Twin meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids, are expected to peak simultaneously today.
Here are all the events that will take place today.
Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha
The Upper House of the Parliament, Rajya Sabha, is set to hold a special debate on Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The debate was agreed upon by both the government and the opposition.
The session will follow a similar marathon discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 28) and aims to examine national security, intelligence, and diplomatic implications. The government is expected to face intense scrutiny from the Opposition benches, who are likely to demand a detailed explanation of the operation's objectives, its precise geographical scope, the forces involved, and, crucially, the outcomes and any potential implications for regional stability.
IMF to publish report on world economy
The International Monetary Fund is set to release its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) update, providing a comprehensive analysis of the global economic situation, offering revised growth forecasts, inflation projections, and assessments of key economic risks and opportunities for countries worldwide.

The July update is particularly crucial as it follows a period of significant global economic uncertainty. Analysts and policymakers will be closely scrutinising the report for the IMF's revised GDP growth forecasts, especially given persistent inflation concerns, varying monetary policy stances across major economies, and ongoing geopolitical tensions. The update will likely detail how these factors are impacting different regions and highlight potential divergences in economic performance.
German Chancellor to meet Jordan's King Abdullah II
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to meet Jordan's King Abdullah II today during a visit to Berlin. The discussions between Chancellor Merz and King Abdullah II are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation across various sectors, including economic partnerships, development aid, and security collaboration.
A significant portion of the talks will undoubtedly be dedicated to recent developments in West Asia, particularly the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader humanitarian situation. Both leaders have previously emphasised the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, and a political solution based on the two-state solution. King Abdullah II has been a prominent voice on these issues, and Merz recently urged Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to provide aid to 'starving' civilians in Gaza.

The four-day exercise, which runs until August 1, aims to significantly strengthen coordination and response mechanisms for major disaster scenarios, specifically during large-scale earthquakes and industrial chemical hazards. The drill is structured in phases, moving from strategic planning to on-ground action.
Twin meteor showers to light up skies
Two meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids, are expected to peak simultaneously today across the Northern Hemisphere.
The Southern Delta Aquariids are typically active from mid-July to mid-August, reaching their peak around late July. They originate from the debris left by Comet 96P/Machholz. Under ideal conditions, this shower can produce up to 20 meteors per hour. Sharing the sky, the Alpha Capricornids are a smaller, but often more dramatic, shower. Active from early July to mid-August, they peak around the same time as the Southern Delta Aquariids. This shower is notable for producing bright fireballs, even if their hourly rate is lower.

Hamas armed wing releases video of Israeli-German hostage held in Gaza
The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas has released a new video showing an Israeli-German man taken hostage during the October 2023 attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. The six-minute video, shared on Thursday, features the hostage, identified as Rom Braslavski, speaking in Hebrew and calling on the Israeli government to help secure his release. He is also shown watching Arabic-language television reports on the worsening food crisis in Gaza. AFP and several Israeli outlets identified the man as Braslavski, a dual national from Jerusalem. He had been working as a security agent at the Nova music festival, one of the sites attacked during the October assault. At the start of the footage, Hamas's armed wing claims it has lost contact with Braslavski, repeating a statement it made last week. This suggests the video may have been recorded earlier. A previous video of Braslavski was released on 16 April. Witnesses say that before being abducted, he helped rescue several festival attendees during the attack. According to the Israeli military, 251 people were taken hostage during the October 2023 raid into southern Israel. Of those, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27 believed to be dead. Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza following the attack. A temporary ceasefire earlier this year, from January 19 to March 17, led to the release of 33 hostages eight of whom were dead in exchange for the release of around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners. Braslavski's video was released by a group designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.

