Dr Elsie praises Golden Fireballs defenders after perfect run continues in Telkom Netball League
Telkom Netball League Division 1 leaders the Golden Fireballs kept up their prefect start to the competition when Power Week 3 tipped off at the Durban ICC on Monday.
The Gauteng team coached by Dr Elsje Jordaan, assisted by Proteas legend Bongi Msomi, thumped the Eastern Cape Aloes 64-40.
The teams were neck and neck early in the first quarter as they traded goals with the score tied at 13-all.
But the Fireballs pulled away in the second quarter and led 28-22 at half-time.
Sharp shooter
Star goal shooter Owethu "Sammy" Ngubane was at the heart of all that was good about the Gauteng team's play, with a number of intercepts in midcourt disrupting the Aloes' play.
She was also clinical with her shooting in the goal circle with goal shooter Nomfundo Mngomezulu struggling to find her rhythm. She would later leave the court after picking up an injury.
It was no surprise that Ngubane was later named Player of the Match.
Seven unanswered points at the beginning of the third quarter by the Fireballs seemed to suck the life out of the visibly tiring Aloes. The match seemed over as a contest with a full quarter to go and the score 52-34.
The fireballs rang the changes in the final quarter as they cruised to the 64-40 win in their opening match of the third round.
"We're quite happy with the result. Our first pool game wasn't that great. I didn't think we were as clinical in attack as we should have been, and we should have made sure to convert more of our turnover ball," coach Jordaan told Independent Media after the match. "I thought there was really a great defensive effort by our defenders."

Aseza Hele's brace not enough to foil Black Ferns XV as Bok Women fall short at Athlone
Springbok No 8 Aseza Hele was hugely impressive for the home team by scoring two tries against the Black Ferns XV at Athlone Stadium on Saturday. Picture: Henk Kruger Independent Media Image: Henk Kruger Independent Media SPRINGBOK Women No 8 Aseza Hele powered over for a brace of tries, but it was not enough to deny the Black Ferns XV a 36-24 victory in the historic clash at Athlone Stadium on Saturday. A strong home crowd came out in support of the Boks in the first-ever contest against their Antipodean rivals on South African soil. It was a clash of styles from the outset with the New Zealanders' trademark high-tempo attacking running game up against the forward-dominated Boks. The visitors ran in six tries to the Boks' four, with the opener coming after just two minutes through fullback Mererangi Paulto, to sound an ominous warning. But to the Boks' credit, they played with plenty of spirit and endeavour, with hard-running Hele hugely impressive. The dreadlocked blonde backrower made plenty of metres every time she had the ball under her arm, pulling in a host of Black Ferns XV defenders to bring her down each time. Black Ferns XV centre Hollyrae Mete-Renata dives for a try in her team's victory over the Springbok Women at Athlone Stadium on Saurday. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ The visitors failed to do so in the 20th minute, when after the Bok forwards had steamrolled the Black Ferns XV at scrum time to win a heal-against-the-head, the home side managed to set up a maul for Hele to power over for the first of her two tries. Unfortunately, the Boks' discipline let them down at crucial moments with lock Vainah Ubisi and centre Eloise Webb being sent to the bin for infringements. The Black Ferns utilised the numerical advantage to full effect with winger Jaymie Kolose intercepting a loose pass to run in for an easy five-pointer before hat-trick hero and Player of the Match Kelsey Teneti dotted down for her first try. Hele, though, struck back for the Boks after another strong maul with her second try to reduce the deficit to just three points. Webb's yellow card, though, saw the Boks' rush defence disorganised with the Black Ferns XV able to exploit the extra space out wide with Teneti scored her second try of the half to allow the visitors to take a 20-12 lead into the halftime break. The Boks would have hoped to rebound after the interval, but it was the Black Ferns XV that blitzed the home side with a double strike through centre pairing Hollyrae Mete-Renata and Teneti that put the visitors out of sight. To Swys de Bruin's team credit, they never rolled over with the Boks lifting their intensity after Nadine Roos moved to scrumhalf for the remainder of the match. Roos' livewire presence at the base of the scrum put the marauding Boks forwards on the front foot, as she popped up the ball for the front rankers to punch holes in the Black Ferns XV defence. The home side were rewarded for their efforts with captain Babala Letsha and Nombuyekezo Mdliki barging their way over - much to the delight of the rousing home support. The Boks and the Black Ferns XV will go head-to-head again next weekend at the same venue in the second and final match of the series. Scorers: Springbok Women 26 (12) – Tries: Aseza Hele (2), Babalwa Latsha, Nombuyekezo Mdliki. Conversions: Jakkie Cilliers (3). Black Ferns XV 34 (20) – Tries: Mererangi Paul, Kelsey Teneti (3), Jaymie Kolose, Hollyrae Mete Renata. Conversions: Hannah King (2).

