Not Ishan Kishan, Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper N Jagadeesan gets India call-up as Rishabh Pant's cover against England

In a major development, India have called up Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan as a cover for injured Rishabh Pant for the remainder of the Test series against England. Pant suffered a toe fracture on the opening day of the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester after he was hit on his right foot by a Chris Waokes delivery. The Indian vice-captain, who was grimacing in pain, retired hurt for 37 and was immediately taken for scans. Following Pant's injury, media reports stated Ishan Kishan is likely to be added in the squad as cover. However, a recent TOI report stated Kishan, who played for India A against England Lions, suffered an ankle injury and won't be available. 'Jagadeesan got a call in the afternoon from the BCCI, informing him about his selection in the Indian team for the Test tour of England. He is simply waiting for his visa at this point of time. All other formalities have been cleared,' a source was quoted as saying by the media outlet. "Jagadeesan was very happy following his selection in the squad. However, he is simply going through his normal routine at this point of time. Jagadeesan came for his regular practice session after getting the news update and went through the drills," the source added. Meanwhile, Pant came out to bat hobbling on Day 2 after he was cleared to take the field by the BCCI medical team. "Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. 'Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,' BCCI posted on X. He came out to bat after the fall of Shardul Thakur. It is highly unlikely that Pant will play in the fifth and final Test at The Oval with Jurel replacing him.

India To Benefit From Rishabh Pant's Injury? Ex-Captain Claims 'It Can Ignite...'

Last Updated: Alastair Cook thinks Rishabh Pant's foot injury might inspire India and make England complacent. Former England captain Alastair Cook believes that India might have some positives to take from Rishabh Pant's unfortunate foot injury. In an interview during the second day's play at Old Trafford, Cook said Pant's injury can 'ignite' the visitors and make the hosts a bit too relaxed as well. Pant got hit on the toe by Chris Woakes' yorker on the first day. His foot swelled up and was oozing blood as the physios stretchered him out of the ground. Scans revealed a fifth metatarsal fracture and he has been advised six weeks of rest, which will sideline him from keeping wickets in this Test and entirely from the next. 'England will have a little smile on their face because you know, they've taken out one of India's best batsmen on this tour," Cook told BBC. 'It's the nature of the beast of cricket that you sometimes can get a bit of luck. Sometimes, when you've lost one of your best players, everyone's thinking, well, it's 10 against 11. Actually, it's a bit more of a free shot. Sometimes that's a pressure off. It's a well, imagine if we win this game now, when everyone's saying, well, we can't win without Pant." 'So that's not bad. They've still got 250 runs on the board. They still can get over 350 and 400 on the seat, and then they've got a fully fit bowling attack. So I do think you miss bowlers more than you miss a batter. He's also got 40 odd as well. So he's made some contribution. So let's not just say it's not, it's not over. England can't (just) it could, you know, really ignite this Indian side," he added. To the surprise of many, Pant was cleared to bat in the Test despite the fracture. He came out limping when India went down six wickets in the first innings. At the time of writing, he had gone past his half-century, too, scoring over 15 runs with the fractured foot. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 18:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rishabh Pant back in the middle as India reach 321/6 at lunch

Manchester, July 24 (UNI) India added 57 runs to their overnight score on a rain-hit second morning to reach 321 for 6 at lunch in the Old Trafford Test against England today with Rishabh Pant batting on 39 after returning to the crease post a brief injury scare. Giviing Pant company in the middle is Washington Sundar on 20. Starting the day at 264/4, India lost Ravindra Jadeja early when he edged Jofra Archer to Brook at second slip for 20. Archer, bowling with discipline and venom despite a modest pace, continued troubling Indian batsmen with movement off the seam. Shardul Thakur, resuming on 19, stood tall under pressure. He counter-punched the English attack with a gritty 41 off 88 balls, including five boundaries. A dramatic sequence unfolded in the 11th over of the day when England lost a review after believing Thakur gloved a rising delivery to the keeper, only for replays to show it clipped his shoulder. Unfazed, Thakur responded with a boundary the very next ball. However, in the 102nd over, Thakur fell to Ben Stokes, edging an outswinger to Ben Duckett at gully, who took a superb low catch. Thakur's dismissal left India at 314/6, but the attention quickly turned to the return of Rishabh Pant, who had retired hurt yesterday after reaching 37. He walked back to the middle amidst applause, partnering Sundar through to lunch. The Indian innings was briefly interrupted by rain just ahead of the lunch interval. Earlier in the session, England had taken the second new ball at the start of play (83.1 overs), but the bowlers failed to make full use of the fresh cherry as India crossed the 300-run mark. With Pant batting and Sundar providing solid support, India will hope to stretch the total further into the second session. UNI BDN SSP