Centre Brings 73 Major Railway Stations Under Special Action Plan To Handle Festive Rush
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday informed the Parliament that it has been decided to create permanent waiting areas outside 73 railway stations across the country, which periodically face heavy crowds as part of the action plan to handle the rush of passengers during the festive season. These major stations facing rush situations will have a Station Director, empowered to take "on-the-spot decongesting decisions" like restricting sale of tickets as per capacity and availability of trains during the festive rush, the minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. The crowd build-up will be controlled within the waiting area. Passengers will be allowed to go to the platforms only when their trains arrive at the platform. This will decongest the platforms, he said. The pilot projects have started at New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad stations, he said. The action plan is based on the experience gained from the use of these measures to handle the passenger rush at stations such as Surat, Udhna, Patna and New Delhi in 2024. Similar arrangements were made during the Mahakumbh at nine stations in the Prayagraj area. Based on the experience at these stations, it has been decided to ensure complete access control at the 73 identified stations. Passengers with confirmed reserve tickets will be given direct access to the platforms, while passengers without a ticket or with a waiting list ticket will wait in the outside waiting area. All unauthorised entry points will be sealed, the minister said. He also said that two new designs of 12 metres wide (40 feet) and 6 metres wide (20 feet) standard FOB have been developed. These wide FOBs with ramps were very effective in crowd management during the Mahakumbh. These new standard wide FOBs will be installed in all the stations. Besides, cameras helped crowd management in a big way during the Mahakumbh. CCTV cameras at Railway stations and adjoining areas will aid close monitoring and management of the crowd at railway stations, the minister said. War rooms will also be developed at large stations, in which officers of all departments will work during crowd situations. The latest digital communication equipment, like walkie-talkies, announcement systems, and calling systems, will be installed on all heavy crowd stations. The minister further stated that all staff and service personnel will be given a new design ID card so that only authorised persons can enter the station. All staff members will also be given new design uniforms so that they can be easily identified during a crisis situation. All major stations will have a senior officer as Station Director. All other departments will report to the Station Director, who will get financial empowerment so that he can take on-the-spot decisions for improving the station, the minister said. Besides, coordination with other stakeholders such as GRP/State Police has been stepped up, and Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff are deployed at sensitive locations to regulate the crowd smoothly during the heavy rush period and render real-time assistance to passengers, the minister added.

"Baseless": Deve Gowda Slams Trump Over "Dead Economy" Remark On India
Bengaluru: Taking a strong objection to the statement of US President Donald Trump's 'dead economy' remark on India, former Prime Minister and JD-S Rajya Sabha member H.D. Deve Gowda said that "even a small trader and a poor farmer in India, who conducts his business with great dignity, integrity and humanity, can teach many lessons to Mr. Trump". In a statement on Friday, the former Prime Minister said: "Like everybody else, I too have been surprised by US President Mr. Donald Trump's baseless and ill-tempered remarks on India and the Indian economy. I don't think modern history has seen another head of state who has been so volatile, uncivil and irresponsible. "Mr. Trump has not just behaved badly with India, but with every other country across the world. He has not spared his own longstanding allies. There is something fundamentally wrong with him which reason, diplomacy or statecraft cannot diagnose and address. It may not be correct to say anything more than this on his ill-tempered nature because it would mean lowering our own standards. Even a small trader and a poor farmer in India, who conducts his business with great dignity, integrity and humanity, can teach many lessons to Mr. Trump," Deve Gowda emphasised. "India is a sovereign nation that is diverse and democratic. Ever since Independence, it has always acted in supreme national interest. It has the God-given ability and strength to negotiate all difficulties that come its way and emerge stronger," he noted. "I am very happy and proud that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not compromised our national interest. It has not blinked to Mr. Trump's bullying and has shown that it will never be dictated by threat. On the contrary, the Narendra Modi government has gone the full length to protect the Indian agricultural sector as well as small and medium businesses, on which more than half the nation's population is dependent. The firm stand that the Narendra Modi government has taken will lead to a national resurgence of an unprecedented scale," Deve Gowda stated. The former Prime Minister further said that India has been the fastest growing economy. Mr. Trump must either be blind or ill-informed to designate our economy as 'dead'. "A word of caution to some Opposition leaders who have rejoiced the statements of Mr. Trump and have jumped to be his deluded spokespersons in India. I can understand their frustration but they should not harm themselves, and their parties, and end up very soon in the dustbin of history along side Mr. Trump," Deve Gowda said.
