Mercedes-Benz Says Trump Is Holding It Back

Mercedes-Benz Says Trump Is Holding It Back

Gizmodo2 days ago
Mercedes-Benz has long been a bellwether of elite consumption. Its luxury vehicles aren't just status symbols. They're economic signals, revealing how the world's wealthy are spending. So when Mercedes releases its quarterly sales data, it's worth paying attention.
The German carmaker released its second-quarter sales figures on July 8, and they paint a picture that is both reassuring and deeply cautious. The data shows Mercedes-Benz is selling its most expensive cars at a blistering pace in America. Demand for its top-end vehicles, including the AMG lineup and the iconic G-Class, is up 26 percent year-over-year. Globally, its push into electrification is gaining traction, with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales jumping 34 percent in the last quarter alone.
And yet, on a global scale, Mercedes-Benz is shrinking.
Globally, the company reported a 9 percent decline in sales for the second quarter of 2025. That drop is not due to a lack of interest, far from it. Mercedes blamed 'new global tariff policies' for its decision to slow deliveries and keep dealer inventories low, particularly in the U.S. and China. It's a clear reference to President Donald Trump, now in his second term, who has returned to using tariffs as a central tool of industrial policy. Mercedes and other German automakers have once again been caught in the crossfire of global trade tensions.
'We see good customer demand in the U.S. and Germany for our products, including our top-end vehicles, despite tariffs impacting our global sales in the second quarter,' said Mathias Geisen, a member of Mercedes-Benz Group's board. Translation: the customers are there, but the cars are stuck in the geopolitical pipeline.
Between April and June, Mercedes sold 453,700 vehicles worldwide. That figure could have been much higher if not for trade restrictions. Instead, the company is playing defense: slowing shipments, trimming dealer stock, and rerouting global logistics to avoid punitive tariffs. The one bright spot? The U.S. market.
America has become Mercedes-Benz's second-largest market globally, and its sales performance there shows no signs of slowing. Top-end vehicles made up more than 14 percent of total Q2 sales. AMG deliveries rose 19 percent. G-Class sales exploded by 56 percent.
Mercedes-Benz USA recently invested in a flagship Manhattan dealership and appointed a new CEO, Adam Chamberlain, who sounded an optimistic note: 'We'll unlock the potential of this important market,' he said, emphasizing partnerships with dealers and a new focus on plug-in hybrids.
But the gains in America are being offset by struggles in China.
Though Mercedes claims it retained its crown as China's top luxury brand, the company described the market as 'highly competitive,' a coded acknowledgment of its ongoing price war with Tesla and local giants like BYD. Beijing's aggressive 'Buy Chinese' policies have further squeezed imported brands like Mercedes, shrinking their foothold.
EV performance was a mixed bag. Mercedes said xEVs—battery-electric and plug-in hybrids—made up 21 percent of global sales and 40 percent in Europe. But the company didn't break out battery-only EVs in its release, a likely sign that fully electric adoption is lagging behind expectations.
There are some glimmers of hope. The new CLA, an all-electric sedan, was well received in Europe. And Mercedes teased the arrival of an electric GLC model, part of what it calls 'the biggest series of car launches' in company history, planned for the second half of 2025.
Still, Q2 paints a picture of an automaker navigating uncertainty. Even as demand grows and new models hit the streets, Mercedes is pulling back for political ones. Trump's protectionist policies are forcing foreign carmakers to rethink not only how they sell, but where, when, and even whether to deliver at all.
Mercedes-Benz just confirmed what many feared: politics now drives the global auto business.

