Pahang plans high-tech zone to attract AI and tech investments
State Investment, Industrial development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman, Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib, said the initiative aims to draw investments from technology firms to the east coast region.
'The Pahang High-Tech Zone will be developed in the Kuantan area. Should there be any changes to the location, we will make an official announcement. We also aim to attract talent in the AI sector to be part of the ecosystem and support the growth of startup companies we are nurturing in Pahang,' he added.
He said this to reporters after launching the AI for Productivity Transformation and officiating the closing ceremony of the Speed GCPV (Grid-Connected Photovoltaic) programme at the Pahang Skills Development Centre here today.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Nizar expressed hope that Pahang Skills and the Pahang Foundation would collaborate to attract companies and fresh talent in the field of AI to the state.
'We in Pahang must be well-prepared to face both the opportunities and challenges that AI will bring. The state government will also explore potential incentives to encourage more AI companies to establish operations here, rather than limiting their presence to the Klang Valley or other states.
He added that the state government is also exploring the development of floating solar farms, or floating photovoltaics (FPV), as part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
He said the proposed solar farm would be built on a suitable lake or dam site, with the project expected to take two years to complete.
'We need to produce more skilled and knowledgeable technicians in the solar energy sector, both in Pahang and across Malaysia. So far, 288 participants have been trained in this field through the Speed GCPV programme,' he added.

Rocket launch site: Ministry conducting preliminary study on Sabah, Pahang proposals
SERI ISKANDAR: The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry is conducting a preliminary feasibility study on proposals from Sabah and Pahang to identify suitable locations in the two states for the development of a rocket launch site. Its minister Chang Lih Kang said the study would take some time as it requires evaluation from multiple angles. "So far, two states have expressed interest and submitted their applications - Sabah and Pahang. We are currently conducting a feasibility study on their proposals. "There are many aspects that we need to examine in this feasibility study. So, it will take time," he said when met after the fifth edition of the MOSTI Tech Talks programme at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) here Monday (June 30) night. Also present were the ministry's deputy secretary-general (science planning and culture) Ruziah Shafei, deputy secretary-general (technology development) Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan, UTP president and chief executive officer Mohamed Firouz Asnan, and UTP provost Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib. Chang said he hoped that construction work for the rocket launch site could begin as early as 2026. "... In fact, demand for satellite launches is increasing, and the number of existing launch sites worldwide is no longer sufficient. "In the past, satellites were mainly needed for communication and television, but now many sectors including automotive, smartwatches and smartphones rely on satellite technology for GPS, communications and more," he said. On Feb 15 last year, the media reported that Malaysia was racing against time in its bid to establish the first rocket launch site in Southeast Asia. Chang was quoted as saying that Malaysia has several advantages in building such a facility, including being located outside earthquake zones, having no active volcanoes, possessing advanced technological capabilities and hosting a well-developed electronics and electrical industry. Meanwhile, on the MOSTI Tech Talks programme, Chang said it is part of the ministry's efforts to engage university students so that they better understand the ministry's roles and functions. "At the same time, we want them (university students) to be more aware of current developments in the science community, and hopefully be inspired to pursue careers in science and technology," he said. Chang added that the programme began in April and has so far involved Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). - Bernama

Malaysia targets 10,000 startups under ASEAN Platform by year-end
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is targeting to onboard at least 10,000 startups by the end of this year under the newly launched Startup ASEAN platform. The platform serves as a regional digital gateway to connect and empower startups, investors and talents across Southeast Asia. Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Chang Lih Kang, said the platform currently hosts about 5,000 startups and is showing encouraging progress since becoming fully operational. 'We are targeting at least 10,000 startups by year-end, and we have already reached around half of that. 'This shows promising development, and we hope the platform will help the entire region to grow together. The benefits are not limited to a single country but extend to all ASEAN member states,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the platform here today. Malaysia, as the ASEAN chair in 2025, is spearheading the initiative through MOSTI, with implementation by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd. The platform was developed in collaboration with all 10 ASEAN member states. In his speech at the launch, Chang said the Startup ASEAN platform reflects Malaysia's commitment to lead with purpose, adding that it represents the first major deliverable under the ASEAN Startup Initiative. 'As chair of ASEAN in 2025, Malaysia has taken on a bold responsibility to shape a future-oriented startup ecosystem. Through this initiative, we are proud to introduce the ASEAN Technology Startup Ignite 2025,' he said. Chang noted that Southeast Asia is home to more than 680 million people, with over half of the population aged below 35. The region has a combined gross domestic product of more than US$3.9 trillion, while its digital economy is projected to exceed US$1 trillion by 2030 (US$1=RM4.233). The platform's launch today marks the second phase of a longer regional roadmap. The first phase, completed in 2024, focused on developing the platform and engaging stakeholders. The third phase, expected in 2026, will see the establishment of the ASEAN Centre of Excellence for early-stage startups to further elevate the region's innovation ecosystem. Asked how MOSTI will ensure inclusivity for startups in less developed ASEAN member states, Chang said the platform was designed to be borderless and accessible to all. 'This regional platform is one of the ways we can assist startups from less developed countries. As long as you have internet access, you can come on board. Your company can be seen by investors and talent from anywhere in the region. This is how we help increase their visibility and chances of success,' he said. Tracking Impact and Regional Collaboration Cradle group chief executive officer Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke said the platform comes with clear performance indicators, including startup participation, investment outcomes, and regional collaboration. 'In 2025, we aim to onboard 10,000 startups, 2,000 investors and 500 strategic partners. We are also planning to run five regional programmes through the platform. These efforts will support an ecosystem valued at around US$131.2 billion,' he said. Vanhaecke said the platform is not just a database but a regional tool for inclusive impact. 'We will track the number of investments, the emergence of new startups, and collaborations between founders from different countries. Two regional programmes are already in place through our dialogue partners from Korea and China. These are open to all startups across ASEAN,' he said. Vanhaecke said three more regional programmes will be introduced this year, with more to follow in the future. 'This is just the beginning. With strong participation from ASEAN countries, the platform has the potential to become a key enabler for innovation, growth and cross-border cooperation,' he said.
