IIM Sambalpur launches NEP-based B.Sc programmes in Data Science and public policy, admissions via JEE Main and CUET 2025
The institute said, 'The Bachelor of Science in Management and Public Policy programme is designed to meet national managerial aspirations in terms of Sustainability, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and community-led development. The cross-functional courses are designed to develop responsible leaders who can address intricate societal and industrial challenges with innovation, compassion, and a global perspective'.
The event also witnessed a roundtable discussion around the theme, 'Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as Engines of Innovation for Global Enterprises'. Bramhanand Jha, PMP, Vice President, National eGovernance Division under MeitY, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Government of India, attended the occasion as the chief guest. While Lt. Col. Piyush Shukla, Director (JEE), National Testing Agency (NTA) and Rajesh Kumar, Director (CUET), National Testing Agency (NTA) were present as the keynote speakers, who came together to discuss the evolving role of GCCs as crucial hubs driving innovation and global digital transformation and contributed valuable insights on the future of global enterprises and the strategic role of GCCs.
Mr. Jha said, 'India's Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are no longer low-cost arbitrage centres; they are becoming strategic innovation hubs for value for global business. With the economy shifting towards a digital-first economy, GCCs are leading the way in developing agile, technology-enabled, and future-proof organisations.'
Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur, said, 'In line with India's National Education Policy, (NEP 2020) our vision is to create responsible leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset. These undergraduate programmes have a flexible structure that allows students to gain a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a degree after three years, and an honors degree after completing four years, with multiple entry and exit points. The first is the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, a four-year program. The admissions will be to this program through an entrance test held by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This program will shortlist students who have obtained a minimum of 70% marks in their Class 10 and Class 12 board exams, together with top percentile or high marks in the JEE (Main) test. We are admitting 90 students to this program in phase one.'
'This is for those who want to enter the bureaucracy, or the Indian Administrative Services (IAS). There isn't an undergraduate-level programme in India today that specifically prepares an individual for such a career. We feel that some of the best minds who are targeting a career in the civil services must be given foundation-level training through a formal B.Sc. programme. This programme will enable students to make an informed decision right at the start of their academic career and give them the right mindset and skillset to enter the government.' he added.
IIM Sambalpur will offer admissions to its B.S. in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme through IIT JEE Main, and to its B.S. in Management and Public Policy programme through CUET, both national-level entrance exams conducted by the National Testing Agency. Admissions for the B.S. programmes will begin in June 2025. Classes for the first batch will commence from September 2025.

‘Not prepared for fourth year': DU's push for 12-hour shifts at colleges sparks criticism
Amid the rollout of the fourth year undergraduate programme (FYUP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from this academic session at Delhi University, the varsity's push for 12-hour shifts has drawn criticism from teachers and students. Expressing myriad concerns, faculty unions are demanding the university withdraw the advisory and hold wider consultations as the classes for the new session begin Monday. In a notification dated July 31 notification, the university asked colleges to extend their hours and operate from 8 am to 8 pm to 'ensure availability of faculty and staff during the period,' suggesting a staggered deployment to accommodate additional academic requirements. However, faculty representatives argue that this blanket approach ignores the realities on the ground. 'The order clearly shows that we are ill-prepared for the fourth year,' said Abha Dev Habib, Secretary of the Democratic Teachers' Front and Associate Professor at Miranda House. She added, 'Teaching distribution and timetables must be planned in advance during the vacation itself if classes are to begin smoothly. Pushing this on August 1, with classes beginning August 4, leaves teachers scrambling. It also means that first-year teaching is now pushed toward guest faculty, which is no way to welcome students to a university.' Safety is emerging as the biggest worry. Many DU campuses are located in areas where traveling at odd hours feels unsafe to students and staff. 'This latest DU notification is extremely problematic. It is extremely dangerous from the safety perspective of students and teachers in many areas of Delhi,' said Dr Mithuraaj Dhusiya, an elected member of DU's Executive Council. 'Making students sit from 8 am to 8 pm is neither feasible nor practical. It just shows that DU is not prepared for the fourth year of NEP — neither on infrastructure nor manpower.' Rudrashish Chakraborty, Associate Professor of English at Kirori Mal College and Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Executive member, called the measure 'anti-teacher and anti-student.' 'It forces colleges to adopt a draconian system. The notification expressly instructs colleges to prepare a staggered timetable of a minimum five hours per day for every teacher, even if there is no space for teachers to sit and work,' he said. Chakraborty also flagged the potential impact on evening colleges, which traditionally cater to students who work during the day. 'It is not clear how this will impact evening colleges. Are they going to schedule their classes from 8 pm to 8 am? Or are they going to be dismantled altogether as institutions?' Faculty members also warned of an emerging hierarchy under the new system. 'The university has said that only senior faculty should teach and supervise the fourth-year students. This is a vicious attempt to create a division between so-called senior and junior colleagues, which will undermine collegiality and disrupt teaching culture,' Chakraborty added. 'We cannot implement structural reforms like this through last-minute orders without preparation, safety measures, or teacher training,' said Habib. Although the strength of students was not as high on Friday when colleges held orientations, better attendance is expected on Monday, officials said.

Hiring growth in India: Global tech firms ramps up recruitment, domestic majors slow down; AI, cloud drive demand shift, say experts

The collective employee base of the FAAMNG group- Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google- grew by 16 per cent in India over the past 12 months, adding more than 28,000 net new jobs, according to staffing firm Xpheno, cited by Economic Times. Their total headcount in the country now exceeds 208,000. This growth surpasses the 15 per cent expansion reported till August 2024 and comes at a time when these firms have announced nearly 100,000 job cuts globally, largely concentrated in the US and Europe. 'Even in a tough global environment, India remains a critical hub for talent, particularly in areas like AI and cloud,' said Kamal Karanth, cofounder of Xpheno. 'The hiring trend shows resilience, and AI is emerging as a key driver shaping recruitment patterns.' Over 4,500 positions across FAAMNG's Indian operations remain open, reflecting sustained demand for specialised tech roles. "We intend to scale over 5,00,000 people in the coming financial year, in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and anything that the industry might need.
