Riddle me this
Looking to find something unique? Shop for the latest 'it' items at the National Museum of Korea, look for one-of-a-kind vintage items with an American vibe at a Hongdae store. Feeling restless? Head outdoors for a weekend glamping. Hunting down museum goods The National Museum of Korea has always enjoyed a steady trickle of visitors to its gift shop, where history gets a stylish twist. Recently, however, a fresh wave of enthusiasm has been sweeping through the store. Fans of Netflix's hit animated film "Kpop Demon Hunters" are flocking to get their hands on the "authentic" goods inspired by the traditional items referenced in the film. The tiger and magpie badge, which very much resembles Derpy and the three-eyed magpie from the film and is a playful nod to the traditional duo often seen in Joseon-era minhwa folk paintings, has already sold out but will be restocked soon, according to the museum. Other hot items include gat-inspired accessories such as bookmarks, pencil tops and keyrings. One standout is the Ilwol Obongdo collection, featuring pouches and bags printed with the majestic image of five mountain peaks, the sun and the moon. Historically, this image from the folding screen was reserved for kings. In the film, it forms the backdrop to the 'Golden' stage where the fierce trio, Huntrix, performs. Don't skip the museum itself. It offers a rich journey through Korea's cultural heritage and is the perfect place to escape the summer heat while connecting with history. If you would like to look specifically for the Ilwol Obongdo and tiger-magpie painting, visit the Calligraphy and Painting section on the second floor of the museum. National Museum of Korea 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul Mountain glamping getaway at Spoon Camping deep in the mountains is not just for seasoned campers anymore with places providing convenience for those seeking an escape into nature. For those without equipment or a desire to set up a tent themselves, Spoon Glamping in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, offers a ready-made retreat with stunning views and cozy comforts. Nestled high in a quiet mountain village, Spoon Glamping offers a surreal landscape and an interior design that evokes an almost exotic atmosphere. The site is divided into two areas: the glamping zone and the caravan zone. One major advantage of the glamping zone is its panoramic mountain view. Each glamping tent is equipped with a barbecue grill and a fire pit, perfect for late-night conversations or roasting marshmallows for dessert. Between the room and the grill is a small outdoor table, where guests can place their food and enjoy grilled pork belly or seafood over charcoal while seated in classic camping chairs. However, the idyllic scenery and fresh mountain air come at a cost — a compromise with nature. Mountain moths and mosquitoes are inevitable visitors. While insect repellents are provided, their effectiveness may vary. And from online marketplaces to neighborhood shops, places to discover one-of-a-kind treasures are limitless. If you are wandering around Hongdae, head over to Little Riddle, a select shop that offers vintage goods in an atmosphere that feels distinctly American. It is only a minute- walk to the shop from Exit No. 6, Hongik University Station on Subway Line No. 2. The store sells vintage-style knitwear, magnets, keyrings, T-shirts, mugs and Kit-cat Klocks, made in the US since 1932, to name a few. All of these items would make great gifts to bring to a housewarming party or to have for yourself. The shop also features a display ranking the top eight incense scents, making it easier for customers to choose. Stick cost about 4,000 won each or 10,000 won for a set of three. hwangdh@ jaaykim@ junheee@

Hot dogs and burgers to celebrate summer
Summer means easy dining, and these American classics never fail American celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain famously said that food is everything we are. That may be an exaggeration, but cuisine is like a flag on a plate that carries our roots and pride, with flavors from our grandmother's kitchen. That is why many who live abroad crave the taste of home: One bite can bring comfort, spark emotions and make the unfamiliar place feel a little more familiar. For those missing classic American bites, here are several hot dog and burger joints in Seoul where you can celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends. Philly Dog Inspired by the Philly dog, also known as a Philadelphia-style hot dog or regionally as a Philly combo, the namesake take-out only restaurant in Yongsan-gu, central Seoul, brings authentic American-style hot dogs to Korea. The eatery offers three types of hot dogs. The original hot dog, priced at 6,900 won ($5.10), features