14,850 accident cases treated at Madurai GRH under NK-48 scheme

MADURAI: As many as 14,850 road accident victims have benefitted through the 'Innuyir Kappom Nammai Kakkum 48' (NK-48) scheme at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai, since its launch in December 2021 till April 2025, according to records from the GRH Emergency Department. The hospital has so far provided treatment worth Rs 15.01-crore free of cost for patients under the scheme, said Dr S Thanappan, HOD (Emergency Medicine), GRH.
For the four years till 2024, the hospital has performed a total of 11,869 surgeries under the scheme -- 4,122 neurosurgeries, 3,056 orthopaedic surgeries, 4,247 general surgeries, and 444 major surgeries. In 2025, till April, the emergency department of the hospital has carried out 523 neurosurgeries, 557 orthopaedic surgeries, and 921 general surgeries.
Speaking to TNIE, Dr Thanappan said, "The primary task of the scheme is to treat and save the victims within 48 hours of the accident. Thus, all kinds of road accident cases are included in the scheme, and only these cases are eligible. A majority of the cases are related to neurology and neurosurgery, fractures (ortho) and severe vascular injuries. Often, cases from Theni, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul are referred to the GRH, as victims might require advanced procedures, especially neurosurgeries. Many district hospitals and medical college hospitals do not have specialists in neurology, posing difficulties in treating head injuries at those facilities."

ACB flags major lapses at NTR Hospital; 22 medical staff face action

VIJAYAWADA: Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has ordered a swift inquiry into serious irregularities at NTR Hospital in Anakapalle, following an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) report indicting 22 medical personnel. The report, based on a surprise inspection in February 2020 and submitted in June this year, recommended major penalties against the then District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS), nine doctors, and 12 nurses. Citing lapses such as unauthorised canteen operations, failure to disclose patient meal details, irregular civil works, poor food quality monitoring, and mismanagement of hospital duties, the report painted a grim picture of hospital administration. The DCHS was specifically accused of failing to enforce staff attendance and neglecting key supervisory responsibilities. Disciplinary action has also been recommended against nine doctors for negligence, and 12 nurses for patient overexposure, poor hygiene, lack of diet charts, and improper medicine documentation. The Minister also ordered action against a driver for fuel misappropriation worth Rs 74,000 and a sanitation worker for unauthorised medical dressing duties. Reaffirming his commitment to reform public healthcare, Minister Yadav said the move underscores the government's zero-tolerance approach to corruption and inefficiency. Since assuming office, he has prioritised staff accountability, regular inspections, and performance-based transfers. In recent months, the government has reassigned hospital superintendents, medical college principals, office superintendents, and clerical staff to plug loopholes in governance. Non-performers were removed and replacements appointed on merit. Field-level officers, including District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs), were instructed to ensure strict implementation of health schemes and maintain discipline in operations. Calling the ACB report a reminder of past administrative failures, the Minister assured continued reforms to restore public confidence in government hospitals and ensure better service delivery.

Centre asks Odisha to ensure cashless treatment of road accident victims

BHUBANESWAR: The Centre has directed the Odisha government to immediately implement the cashless treatment of road accident victims scheme-2025 in letter and spirit without any further delay. Even as more than two months have passed since the scheme was notified, several states, including Odisha, are yet to begin the process to implement it. The new scheme entitles every road accident victim to receive treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh for a maximum of seven days from the date of accident without any upfront payment. The states can use the existing technological platforms, including the electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and Transaction Management System (TMS) of the National Health Authority (NHA) to enable seamless coordination between hospitals and police for implementation of the scheme. At a recent review meeting chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Secretary V Umashankar, it was found that though Odisha has already migrated to TMS 2.0, there is no information about the designated agency, point of contact and other details essential for implementing the cashless treatment scheme. The MoRTH has asked the state government to submit details of the designated nodal agency, point of contact, confirmation of active TMS login by district collectors, details of all collectors for opening of accounts and grievance redressal officer from district road safety committee within 10 days. The Centre has clarified that while the cashless scheme leverages the Ayushman Bharat platform, it is a statutory scheme under law and is not a benefit scheme. Therefore, the cashless scheme will be applicable to all individuals irrespective of income criteria and it is different from the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

CMRF cheques worth Rs 72 lakh distributed

Kondapi: Social Welfare Minister Dr Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy strongly criticised YSRCP for allegedly spreading 'poison' against the coalition government's welfare initiatives. He distributed Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) cheques worth Rs 72 lakh to 83 beneficiaries from Kondapi assembly constituency, at his camp office in Turpu Nayudupalem on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, the minister praised Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for saving lives through CMRF assistance and providing healthcare support to the poor through large-scale cheque distributions. He said that the government is doing good work for people, but YSRCP is spewing venom against it. He highlighted the improvements in welfare hostels, noting that the coalition government has spent Rs 143 crore on hostel repairs within a year of coming to power, with 80 per cent of the work completed. The minister criticised the previous YSRCP government for neglecting hostel maintenance and questioned whether former CM Jagan ever considered student welfare during his five-year tenure. He announced plans to provide quality meals with fine rice and cosmetic kits containing 11 items to welfare hostels and Gurukula students. He stated that special medical officers have been appointed in each district for student healthcare, with over 20 students' lives saved through specialised treatment during the last academic year.