Sammy Ngubane continues to rewrite netball history after Fireballs' TNL tile heroics
Olwethu Ngubane of the Fireballs shoots for goal as Martine Jordaan of the Flames defends during their Telkom Netball League clash. Ngubane was named TNL 2025 best shooter as the Fireballs went on to lift the trophy. Image: BackpagePix It has been a remarkable few months for Golden Fireballs, University of Johannesburg and Proteas goal attack Owethu 'Sammy' Ngubane. Fresh from helping guide UJ to a first USSA Netball Championships title in years, she was able to repeat the feat in the Telkom Netball League with the Fireballs. The latter triumph was achieved in remarkable fashion as the Fireballs won every match in a gruelling run of three power weeks that took them from Sun City in North West to Durban for finals week. Catching fire The weather on the KZN coast didn't always play ball, but the Fireballs ensured there would be no drop in temperature on the court. Near misses in the previous two seasons were relegated to distant memories as they buried defending champions the Free State Crinums with a stunning come-from-behind 47-40 victory at a rocking Durban ICC. The 21-year-old Sammy was central to that victory, masterminded by former Proteas coach Dr Elsje Jordaan, who was ably assisted by former Proteas and Fireballs skipper Bongi Msomi. 'First of all, it was so exciting to actually play a final this year because we had missed out in two years now – since 2022,' Ngubane told Independent Media Sport exclusively in the week after their famous win. 'We were so happy that we ended up getting what we wanted to get as a team and that our goals were ticked. 'It is kind of special, winning the title undefeated, but actually it's so much pressure on us to keep the standard going and not lose a match.' The Golden Fireballs celebrate after being crowned 2025 TNL champions with their victory over the Crinums at the Durban ICC on Sunday afternoon. Image: Netball South Africa Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Shooting star The goal attack was a colossus, stepping up in the tense moments of Power Week 3 when her team needed her, driving them forward with key intercepts, feeds, link-up plays and goals … plenty of them. She was lethal with her shooting in the attacking circle, often hauling her team back in contests when they seemed to have hit a brick wall. It was no surprise when Ngubane was named best shooter of TNL 2025. 'Coach Elsje and coach Bongi played a huge role in my improvement for this year, playing a huge role by helping me adjust some of my skills on the court,' Sammy said. 'It wasn't good start to the year for me and coming into TNL my mindset changed and I wanted something that could boost my confidence. 'I think one the things that I have been working on myself is my shooting and I can see the improvement. From this TNL tournament, I can say I'm truly confident and ready for anything that comes my way.' Home is where heart is She was also able to feed off the crowd in the pulsating grande finale, who proved that they still have plenty of love for a former favourite daughter who made her name in KZN netball. 'I did represent KZN way back when I was young, in 2021, I think, when I was still in matric,' Sammy said. 'Obviously I made the big move to Joburg to study there and play for UJ, and also represent Gauteng. But there were a lot of things that were happening in the background in terms of do I still want to stay in KZN or do I want to change sides and go to Golden Fireballs. I think that was one of the biggest decisions that I have taken. 'But coming back home to play on home soil, it was truly a great thing to have our families see us play, but just truly letting them know that even if we changed provinces, our hearts are still at home.' Three-peat? With two titles already in the bag, Sammy is gearing up for more glory in the Varsity Cup with UJ, where she will once again team up with coach Msomi. She admits that their USSA performance, where they defied recent history of falling before the final hurdle for years, had only increased the size of the target on their backs. 'I think everyone will be gunning to play the final and get gold. I think it's huge pressure on us, obviously, after playing USSA and getting gold. Now going to Varsity Cup every one of us will have a target on our backs. 'But we are also prepared for everything that they're going to bring to us. We also focused on ourselves, on building our team and building our squad as well, so we're quite excited about it.' While it's unlikely to be a focus for Sammy, there is a chance of a rare three-peat. Given what has happened so far this fairytale season, anything is possible.

