Limiting CM's tenure to 2 terms among GRS manifesto: Armizan

By: Bernama Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is committed to limiting the Chief Minister's tenure in office to two consecutive terms as one of the key reforms in the party's manifesto for the upcoming Sabah state election. GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the proposal was approved in the Sabah Cabinet Meeting in December 2023 and is currently in the process of drafting a Bill.
Advertisement To implement this, Armizan explained that it requires an amendment to the State Constitution which requires the approval of two-thirds of the assembly members, hence GRS needs a landslide victory of more than a two-thirds majority in the upcoming state election to ensure this endeavour can be realised. "The measure to limit the term of office is important to guarantee leadership renewal and avoid prolonged concentration of power. GRS believes this is among the most progressive political reforms in Sabah," he said in a statement today. Armizan, who is also the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, said GRS had proven to be a pioneer in this reform when it earlier voiced its commitment to limit the term of the Chief Minister ahead of the Sabah state election. Armizan said the GRS manifesto would be based on four main thrusts, namely Sabah First, Sabah Forward, Sabah Prosper and Sabah United, which reflected the coalition's commitment to strengthening state development, ensuring the well-being of the people and strengthening governance with integrity. PM ensures Port Dickson family receives aid
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for immediate assistance to be provided to a family in Kampung Baru Si Rusa, Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, who are facing hardship after the head of the household suffered a stroke. The closed-door session with the PKR president, attended by nearly 1,000 party members, was also joined by party vice-presidents Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who is also Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang, and Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. Parliamentarians are key to peace and stability in this region, says Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly
PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Parliamentarians across South-East Asia must take on a more active role in promoting diplomacy and stability amid rising geopolitical tensions. This was the key message from top speakers at the 16th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Caucus held in Phnom Penh, who stressed that the role of lawmakers is more crucial than ever. Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn also called on parliamentarians to champion peace and regional stability. He said that in the interconnected yet fragmented world, sustainable peace is not merely the absence of war or conflict, but the presence of justice, understanding, and inclusivity. "In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and proliferation of divisive narratives, the role of parliamentarians as bridge builders and peace makers has become more crucial today than before,' Kao said in his keynote remarks. The heads of AIPA from Asean member states and Timor-Leste are participating in the two-day event, which is being held at the National Assembly hall in the capital. "This caucus serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating true structure of dialogue, mutual respect, and sheer commitment to peaceful resolution. We can address the most complex challenges facing the region or the world,' said Kao. The theme of the meeting is 'Peace Through Dialogue: The Parliamentary Path Forward' - emphasising the role of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving peace and prosperity.
