Major plans to upgrade Renfrewshire football ground given green light

Glasgow Times04-06-2025
Johnstone Burgh's application to renovate Keanie Park, situated on Auchenlodment Road, has been approved by Renfrewshire Council's planning department, subject to conditions.
Submitted by Glasgow-based firm GlenEtive Projects on behalf of Scott Graham, the club's director, the plans include the replacement of four lighting columns and the erection of four new lighting columns, the installation of a 4G Astro pitch and associated engineering works, and the installation of a portable WC toilet blocks and prefabricated spectator stand.
The proposal also details mechanical, electrical and other engineering works, an outdoor amenity space and landscaping.

The planning statement, which was submitted in August of last year, outlined the vision to create "a community club for all groups".
It read: "The club has recently been promoted and therefore SFA requirement(s) are the clubs facility must be upgraded.
"The overall vision is to create community club for all groups within the local community to use the facility and improvements to the pitch, club and facility to allow access to all groups and disabilities.
"Overall, the proposals would make a positive contribution to the local sports and health and wellbeing in Johnstone."
In its assessment of the plans, Renfrewshire Council said: "In terms of the visual impact, the proposed synthetic playing surface raises no visual amenity issues of substance.
"The spectator stand also raises no significant visual concerns.
"While the stand occupies an elevated position, it is of a very modest scale and is in keeping with the character of the site as an established football ground.
"The toilet block would be sited in relative proximity to Auchenlodment Road and more prominently visible from the road.
"While the lighting columns would be quite notably high, they would be sufficiently set back from the roads to result in minimal impact on the respective street scenes.
"With regard to issues of noise and disturbance, as the football ground is already long established and the proposals are not increasing its capacity.
"The addition of a synthetic playing surface enables the pitch to be used more frequently without deterioration, thereby enabling its use to be extended to the local community.
"The extension of sport and recreation facilities has clear potential to benefit the health and lifestyles of many people and the wider community."

Rangers 'a different world' for Cameron

Lyall Cameron says being at Rangers is "a different world" to what life was like at Dundee. The midfielder joined the Ibrox club in the summer and made his competitive debut in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Motherwell, replacing Mohamed Diomande for the final half an hour. Rangers led for much of the match at Fir Park, thanks to James Tavernier's first half header, but Motherwell equalised late on to snatch a point and manager Russell Martin didn't shy away from criticising the attitude shown by his players after the final whistle. "The overall feeling on Saturday was disappointment," the 22-year-old said. "I wanted to come on and help the team win. To draw in the end wasn't good enough. "We understand how critical it's been since then in the media, the fans weren't happy but that's expected because we need to win games and we know it wasn't good enough."Cameron knows it's not the last of the criticism his new side will receive but is fully focused on giving his all for the club. "It's a different world here than what I was used to [at Dundee]," he added. "Every game is so much bigger, the pressure and everything. I just take everything as it comes, I don't get too involved in anything. "I just keep myself out of it, give 100 per cent and know I'm doing the best I can do."

Can Motherwell follow-up strong opening day performance?

Former Scotland defender Charlie Mulgrew thinks a lack of quality in the final third could hinder Motherwell's top-six Steelmen looked strong in their league opener against last year's runners-up Rangers, winning the ball back on the press and at times cutting the Glasgow side open with intricate passing play on their way to a 1-1 draw at Mulgrew thinks they can't get ahead of themselves, considering the timing of the to BBC's Scottish Football Podcast, he said: "I think it's easy to get carried away when you play Rangers or Celtic at the start of the season and get a result."Motherwell are so good going through the lines, but I don't know if they have enough in the final third."I think their style works better against a team like Rangers that will press high so they can play through them, but I don't imagine teams will do that often against them. "Like a St Mirren, can they break them down that way?"Whether Jens Berthel Askou's team can gain continued success with this style is yet to be proven. However, there can be no argument that they played with the bravery their boss wants, and got a positive result against one of the best teams in the ex-Scotland international Michael Stewart added: "I'm really impressed with how Motherwell played against Rangers."I saw them against Morton in the Premier Sports Cup, and up until that game, the issue was end product."I think from defensive third to middle third they'll be able to compete with anyone, but the final third will be their defining factor this season."It's not horrendous, but compared with how good the build-up is from defence to midfield, if they were as good in attack, they'd be comfortable top 6 and challenging above that."Yesterday seemed like it would be a hard luck story, creating chances and not scoring."But they broke through and thoroughly deserved their draw, and really arguably could've got three points. It's exciting."

Bonus Time for Twomey at Naas

Keane did not have to ask the daughter of Too Darn Hot too many questions, as the Paddy Twomey-trained filly ran out a half-length winner from Kodilicious, who kept on well for second, with the still green Zuheila in third. Twomey said: 'Her last run was her first run for us and we tried seven in a handicap. She ran really well and Andy (Oliver)'s horse is a good horse that beat her just at the line. 'First time in a handicap carrying 10st and I just thought the last 50 yards looked a long way, so we said we'd come back to six today. 'It looked a nice spot for her and I'm very happy how she did it. Colin looked after her and gave her a nice ride. 'Colin said she could be dropped in and that she was waiting there in front.' The three-year-old is owned by Yorkshire-based Bond Thoroughbred Limited, and Twomey added: 'We'll try to get some black type with her eventually and she might go to the Ebor meeting in York.' Mint Man won on turf at the 11th time of asking in the Taste Of Kildare At Naas Racecourse 16th – 17th August Handicap. The Pat Murphy-trained four-year-old launched his challenge two furlongs out and hit the front heading into the final furlong, keeping on well to win by a length and a half. Murphy said of his 8-1 winner: 'He was in good form and is not a massive horse so carrying less weight today helped him. 'Leigh said he winged the gates and travelled away nicely for him. He hung a bit to the near side but has done it nicely. 'I thought he would have won more by now. 'We'll see what comes up for him and he could run in the Curragh on Saturday.' Keane completed a double on Noli Timere in the LubriSyn HA+ Premium Equine Joint Protection Fillies Maiden. Michael O'Callaghan's filly justified 11-4 favouritism and he said: 'She's a lovely filly and has taken a bit of time but is one we have always liked. 'We put cheekpieces on today, more to sharpen her up dropping back from a mile and one. 'Colin said a mile is her trip and she'll improve for slower ground. That is as quick as she wants it and we'll probably go hunting for a little bit of black type.'
