This new biodegradable film could save 20 per cent on energy bills
A new biodegradable film developed by scientists in China and Australia could slash building energy use by up to 20 per cent and keep surfaces up to 9.2C cooler without using any electricity, according to a new study.
The material is made from polylactic acid – a bioplastic derived from plants – and passively reflects nearly all solar radiation while allowing heat from inside buildings to escape into the sky.
Researchers from Zhengzhou University and the University of South Australia say the metafilm can be an alternative to air conditioning systems, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions in cities.
'Our metafilm offers an environmentally friendly alternative to air-conditioning,' Yangzhe Hou, lead author of the study and a PhD candidate at the University of South Australia and Zhengzhou University.
'The material reflects nearly all solar radiation but also allows internal building heat to escape directly into outer space. This enables the building to stay cooler than the surrounding air, even under direct sunlight.'
In testing, the film passively reduced temperatures by as much as 9.2C during peak sunlight hours, according to the study published in Cell Reports Physical Science on Wednesday. On an average, it kept surfaces 4.9C cooler during daytime and 5.1C cooler at night.
Unlike conventional cooling systems, the film requires no electricity or mechanical components.
The metafilm also withstood harsh weather conditions, maintaining its cooling performance even after 120 hours of exposure to strong acid and the equivalent of eight months of ultraviolet exposure outdoors, according to the study.
It continued to cool surfaces by up to 6.5C under those conditions.
'Most existing passive radiative cooling systems rely on petrochemical-based polymers or ceramics that raise environmental concerns,' Dr Xianhu Liu from Zhengzhou University said.
'By using biodegradable PLA, we are presenting a green alternative that offers high solar reflectance, strong thermal emission, sustainability and durability.'
Computer simulations showed using the metafilm on buildings in hot cities such as Lhasa in China 's Tibet region could reduce annual energy consumption by over 20 per cent.
'This isn't just a lab-scale success,' Professor Jun Ma from the University of South Australia claimed. 'Our film is scalable, durable and completely degradable. This research aims to contribute to sustainable development by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and exploring feasible pathways to improve human comfort while minimising environmental impact.'
The team is now looking into large-scale manufacturing and possible applications in transportation, agriculture, electronics and biomedical products, including cooling wound dressings.
Passive cooling technologies have gained traction in recent years, with various teams experimenting with ceramic coatings, reflective paints, and polymer-based films. However, many such innovations have faced limitations around cost, fragility, or environmental impact. Other recent breakthroughs include an ultrawhite starch-based film that passively cools surfaces by reflecting 96 per cent of sunlight and a ceramic roof coating that withstands extreme temperatures while reducing cooling loads by 20 per cent.

Parents are being warned to limit children's screen time after a study found it could lead to them having smaller brains and lower intelligence. Scientists found children who watched television and used smartphones, tablets and computers had, on average, lower IQs and less intracranial volume (ICV) – a marker for brain size. In contrast, children who exercised in their spare time were likely to be more intelligent and had a larger brain volume, according to the research. The study used databases from across Europe that contained information from thousands of children on IQ, screen use and physical exercise. This was analysed to establish whether there was any link between leisure time habits, intelligence and ICV – the total space within the skull which is used as a proxy for the maximum size of the brain. Larger ICV has been linked to superior intelligence. The researchers, based in China, say their results provide further evidence that excessive screen time has a lifelong impact on children's brain development. 'These findings highlight the critical need to manage and regulate children's media use while also promoting increased physical activity,' they wrote in the journal Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. The study comes as children's screen time use has rocketed in recent years. The average amount of time British children aged five to 15 spend on screens rose from nine hours a week in 2009 to 15 hours a week in 2018, according to a House of Commons education committee report from last year. While there can be benefits, including building friendships and improving learning, negative effects include online bullying, exposure to violence and pornography, lower levels of physical activity and eye strain. Sir Cary Cooper, a psychology professor at the University of Manchester, said: 'Children are using these devices and they are not learning social and non-verbal skills that we pick up from interacting, face-to-face, with other people.'

But they added: "Nor can it be proven until more information is provided." Group chair Marietjie Venter said after three years of investigating, they were unable to come to a certain conclusion of the pandemic's origins. World Health Organization is STILL siding with China over Covid's origins as report rules out lab leak
A group of experts investigating Covid origins on behalf of the World Health Organization revealed they still aren't sure how the pandemic began. At a press briefing Friday, chair of the group Marietjie Venter said most data supports the idea that Covid jumped to humans from animals. It's the same conclusion the WHO drew in 2021, when scientists said the virus likely spread from bats to human through another 'intermediary animal.' Venter said that after three years of investigating, the WHO group was unable to get necessary data to determine if Covid was the result of a lab leak, despite hundreds of requests for genetic sequences and biosecurity information to the Chinese government. She said: 'Therefore, this hypothesis could not be investigated or excluded. It was deemed to be very speculative, based on political opinions and not backed up by science.' She said there was no evidence to prove that Covid had been manipulated in a lab, nor was there any indication that the virus had been spreading before December 2019 anywhere outside of China. Venter claims the 27-member group did not reach a firm consensus on Covid's origins, as one member resigned earlier this week and three others asked for their names to be removed from the report. She said: 'Until more scientific data becomes available, the origins of how SARS-CoV-2 entered human populations will remain inconclusive.' The report comes after US authorities said earlier this month they had 'seized' Dr Anthony Fauci's old phone in search of answers about Covid's origin. FBI boss Kash Patel told Joe Rogan: 'We found it [the devices], and at least we can tell the American people we've been looking because it is of public importance to figure out, did that guy lie? 'Did he intentionally mislead the world and cause countless deaths?' The FBI and CIA have both asserted they think Covid most likely originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China, which was conducting risky experiments on coronaviruses in the years leading up to the pandemic. Some of those experiments were funded by US taxpayer money through grants awarded by Dr Fauci's old department, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was a 'moral imperative' to determine how Covid began, noting that the virus killed at least 20 million people worldwide, wiped at least $10trillion from the global economy and upended the lives of billions. Last year, the AP found that the Chinese government froze meaningful domestic and international efforts to trace the virus' origins in the first weeks of the outbreak in 2020 and that WHO itself may have missed early opportunities to investigate how Covid began. President Donald Trump has long blamed the emergence of the coronavirus on a laboratory accident in China, while a U.S. intelligence analysis found there was insufficient evidence to prove the theory. Chinese officials have repeatedly dismissed the idea that the pandemic could have started in a lab, saying that the search for its origins should be conducted in other countries. Last September, researchers zeroed in on a short list of animals they think might have spread COVID-19 to humans, including racoon dogs, civet cats and bamboo rats. The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) carried out a secret investigation into the origins of Covid nicknamed Project Saaremaa during the pandemic, sharing the findings with the US in December 2024. Investigators found unpublished dissertations from 2019 and 2020 that allegedly discussed the effects of coronaviruses on the human body. Additionally, uncovered materials revealed Chinese scientists had 'an unusually large amount of knowledge about the supposedly novel virus available at an unusually early stage.' Based on the materials BND agents found and analyzed, they used a 'Probability Index' to measure the reliability of information, which determined the lab-leak theory was 'probable' with an '80 to 95 percent' certainty. Robert Redfield, former CDC director when the pandemic erupted, also accused American and British health agencies of shutting down concerns over potential lab leaks. He previously told he is '100 percent' convinced Covid was the result of scientists becoming infected while carrying out high-risk experiments to boost the infectivity of bat viruses amid low biosecurity in Wuhan labs.