Bok Women's World Cup preparations boosted by Vainah Ubisi comeback for Black Ferns clash
Towering lock Vainah Ubisi returns to the Bok Women fold for her first appearance in green and gold this year as the team prepare to face the Black Ferns XV with the Rugby World Cup a month away. The Springbok Women take on the Black Ferns XV on Saturday at Athlone Stadium with an eye on their World Cup preparation. The Women's Rugby World Cup — which will take place in England — is less than a month away and the Springbok Women have been handed the timely return of star lock, 22-year-old Vainah Ubisi. Ubisi missed a large chunk of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury she suffered last year, and was then operated on at the start of the year. Her appearance against the Black Ferns XV — the second New Zealand side — will be her first in the Green and Gold this year as she lines up alongside Anathi Qolo in the second row in a much-changed Bok Women side from the one that took on Canada across the start of July. Qolo and Ubisi replace regular captain Nolusindiso Booi and Danelle Lochner who started against Canada in Gqeberha. The 22-year-old tighthead lock was a breakout star for the Women's Boks last year, collecting four Player of the Match awards in 2024, being crowned the MyPlayers Women's Players' Player of the Year award as well as being nominated for South African Women's Player of the Year, beaten by Nadine Roos. 'It's been a big boost having Vainah back,' Springbok assistant coach Franzel September said on Thursday. 'I'm quite excited for her.' The thought of representing South Africa at the World Cup is what kept the rampaging lock going throughout her extended rehabilitation process, with the sole thought floating around her head being the quadrennial tournament. 'When I got injured last year that's what was in my mind — if I'm going to make it to the World Cup squad, if I'm going to be back in time,' Ubisi said at the pre-match press conference on Thursday. 'I did my rehab in Stellenbosch, so while I was there, the team coming in and me being around the team, I think that actually eased me a little bit. It was not easy being alone, doing rehab alone. It was tough. But I'm just grateful that I'm back and I was able to be back in time.' Rotating squad The locks aren't the only change with Swys de Bruin and his coaching team deciding to test out and continue their pattern of trying out new combinations despite South Africa's opening World Cup match, against Brazil, being exactly one month away. 'It's building for the World Cup,' September explained as the reason for the chopping and changing in the squad. 'Canada, Africa Cup, now Black Ferns, it's all part of World Cup preparation. 'We're trying some new combinations or some different combinations as we did in the Canada Test matches.' Those changes in combinations have been made with the halfbacks as well, with Tayla Kinsey and Libbie Janse van Rensburg starting at nine and 10. Roos and Eloise Webb played those positions in the second match against Canada but have been shifted to their more regular positions of fullback and outside centre, respectively. Tighthead prop Babalwa Latsha will captain the side as one of only six players to wear the same starting jersey as they did against Canada in Gqeberha. 'We wanted to make sure that everyone in the assembled group gets game time, while we also have the luxury of another match next weekend, where those with niggles can get a run as well,' said De Bruin. Captain Booi, Lochner, Sizophila Solontsi, Byrhandré Dolf and Ayanda Malinga are all recovering from niggles following the Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. 'We have made good strides this far and we are improving,' De Bruin said. 'The Black Ferns XV will be tough opponents, but that is why we wanted them here. 'We don't play against the top sides enough, so like we were against Canada, we will be tested in numerous areas of the game. The coaching staff are keen to see how this group of players respond to the challenges that the New Zealand side will bring.' DM The match starts at 5pm on Saturday at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