Freaked-Out Trump Pleads for End to MAGA's Epstein Civil War

President Donald Trump has responded to the growing tensions inside his administration surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein files with a lengthy rant on Truth Social, backing Attorney General Pam Bondi and demanding MAGA move on. In a Saturday afternoon post, the president wrote, 'What's going on with my 'boys' and, in some cases, 'gals?' They're all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We're on one Team, MAGA, and I don't like what's happening. We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and 'selfish people' are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.' Pam Bondi has been a particular focus for MAGA since the memo was released last week, targeted by those who believe Bondi is part of a deep-state cover-up involving Jeffrey Epstein's client list and his death by suicide. In his post, Trump attempted to pin the Epstein files drama on his predecessors, writing, 'For years, it's Epstein, over and over again. Why are we giving publicity to Files written by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration, who conned the World with the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, 51 'Intelligence' Agents, 'THE LAPTOP FROM HELL,' and more? They created the Epstein Files, just like they created the FAKE Hillary Clinton/Christopher Steele Dossier that they used on me, and now my so-called 'friends' are playing right into their hands. Why didn't these Radical Left Lunatics release the Epstein Files?' 'If there was ANYTHING in there that could have hurt the MAGA Movement, why didn't they use it?' Trump continued. 'They haven't even given up on the John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King, Jr. Files. No matter how much success we have had, securing the Border, deporting Criminals, fixing the Economy, Energy Dominance, a Safer World where Iran will not have Nuclear Weapons, it's never enough for some people. We are about to achieve more in 6 months than any other Administration has achieved in over 100 years, and we have so much more to do. We are saving our Country and, MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, which will continue to be our complete PRIORITY.' The latest civil war within the Trump administration broke out after the Justice Department and the FBI announced earlier this week that they had found no evidence to suggest convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was in possession of a list of powerful clients or was murdered in jail. Epstein's death by suicide in August 2019 has become the subject of several conspiracy theories in the intervening years. Among those who previously pushed Epstein conspiracy theories was current FBI director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, who raised his theories on his podcast. Both changed their tune once they entered the Trump administration. Trump also backed Patel in his Truth Social rant Saturday, claiming his FBI director needed to focus on other topics. 'The Left is imploding!' Trump wrote. 'Kash Patel, and the FBI, must be focused on investigating Voter Fraud, Political Corruption, ActBlue, The Rigged and Stolen Election of 2020, and arresting Thugs and Criminals, instead of spending month after month looking at nothing but the same old, Radical Left inspired Documents on Jeffrey Epstein.' Bongino clashed with Bondi over Epstein this week and sparked rumors he was resigning from his role after not showing up to work on Friday. Bongino was reportedly frustrated that Bondi had overpromised but underdelivered on the contents of the Epstein files after previously boasting of being in possession of Epstein's supposed 'client list.' There has also been speculation that Patel is angling for Bondi to be removed from her position, and has himself threatened to quit if Bongino is forced out in favor of Bondi. In a post made to X on Saturday, Patel denied the rumors, writing, 'The conspiracy theories just aren't true, never have been. It's an honor to serve the President of the United States @realDonaldTrump — and I'll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me.' Trump raged on Truth Social Saturday, 'LET PAM BONDI DO HER JOB — SHE'S GREAT! The 2020 Election was Rigged and Stolen, and they tried to do the same thing in 2024 — That's what she is looking into as AG, and much more. One year ago our Country was DEAD, now it's the 'HOTTEST' Country anywhere in the World. Let's keep it that way, and not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.' He concluded: 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Trump had previously promised during his campaign that he would 'release the Epstein files,' appealing to his many supporters who have for years traded conspiracy theories about the potential powerful names found on Epstein's client lists. The administration's failure to do so has resulted in harsh rebukes from previously vocal supporters such as podcaster Andrew Schulz, who called Trump out for 'doing the exact opposite' of what he'd promised, telling his Instagram followers, 'I voted for none of this.'

Elon Breaks Silence on Trump's Epstein File Demand to MAGA

Elon Musk has added his voice to the chorus of conservatives calling on President Donald Trump to release the Epstein files 'as promised,' hours after the president pleaded with MAGA to end its civil war. In response to Trump's Truth Social post on Saturday calling for his supporters to stop targeting Attorney General Pam Bondi, Musk tweeted, 'He said 'Epstein' half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein.' The 54-year-old billionaire added, 'Just release the files as promised.' In response to another post about Trump's call for unity, Musk wrote, 'What the hell kind of system are we living in if thousands of kids were abused, the government has videos of the abusers and yet none of the abusers are even facing charges!?' 'This is a very big deal,' Musk added. Earlier this week, the Department of Justice and the FBI announced that there was no secret list of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein's clients, and that, despite untold conspiracy theories to the contrary, Epstein died by suicide in jail and was not murdered. The announcement triggered a civil war among Trump's base, with reports indicating that FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino wanted more information on Epstein released, but were overruled. Many other prominent conservatives criticized the decision, with podcasters, commentators, former Trump officials and celebrities all calling for Trump to fulfil his election promise to release the Epstein files. Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon joined in, insisting that Bondi should demand all files relating to Epstein be unsealed and all documents released to the public. On Tuesday, Musk made the explosive claim that Bannon was named in the Epstein files in response to a post from long-time Trump adviser Roger Stone that asked, 'Why would Bannon meet with Jeffrey Epstein both at his New York home and in Paris after Epstein was convicted on sex crimes in Florida? Why would he coach Epstein for his 60 minutes appearance?' Musk doubled down on that claim on Saturday, tweeting, 'Back to prison for Bannon. He's in the Epstein files.' Bannon spent four months in prison in 2024 after being convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the January 6 House select committee. Musk had previously tweeted claims that Trump himself was in the Epstein files as part of a series of attacks against his former ally. One tweet from Musk read, 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' In a follow-up post, he added, 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.' Musk later deleted the posts and apologized, tweeting, 'I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.'
