N.Y. High School Teacher Allegedly Posed as a Teen on Snapchat to Solicit Explicit Material from Minors: Police
After his arrest, the New York State Police investigated him and named him a suspect in a similar December 2024 case

Ryan McCaffery, 37, was charged with three counts of disseminating indecent material to minors in the first degree, three counts of attempted use of a child in a sexual performance who is under 17 years old, three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, as well as one count for promoting a sexual performance by a child under 17 and another count of possession of sexual performance by a child, according to New York State Police (NYSP) news release.
In January 2025, a search warrant was executed, and several of McCaffery's electronic devices were seized from his residence in suspected connection with sexual online chat conversations with juvenile victims under the age of 13 in 2022 in Bergen County, N.J. He allegedly communicated with a victim under the age of 13, while "purporting to be a juvenile but suspected to be an adult male," per the Bergen County, N.J., Prosecutors' Office on Friday, Feb. 14, news release.
McCaffery was then interviewed by the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) and Bergen County, N.J., Prosecutors' Office. He was subsequently arrested in February 2025 and charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of third-degree child endangerment, and two counts of fourth-degree lewdness, according to the office's news release.
McCaffery, a former Riverhead High School social studies teacher and coach, resigned from the Riverhead Central School District on Feb. 5 — just nine days before he was arrested in Bergen County. Interim Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said in a Monday, May 12, statement that charges against McCaffery do not involve students from Riverhead High School, per Riverhead Local.
After his arrest in New Jersey, the NYSP's Computer Crime Unit and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office executed multiple search warrants and subpoenas. As a result, it was found that a stranger, who was later revealed to be McCaffery, 'was requesting nude photos and engaging in sexual acts while video chatting with victims on Snapchat,' per the NYSP.
Over the past several months, the NYSP BCI continued investigating him regarding December 2024 allegations. On Monday, May 12, he surrendered himself to the NYSP in Riverside, N.Y. He was arrested, charged and transported to Suffolk County First District Court for arraignment.
McCaffery is scheduled to appear in New Jersey court on Thursday, May 15, and Monday, June 16 in Long Island, N.Y.

An elected official in Florida is facing two dozen felony charges after a mom in Illinois reported he had been sexting her 12-year-old daughter over Snapchat, authorities said. St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro Jr. announced July 24 that law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Fort Pierce City Commissioner James Taylor, 38, and took him into custody. His arrest marks the culmination of a nearly yearlong investigation that began in August 2024 when the victim's mom filed a report with the Evanston Police Department, the sheriff said in a news conference. The mom of the now-13-year-old girl said a man had been inappropriately contacting her daughter over Snapchat beginning when she was 12, according to investigators. He sent her nude images of himself and asked her to do the same, Del Toro said. This went on for a couple months, investigators said. Detectives in Illinois traced the messages to a person in St. Lucie County and contacted the sheriff's office, which confirmed the suspect's IP address belonged to Taylor, the sheriff said. Investigators don't believe Taylor and the girl ever met in person. Taylor was pulled over during a traffic stop involving a 'ruse,' and was cooperating with detectives, according to the sheriff. 'I would say that he admitted his role in these and was very remorseful, obviously, I think mainly because he was caught,' Del Toro said. Taylor was elected Fort Pierce's District 2 commissioner in 2024 after serving on the county's planning and zoning commission for nearly a decade, according to his commissioner biography. He's involved in several local organizations, including the county's education board and theater advisory board. 'The City of Fort Pierce is aware of the recent arrest of Commissioner James Taylor,' a spokesperson for the city told McClatchy News in an email. 'We understand that this development may raise concerns within our community, and we want to reassure our residents that we remain committed to serving the public with integrity, transparency and accountability.' The inquest into Jay Slater's disappearance was resumed today after being on hold for two months - but two key witnesses still failed to show on the final day of the investigation. Jay's other childhood friend, Lucy Law who he had met at secondary school, was seen as the "sensible" member of the group. When Jay called her on the morning of Monday June 17, and said he was walking home but needed a drink, she urged him to "go back" to the Airbnb "before it gets boiling". Jay's mobile phone battery then died, at around 8.43am, and he was reported missing shortly afterwards at 9am. His body was found in a ravine, on July 15, by a mountain rescue team who said Jay's bag had been found around 20 metres higher up - suggesting that was where he fell from. The inquest will continue from 10am on Friday, July 25 when the coroner will sum up the case and then deliver his conclusion.

Arkport man charged with arson for allegedly setting house on fire after domestic incident
An Arkport man was charged with arson for allegedly setting a house on fire after a domestic dispute in Dansville. New York State Police said Hornell-based troopers responded to 9050 county Route 46 in the Town of Dansville at around 11 p.m. on July 21 after a neighbor reported loud yelling and requested a welfare check. Upon arrival, troopers found heavy smoke and an active fire within the residence. State police personnel entered the structure to ensure no one was inside and then exited due to the extent of the fire and smoke. According to state police, 21-year-old Jayden I. Cain was located in a nearby shed on the property. Police said Cain admitted to intentionally starting the fire with gasoline. Cain was taken into custody without incident and the scene was turned over to Steuben County fire investigators. No injuries were reported. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and the residence has been deemed a total loss. State police said the incident followed a domestic dispute earlier in the evening, where Cain forcibly took and damaged the victim's phone.