a soft, buttery brioche bun and a thick 100-gram sausage, offering a simple, classic take on the hot dog. The signature Philly hot dog, also featuring a soft brioche bun, tops the sausage with seasoned sirloin beef and melted American Swiss cheese for an extra-rich flavor. Enjoy this upgraded take on the original hot dog for 8,900 won. The cheesesteak hot dog is a twist on the original hot dog, swapping out the sausage for a generous serving of sirloin beef and cheese. Served on the same soft brioche bun, it is priced at 9,900 won. French fries cost 3,900 won, while a serving of four chicken tenders is priced at 5,900 won. Oldies Hotdog In Seoul's Chungmuro neighborhood, a storied hub for culture and film but also a hip area that blends old and new, you can find Oldies Hotdog. The signature Oldies Hotdog, priced at 7,900 won, is a flavorful, fully loaded hot dog with a savory sausage topped with Cheetos powder, adding a crunchy, cheesy flavor. It is finished with onions, paprika and a blend of house sauce, mustard, ketchup and snack powder for extra zest. As the name suggests, the chilli hot dog, priced at 8,900 won, is a spicy hot dog loaded with chili con carne -- a spicy meat sauce made from a mix of ground beef and pork -- along with shredded mozzarella, cheddar and nacho cheese, onions and paprika. The corn mayo hot dog, also priced at 8,900 won, is a marriage of American and Mexican flavors. It is topped with esquite -- a Mexican-style street corn dish made with corn kernels mixed with mayonnaise, cheese and chilli powder -- adding a creamy yet slightly spicy twist to the classic hot dog. The mac and cheese hot dog is topped with cheesy macaroni and sausage. It is priced at 8,900 won. Hangang Burger Hangang Burger in Yongsan-gu is one of Seoul's top gourmet burger spots, attracting food aficionados with its unique flavors and irresistible charm. The signature Hangang BBQ Burger, offered at 12,500 won, is a juicy cheeseburger featuring two beef patties, double cheese, fresh lettuce and onions, all topped with the restaurant's distinctive barbecue sauce for a bold, unique flavor. The shrimp burger, available for 11,900 won, features a crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside shrimp patty packed with plump shrimp for a deliciously satisfying bite. The jambon burger combines jambon with lettuce and the restaurant's distinctive sauce. It is priced at 9,500 won. Hangang Burger's American-style cheeseburger features a juicy, seasoned beef patty topped with melted cheese, onions and the restaurant's signature sauce. It is a classic that is simple yet satisfying, priced at 5,500 won. The restaurant also serves French fries for 4,000 won and a serving of eight barbecue chicken wings for 12,000 won. Dakgangjeong salad, a Korean dish of fried chicken, glazed with sweet and spicy sauce and served with vegetables, is priced at 25,000 won. Bored & Hungry Bored & Hungry in Seoul's hip Seongsu-dong neighborhood offers a mix of traditional and Korean-inspired flavors. The classic cheeseburger, priced at 8,900 won, features a juicy, seasoned beef patty topped with melted cheese, onions and the restaurant's signature sauce, served in a buttery toasted bun. The P.B.B. burger features peanut butter, bacon, cheese and onions, and goes for 14,900 won. The dish is one that will divide opinion -- some will love it; others, not so much. For those gravitating toward something spicy, the B.L.T.J. burger -- which stands for bacon, lettuce, tomato and jalapeno -- is the one. It is priced at 11,900 won. U.S. Cities Demonstrate Dominant Appeal in Global Tourism Rankings, Led by New York in Top 4
Yanolja Research Announces Inaugural 'Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index' SEOUL, South Korea, July 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Yanolja Research, a global research institute specializing in the travel and tourism industry, today announced the inaugural "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" at the '2025 Global Tourism City Attractiveness Evaluation' seminar. This new index objectively evaluates the appeal of major tourism cities worldwide, distinctly from the perspective of global travelers. Developed jointly by Yanolja Research, Purdue University's CHRIBA Institute in the U.S., and Kyung Hee University's H&T Analytics Center in Seoul, Korea, the index evaluated the attractiveness of 191 tourism cities using global social media data in 14 languages, provided by Brandwatch in the UK. In the 2025 evaluation, Osaka, Japan, rose two ranks from its 3rd place in 2024 to secure the top spot overall, with Kyoto ranking 3rd. Notably, U.S. cities showcased exceptional strength, with New York leading the American contingent by securing a remarkable 4th place globally. Unparalleled Strength of U.S. Cities