In his Facebook post on Monday, Cassim says he's the 'messiah sent to save humanity from climate change and usher in an era of world peace.'

In 2012, Cassim held a news conference before going on a cross-country bicycle ride to raise awareness for global warming.

His Facebook profile says he was employed from 2008 to 2010 by now-defunct KD Air, a small airline based on Vancouver Island.

The airline's former owners, Diana and Lars Banke, said in an interview that Cassim was one of the smartest and best pilots they ever worked with, calling him a fast learner who was highly intelligent.

But Lars Banke said Cassim left the airline after getting 'bored' and then went to medical school. He also said Cassim believed the world was coming to an end.

Diana Banke said she was 'very surprised' to hear of Cassim's charges, saying he was quite young when he worked for them and was 'like a kid.'

'Something would (have to) be going on that's not normal,' Lars Banke said. 'He was, I would say, a caring person.'

Diana Banke said she remembered Cassim 'doing a really long bicycle trek,' and that he brought a dog along with him.

Lars Banke said he recalled that Cassim was somewhat interested in environmentalism, but he was unaware of any kind of religious beliefs.

'He never spoke religion with us,' Diana Banke said.

Cassim's online posts include musings on religion, climate science, and advocacy for tolerance and peace, including a claim 'the Angel Gabriel appeared before me and gave me a message from Allah.'

Man charged with attempted stabbing in Bridgewater, N.S.
A man has been charged following an attempted stabbing on High Street in Bridgewater, N.S., on Saturday night. Bridgewater Police Services responded to a call around 10:40 p.m. on Saturday night to reports of a male attempting to stab another male, a news release said. Police say no injuries were sustained due to the reported incident. Police later located and arrested a male matching a description given to police in a room at the Bridgewater Motel. The weapon was also found in the room after police executed a search warrant. Shots fired into front door of Whitby home: Durham police

Police say officers were called to a home in the area of Maria and Annes streets, near Dundas Street West, just after 7 a.m., after the homeowners found bullet holes in their front door. The residents were home at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured. Police say officers found a number of shell casings on the scene, but no suspect description for the shooter was provided. Investigators are asking anyone with information or video or dashcam footage from the area of Gilbert Street West and Newman Crescent, and Annes to Frances streets, between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m., to contact them at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1847, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Windsor man arrested in human trafficking investigation
A Windsor man has been arrested and charged following a human trafficking investigation. In May 2025, police received information about a victim being trafficked through online advertisements. Under the Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence-led Joint Forces Strategy (IJFS), the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Anti-Human Trafficking Unit began an investigation and identified an additional victim. As a result of the investigation, on July 16, IJFS members from the OPP, and members of the London Police Service's Tactical Support Services, Hamilton Police Service, Kingston Police, Ottawa Police Service, Peel Regional Police, and Toronto Police Service arrested and charged Jarett Phillips, 30, of Windsor. He faces with the following Criminal Code offences: Communicate with anyone for the purpose of obtaining sexual services Procuring (recruit, hold, conceal, or harbour or exercise control, direction or influence) - three counts The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa on Monday, July 21.
