Explained: The changes coming to Fantasy Premier League 2025-26
From recognising defensive contributions to introducing elite global leagues and a second set of chips, FPL managers have a lot to take in before Gameweek 1. Here's a breakdown of all the major updates coming your way this season.
Points for defensive contributions
Defensive players finally get their due in FPL. New for 2025/26, players will now earn fantasy points for standout defensive efforts.
Defenders will earn two points if they make 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions, and tackles in a single game.
Midfielders and Forwards must reach 12 defensive actions, which also include ball recoveries, to earn the same reward.
This change especially benefits centre-backs and defensive midfielders, making them more viable Fantasy assets than ever before.
Two Sets of Chips
Strategy just got deeper. For the first time in FPL history, managers will receive two full sets of chips in a season:
Wildcard
Free Hit
Triple Captain
Bench Boost
Each set is usable in its respective half of the campaign, giving managers a total of eight chips over the season. However, chips from the first half must be used before Gameweek 19. They will not roll over into the second half.
There's no Assistant Manager chip this season, so chip usage becomes even more crucial to FPL success.
New leagues for top managers
Two new exclusive leagues are launching this year:
Top 1% in Global League
Top 10% in Global League
These are invite-only competitions for high-performing managers from last season. It adds an elite layer of competition and gives top-tier players something more to aim for beyond mini-leagues and overall ranks.
New rule for assists
FPL is simplifying how fantasy assists are awarded. While the core idea remains - crediting the final pass before a goal - the new rules are more transparent and remove much of the subjectivity.
That's a significant tweak that could alter point distribution over a campaign.
Extra transfers due to AFCON
The 2025/26 season coincides with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and FPL is preparing managers with a helpful adjustment: In Gameweek 16, your free transfers will be topped up to a maximum of five, helping you manage players who may depart early for international duty.
This smart change acknowledges real-world scheduling impacts and helps avoid unnecessary hits for affected squads.
Custom team badges
A fun new feature for creative managers: with the Premier League's partnership with Adobe, FPL players can now design their own custom team badges using Adobe Express and Firefly AI tools.
It's a purely cosmetic update, but one that adds personality and flair to your team identity.
More chances to earn Bonus Points
Bonus points remain critical in separating similarly performing players during tight matchups. For 2025/26, the system has been refined to reward:
Goalkeeper saves
Goalline clearances
Penalty goals
Successful tackles
This could increase the frequency and variety of bonus point winners, shifting how managers view certain undervalued players.

The trends to know to dominate your fantasy football drafts
In the first of a six-part fantasy football draft preview series, Fantasy Insanity discusses general draft strategy. Next week: tight ends. You know what's better than making a birdie? Making a bunch of birdies. Anything beat watching a couple of episodes of your favorite show? Binging a whole season. Certainly there is nothing better than drafting a handful of fantasy teams. Except drafting dozens of fantasy teams! More is often better. Maybe, perhaps, greed is good? Consider the Fantasy Madman a card-carrying, flag-waving member of Gang Greed, at least when it comes to fantasy football. Yes, we prefer to draft a bunch of teams, but more importantly, this season we expanded of database of fantasy stats to create an even better Draft Value Quotient (DVQ). And a deeper dive gave us clearer insights into some trends, be it coaching, age and beyond. Nico Collins during training camp. Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Movin' on up Whether it's coaching tendencies, depth chart uncertainty or age, three players are higher on our board than they are on most others. With Tank Dell expected to miss all of this season after his devastating knee injury last year, and Stefon Diggs now playing for the Patriots, top Texans WR Nico Collins gets a usage bump, and it shows in the rankings. Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. had a great rookie season, and our formula expects him to rise even higher under a new coach in Year 2. Same with the Chargers' Ladd McConkey. Our model prefers younger RBs, and Bucky Irving is one of the biggest beneficiaries, with expectations for him to take a larger share of the Buccaneers' backfield workload. Fantasy Football DVQ: The only draft rankings you need The latest incarnation of the Fantasy Madman's football rating system has arrived. The nuts and bolts have been tweaked and strengthened, the breadth of the database was expanded, some ingredients were added to the soup, and some that were souring the stew were removed. So we're leaner and more flavorful. Now allow us to serve you the latest helping of the Draft Value Quotient (DVQ). The DVQ is a system that rates players across the board, balancing value based on positional depth. A player's DVQ rating represents the point in the draft where projected production meets draft value. Each draft slot is assigned a value for expected production, which descends at a constant rate (same amount of expected points substracted from each descending pick). However, a player's real-world production forms an arc (steep fall at top, then flattening out), therefore there are gaps in the ratings. Example: The top player might have a 1.0 DVQ, but the second-ranked player might have a DVQ of 13.3. Deeper in the draft pool, instead of big gaps, players will only be separated by percentage points. So saddle up, study up, then queue up a draft, and take a ride with the DVQ. Pass the test Compared to seasons past, quarterbacks are higher — particularly running QBs. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts all rate in the top 40. For traditional pocket passers, only Joe Burrow does. Bear in mind, injuries/games played has higher impact than in the past, and a lot of the top running QBs haven't missed significant time of late, so we feel like there is a correction coming at some point, but our math loves these guys this season. Old & grumpy The trend for older, high-mileage or oft-injured RBs is exactly what you would expect, and the projections reflect that. Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey and Joe Mixon are projected to have falloffs. Jalen Hurts is ranked high in DVQ. AP Top story The first few picks of the draft are normally the easiest, and this season is no exception. Ja'Marr Chase should be No. 1. After that, you can't go wrong with Bijan Robinson, Justin Jefferson or Jahmyr Gibbs. But remember that thing about oft-injured RBs? Well, that is why Saquon Barkley is not in our top five.

Liverpool's solution to Mo Salah's AFCON problem is obvious
How will Salah be replaced when he's at AFCON? Another problem that will be at the forefront of Arne Slot's mind right now is how will Mohamed Salah be covered when he meets up with Egypt in December and January for the African Cup of Nations? Federico Chiesa's future is directly part of this, since the Italian plays on the right-wing but rarely gets minutes since he's constantly in competition with Salah and often sidelined with an injury. In Frimpong, Liverpool have a potential solution, since the Dutchman played at right wing-back for Leverkusen, meaning he is used to playing a forward role. Last season he had 14 goal contributions. But it's plausible that more options could be required and Liverpool have already spent heavily. So how else could this problem be solved? One way is to keep Harvey Elliott this summer and give him a more extensive role in the team by not over-playing Salah and managing his minutes. The Egyptian has cemented his place in the team, having delivered elite attacking numbers over the last eight seasons, but he is now 33 years old and eventually you would expect him to slow down. His 57 goal contributions last season tell a different story, but it was the best campaign of his career and the likelihood of how delivering similar numbers is particularly low, but I guess we'll have to see. Nonetheless, approaches for Elliott have so far fallen short of his market value and the Englishman is still very much 'reviewing his situation'. Keeping him in the team is still a very likely situation. If that were to happen, then for most of the season, Liverpool would have Stefan Bajcetic, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wirtz, alongside Elliott as their midfield options - a particularly stacked squadron to be choosing from. And as mentioned earlier, he would help Frimpong to carry the burden of covering Salah when AFCON rolls around. A successful campaign would simultaneously raise his market value, allowing the club to take even higher offers for him when next summer arrives. If you're still not convinced, then the homegrown quota might be worth looking at. Elliott ticks that box for us at the very least. So perhaps consider such a state of affairs in the next few weeks because our two-time U21 Euros winner is worth a pretty penny and selling him for less than he's worth would be poor business.