in Global Tourism The 2025 Yanolja Attractiveness Index highlights the profound and diverse appeal of the United States as a global tourism powerhouse. A significant number of U.S. cities received high evaluations, demonstrating their consistent draw for international travelers across a wide range of experiences. New York led the way at 4th place globally, reinforcing its enduring appeal as a premier destination known for its cultural dynamism and iconic skyline. Washington, D.C. followed at 13th, celebrated for its historical landmarks and national significance, while Los Angeles claimed the 14th position, praised as a global hub for entertainment, creativity, and diversity. Chicago secured 17th place, earning recognition for its architectural grandeur and rich cultural offerings, and Boston, ranked 21st, continued to charm visitors with its blend of American history and modern vibrancy. San Francisco followed at 24th, admired for its unique character, tech innovation, and scenic beauty, while Miami came in at 27th, well-known for its eclectic mix of Latin culture, beaches, and nightlife. Las Vegas maintained its status as a global entertainment capital at 36th, and Seattle, with its thriving tech scene and natural surroundings, secured the 47th position. Rounding out the top 50, Orlando placed 48th, continuing to attract families and theme park enthusiasts from around the world. Beyond the top 50, other American cities continued to make a strong showing. New Orleans ranked 56th, lauded for its vibrant music, food, and festival scene, while Honolulu secured the 100th spot, remaining a sought-after destination for travelers seeking tropical beauty and island experiences. The widespread presence of U.S. cities across the rankings reaffirms the country's diverse appeal and its enduring strength in the global tourism landscape. New Metric Evaluates Tourism Cities Through 'Affection' and 'Cognition' Unlike traditional "tourism competitiveness" evaluations that focus on supply-side factors like transportation, accommodation infrastructure, and policy, the "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" prioritizes measuring a tourism city's "appeal" from the perspective of actual travel consumers. To achieve this, it uses two core pillars: "Tourism City Attractiveness," which indicates how positively a specific tourism city is viewed, and "Tourism City Reputation," which reflects how widely known and discussed it is. Based on these two pillars, Yanolja Research conducted a comprehensive evaluation by segmenting a tourism city's attractiveness into four key dimensions: Urban Aesthetics and Natural Scenery, Culture and History, Experiential Tourism Contents, Hospitality. Global Tourism City Attractiveness: Diverse Leaders Emerge In the 2025 overall rankings, while Japan's Osaka (1st) and Kyoto (3rd) demonstrated strong performance, the global landscape showed diverse regional strengths. Asian cities, including Seoul (5th), Bangkok (7th) and Chiang Mai (20th) from Asia, continued their significant progress. European tourism cities such as Paris (2nd), London (6th), and Rome (8th) continued to exhibit strong brand power, although some traditional favorites like Madrid (29th) and Barcelona (25th) experienced shifts, reflecting evolving global tourism preferences. Expert Opinions Commenting on the research findings, Dr. SooCheong Jang, Professor at Purdue University, stated, "The 'Yanolja Attractiveness Index' is the first attempt to analyze a tourism city's 'appeal' factors through the actual voices of tourists, going beyond infrastructure-centric evaluations. The robust performance of cities across diverse regions, including the U.S., Japan, and other Asian nations, demonstrates how dynamically tourist preferences are changing. Moving forward, for tourism cities to lead the global market, discovering and communicating their unique charm will be a core strategy." Professor Kyu-wan Choi of Kyung Hee University's College of Hotel and Tourism Management added, "Osaka's ascent to #1 proves the power of diverse and engaging experiential content. The robust presence of numerous U.S. cities in the top tiers, alongside other global leaders, showcases the powerful effect of combining unique cultural offerings with modern amenities and natural beauty. Now is the time for strategic consideration to connect this opportunity to sustainable growth and further enhance the unique appeal of each region." Yanolja Research plans to regularly announce the "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" annually to track global tourism trends and changes in tourism city competitiveness. Detailed results and analysis of the Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index, released on July 2, can be found on the official Yanolja Research website:
