Uttarakhand police raid multiple locations across 17 states in cyber crime cases
Senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh said, 'Uttarakhand Police is the first police force in the country to have carried out a coordinated action on such a large scale against cyber criminals. This has sent a strong message to cyber offenders across the nation that they are no longer beyond the reach of the law. The nationwide campaign being conducted by the state police is a decisive step against cybercrime. This initiative is not only ensuring the identification and arrest of the accused but is also strengthening coordination with police agencies of other states.'
'Our teams from the cybercrime police stations in Dehradun and Rudrapur coordinated with local police, other cybercrime units, and technical agencies to gather crucial information such as the addresses, mobile numbers, bank accounts, social media profiles, and other digital evidence of the accused. The teams successfully identified and verified the details of 52 individuals who had been absconding for a long time and were involved in cybercrime. These individuals were duly served legal notices......B-warrants were obtained for 7 cyber criminals who had already been arrested by police forces from other states and were lodged in various jails, and remand was secured for further investigation. Six bailable warrants issued by the court were also executed,' he said.
'During the campaign, 225 criminals were found to have opened bank accounts and obtained mobile numbers using fake names, addresses, and forged documents. This information was shared with our counterparts for further action,' he said.
In April, the STF constituted special teams to be dispatched to 28 states and union territories to act against 337 cybercriminals identified in over 200 cases.
In the first phase of 'Operation Prahar', 272 cybercriminals will be targeted and 65 cybercriminals in the second phase.
According to officials, the action is to be taken against 40 cybercriminals identified in Delhi, 38 in Maharashtra, 28 in Uttar Pradesh, 28 in Rajasthan, 25 in Tamil Nadu, 18 in West Bengal, 17 in Karnataka, 16 in Gujarat, 15 in Nagaland, 14 in Madhya Pradesh, 11 in Telangana, 10 in Kerala, 10 in Andhra Pradesh, 9 in Bihar, 8 in Haryana, 7 in Punjab, 6 in Assam, 6 in Manipur, 5 in Mizoram, 5 in Jharkhand, 5 in Goa, 4 in Odisha, 3 in Chhattisgarh, 3 in Delhi NCR, 2 in Tripura, 1 in Dadra Nagar Haveli, 1 in Meghalaya, 1 in Himachal Pradesh and 1 in Uttarakhand.
The amount lost by people of Uttarakhand in cybercrimes saw a massive 146% jump from ₹69 crore in 2023 to ₹170 crore in 2024, contributed by a sharp rise in incidents of digital arrest, and investment frauds, the data provided by the Uttarakhand police showed. To put it into perspective, cyber fraudsters swindled over ₹ 46.57 lakh per day.

Kolkata: The Bengal STF has arrested owners of a mobile shop on Birbhum for allegedly creating fake Aadhaar cards, using forged documents, in exchange for money. Inter-state drug cartel busted near Nepal border, 1 held
Dehradun: Uttarakhand police, in coordination with Maharashtra police and Nepal authorities, busted an inter-state drug cartel operating an illegal MDMA making unit under the cover of a poultry farm in Thal, Pithoragarh, near the India-Nepal border on Monday. One person was arrested during the raid. The crackdown followed the arrest of two men in Thane, Maharashtra, with 11 grams of MDMA -- Methylenedioxymethamphetamine -- on May 31. Their interrogation led authorities to the Pithoragarh unit run by Monu Gupta and Kunal Kohli. DGP Deepam Seth said that during the raid on the poultry farm, police recovered chemicals used to produce MDMA. Though no arrests were made initially, three people — Gupta, Bhim Yadav, and Amar Kohli — were later caught trying to flee to Nepal. Meanwhile, Kunal Kohli and his aides, Rahul and Vikram, escaped to Nepal. Rahul's wife, Isha, was arrested in Champawat with 5.6 kg of MDMA worth over Rs 10 crore. Police found that the cartel sourced chemicals from a licensed factory in Ghaziabad, and earlier from Thane and Varanasi, where they had operated similar units. Pithoragarh location was chosen for its proximity to Nepal, police added. Kohli was arrested in Nanakmatta with 7.4 grams of MDMA and raw materials to make 6 kg more. One accused, Vikram, remains at large as Rahul was held a few days ago. STF SSP Navneet Singh Bhullar said the group learned to make the drug in Thane. MDMA was manufactured in powder form in Pithoragarh, transported to Mumbai by train, and converted into tablets for sale.

Operation Kalnemi: Over 300 Fake Babas Nabbed In Uttarakhand
HALDWANI: In a sweeping crackdown on imposters exploiting religious sentiments, Uttarakhand Police on Tuesday has taken action against more than 300 fake babas under Operation Kalnemi across the Kumaon division. The initiative, launched under the directive of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aims to weed out fraudulent spiritual figures misguiding the public in the name of faith. Speaking to IANS, Inspector General (IG) Kumaon Riddhim Agarwal confirmed that the operation was conducted across all six districts of the Kumaon region, where over 300 individuals posing as saints, babas, or spiritual guides were identified. Action has been initiated through FIRs, challans, and preventive detentions. 'These individuals were exploiting people's faith through superstition, deceit, and false claims of divine powers,' Agarwal told IANS. 'They had no valid identity proof or documentation to support their credentials. During the campaign, suspects were taken into custody, their backgrounds verified, and necessary legal action was taken.' Agarwal further added that all police stations and outposts across Kumaon have been instructed to remain vigilant and continue the crackdown against suspicious figures masquerading as spiritual leaders. The operation is inspired by the mythological figure Kalnemi, a demon who appeared as a saint to mislead people. Drawing from this allegory, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami launched Operation Kalnemi on July 10, calling it a necessary move to protect the image of Sanatan Dharma. 'Just as the demon Kalnemi used disguise to deceive, many such 'Kalnemis' exist in today's society who are misusing religion to commit crimes,' CM Dhami had said while launching the initiative. 'This is an effort to protect people's faith and ensure that only true spiritual guides lead our communities.' The move comes at a time when Uttarakhand is witnessing increased religious activity due to the ongoing pilgrimage season. With sacred towns like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Kedarnath drawing large crowds, the government aims to ensure the safety and sanctity of these gatherings. The campaign has received widespread support from across the political spectrum. BJP national spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi praised the move, emphasising the need to end religious exploitation. 'Conversion through money, deception, or coercion must be strictly monitored and curbed,' he said. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal echoed the sentiment, stating, 'With the rise in awareness about Sanatan Dharma, many fake babas are trying to take advantage. I commend CM Dhami for protecting the integrity of our saintly traditions.' BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain also voiced his support. 'Many fake people are looting innocent believers with false promises and 'miracles.' This campaign will help unmask them,' he told. Interestingly, even Opposition parties backed the initiative, albeit with pointed remarks. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey welcomed the crackdown but urged the CM to look inward. 'Catching fake babas is commendable, but CM Dhami must also identify the 'Kalnemis' within his own party who are corrupt and creating social unrest,' he remarked.
