its venture-funded startups and research-focused competitors have yet to match. It's this steady execution of its quantum strategy that keeps the company in a leadership position within the quantum computing field.
It's early days for quantum computing and the competitive landscape remains fractured. Startups like QuEra and PsiQuantum pursue different technical approaches but lack IBM's enterprise relationships and infrastructure capabilities. Google and Amazon possess the resources to compete, but they have not committed to IBM's aggressive commercialization timeline or its enterprise-focused architecture.
IBM's existing enterprise relationships across pharmaceutical, financial, and manufacturing sectors provide immediate market access that competitors cannot replicate quickly. The company's cloud infrastructure and enterprise sales organization also offer distribution advantages that pure-play quantum startups lack entirely.
'Quantum advantage' is the ability for quantum computer to compute faster, more efficiently ore more accurately than classical computing alone.
IBM's 2026 timeline for quantum advantage positions the company to capture early adopter revenue while competitors remain in development phases. The three-year lead time between quantum advantage and Starling's full deployment provides a competitive moat that will be difficult for competitors to breach.
IBM's roadmap extends beyond Starling to Blue Jay, a 2,000-logical-qubit system capable of billions of operations. This progression is a clear demonstration of the company's commitment to quantum computing as a long-term business strategy rather than a research initiative.

The quantum computing market is at an inflection point. IBM's Starling system will transform quantum computing from an expensive research curiosity into enterprise infrastructure that delivers measurable business value. This requires IBM to execute, but the company has built credibility by hitting every public milestone its put on its quantum roadmap.
For executives evaluating quantum computing strategies, the question has shifted from whether quantum computing will impact their industries to how quickly they can integrate quantum capabilities into competitive advantage. Tesla implements Grok AI chatbot into vehicles
(KRON) — Tesla owners are used to updating their vehicle's software every few weeks or so. Updates are usually minor and don't generally alter the overall driving experience. However, this latest update might just be a different story. Grok, an artificial intelligence system developed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is now available to use with the latest software update, according to emails sent to Tesla owners Monday. Tesla posted a demo video on X of what the Grok integration would look like with the user voice command. Tesla announced on social media Saturday that it would roll out the Grok tool for its vehicles in the United States. The automaker said vehicle owners do not need a Grok subscription to enable the chatbot inside the car. However, not every Tesla owner will be able to have Grok available to them. The AI chatbot will be available to vehicles delivered on or after July 12 or meet the following criteria, according to Tesla. The federal agency's contact with the AI chatbot is worth $200 million. The DOD also awarded competitors, such as OpenAI and Google, a similar contract. Grok is a Musk-backed artificial intelligence tool that is widely seen on his social media app X. Grok's X account has more than 5 million followers. 'Grok is your AI companion, an advanced artificial intelligence built by xAI and now, is available in Tesla vehicles,' Tesla said on its website. 'Grok is designed to deliver accurate and insightful responses to questions of a wide range.' Netflix, 3M, Schlumberger are part of Zacks Earnings Preview
Chicago, IL – July 14, 2025 – releases the list of companies likely to issue earnings surprises. This week's list includes Netflix NFLX, 3M MMM, Schlumberger SLB. The Q2 earnings season gets going in earnest this week, with almost 100 companies on deck to report results, including 38 S&P 500 members. This week's reporting docket is dominated by the big banks, but we have several bellwethers from other sectors also reporting, like Netflix, 3M, Schlumberger and others. Regular readers of our earnings commentary are familiar with the significant negative estimate revisions trend that we experienced over the last few months. We saw this in estimates for 2025 Q2 as well as for the second half of the year. For 2025 Q2, the expectation is for earnings growth of +4.7% relative to the same period last year on +4% higher revenues. This will be a material deceleration from the growth trend of recent quarters and will be the lowest earnings growth pace since the +4.3% growth rate in 2023 Q3. As we have been consistently flagging, earnings estimates took a renewed hit at the start of Q2, following the early April tariff announcement. This was particularly notable for Q2, but estimates for the following periods also got trimmed. While the revisions trend has notably stabilized in recent weeks, the magnitude of cuts to 2025 Q2 estimates is bigger and more widespread relative to what we have become used to seeing in the post-COVID period. Since the start of April, Q2 estimates have declined for 14 of the 16 Zacks sectors (Aerospace and Utilities are the only sectors whose estimates have gone up), with the biggest cuts to Autos, Energy, Transportation, Basic Materials, and Construction sectors. Estimates for the Tech and Finance sectors, the largest earnings contributors to the S&P 500 index, accounting for more than 50% of all index earnings, have also been cut since the quarter got underway. But as we have been pointing out in recent weeks, the revisions trend for the Tech sector has notably stabilized in recent weeks. We see this same trend at play in annual Tech sector estimates as well. While the tariff uncertainty is far from resolved, the market appears to have learnt to look past it. There is no question that elevated tariffs are a net negative for the economy as well as corporate profitability. But the consensus thought process appears to be that the worst of the issue is behind us, and the final tariff shape will be a lot less problematic than many had factored in at first. What this means for the Q2 earnings season is that expectations are likely too low, setting us up for actual results to be significantly better than expected. We may not get a lot of actual guidance from management teams, given the many unresolved macro questions. But we remain confident that management teams' qualitative commentary on business trends will be largely positive. All in all, the setup for the Q2 earnings season looks very favorable to us. In terms of S&P 500 index 'EPS', these growth rates approximate to $254.07 for 2025 and $287.36 for 2026. A big contributing factor to the negative revisions trend has been the Energy sector, whose estimates have been steadily coming down for a while now. The Energy sector's earnings are currently expected to be down -13.3% in 2025. Excluding the Energy sector, total S&P 500 earnings in 2025 are expected to be up +8.3%. While many in the market will tune in to the Q2 earnings season this week, the reporting cycle has actually been underway already. Through Friday, July 11th, we have seen quarterly results from 21 S&P 500 members already. Total earnings for these 21 index members that have reported results are up +1.3% from the same period last year on +5.8% revenue gains, with 76.2% of the companies beating EPS estimates and 81% of them beating revenue estimates. We are not drawing any conclusions from these results, given how small the sample is at this stage. As noted at the top, the reporting cycle ramps up this week, with 38 index members reporting results. Most of the big banks and brokers are on deck to report results this week, as are bellwethers from other sectors like Netflix, 3M, Schlumberger, and others. Netflix shares have been standout performers lately, with the stock up +39.7% this year, handily outperforming the S&P 500 index's +7% year-to-date gain. The stock was up big following each of the last three quarterly releases, so expectations remain high coming into this release. Schlumberger, the oilfield services leader, is dealing with a downbeat market sentiment. The stock is down -1.2% this year, compared to Halliburton's -13.8% decline and the broader market's +6.9% gain. It is all about the outlook for oilfield activity levels, which in turn is a function of oil prices. In the luxury segment, we already know that BMW is crushing Audi; the former sold twice as many cars as its rival in the first six months. But what about Mercedes-Benz? We've had to wait a bit longer for Mercedes to post sales, but now it has. While it is performing much better than Audi, Mercedes sales are down in the United States relative to last year, and it's some way off of BMW's numbers. Let's take a closer the USA alone, Mercedes has sold 142,000 cars in the first half of the year, a drop of 6% year-on-year. By comparison, BMW sold 178,499 units and saw a 1.6% increase in sales over the same period. Audi is in a distant third spot, notching up 81,951 units, a drop of 12%. BMW, therefore, is the only one of the three that has been able to grow this year. In terms of van sales in the USA, Mercedes has sold 15,700 of those so far in 2025, a massive 42% drop. "Overall, we see good customer demand in the U.S. and Germany for our products including our Top-End vehicles, despite tariffs impacting our global sales in the second quarter,' said Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes Benz Group AG. The brand only provides broader insights and sales figures, so a direct comparison with its rivals is tricky. The manufacturer pointed out that demand for its top-end models was strong, but did not go into more detail about how much each model sold. This segment includes models like the Mercedes-Maybach S, S-Class, EQS, G-Class, EQS SUV, and high-performance Mercedes-AMG models. Competing models from BMW, such as the 7 Series and X7, are both up in sales in 2025. Mercedes' top-selling car globally is still the GLC, while its stylish new CLE is selling strongly globally, too. Plug-in hybrid sales were up 34% globally in Q2, and in Europe, the share of electrified models hit 40%. Still, Mercedes is 36,499 models adrift of BMW in the first six months in the USA, and at this rate, it's unlikely to steal the luxury crown back from BMW.
