Report: Newcastle striker returns amid uncertain future
Newcastle United's summer has taken another twist with the unexpected return of Alexander Isak from his personal training camp in Spain. As reported by Sky Sports News' Keith Downie, the Swedish striker is 'due back in Newcastle today following his personal training camp in Spain,' having opted out of the club's pre-season tour of Asia.
Isak's Unconventional Recovery Raises Eyebrows
Isak's decision to rehab at Real Sociedad's training base in San Sebastián—his former club—has raised eyebrows, not least because of how Newcastle manager Eddie Howe learned of it. 'Eddie Howe said this morning out in South Korea that he found out Isak had travelled to Spain via the media,' Sky Sports confirmed. That revelation underscores potential friction between the player and club, especially with a reported thigh injury keeping him out of the team's Asian tour.

Isak's absence, while unexplained by Newcastle publicly, hints at deeper complexities behind the scenes. His choice to train alone and with personal staff could signal dissatisfaction or uncertainty about his future at St. James' Park.
Liverpool's Bid and Newcastle's Response
Adding fuel to the fire, Liverpool reportedly made a massive move for the striker, with Sky Sports reporting that 'Liverpool yesterday had a £110m bid for the striker rejected by Newcastle.' Such a sizeable offer, though ultimately turned down, suggests Newcastle could be preparing for life without their star forward.
In response, the Magpies are not standing still. According to Sky Sports, 'Newcastle this morning made a £70m offer to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko as they attempt to line up a replacement for Isak, should he leave for Liverpool.' The club's swift action in pursuing Sesko implies they are at least open to cashing in on Isak—if the price is right.
Key Decisions Loom for Eddie Howe
Newcastle's pre-season tour concludes on Monday, at which point decisions about squad structure and Isak's role must be made. Whether Isak remains central to Howe's plans or becomes a headline-grabbing exit, this story is far from over.
Our View – EPL Index Analysis
From a Newcastle fan's perspective, the entire Isak situation is concerning but not altogether surprising. On one hand, Isak has been a phenomenal asset since joining, offering pace, flair, and crucial goals in last season's top-four push and cup win. Fans will understand his need to manage fitness carefully—especially with a recurring thigh issue—but choosing to train solo in Spain, and not informing the manager, feels like poor communication at best.
Moreover, Eddie Howe finding out through the media is a red flag. This hints at either mismanagement or discontent from the player's side, and Newcastle supporters will want clarity from both the club and Isak himself. If Liverpool's £110m bid is accurate, the potential even higher fee would be excellent, but replacing Isak won't be easy. Sesko is a talent, but he's unproven at Premier League level.
Many fans would prefer the club hold firm unless Isak explicitly asks to leave. At the same time, if his head has been turned, it may be better to cash in now and reinvest smartly while there's time in the window.
Whatever happens, clear communication and a quick resolution are essential to avoid disruption in what promises to be a pivotal season for the Magpies.

Monday's briefing: Tottenham worry over Maddison injury and Chelsea sign Hato
Tottenham midfielder James Maddison sustained a 'bad' injury before manager Thomas Frank bolstered his squad with the arrival of Joao Palhinha. Chelsea signed Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato, while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is unsure what the future holds for wantaway striker Alexander Isak. Elsewhere, Scottish Premiership champions Celtic scraped past St Mirren. Maddison suffers fresh injury setback James Maddison sustained a serious-looking knee injury as Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia concluded with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in Seoul. The England international, who missed the closing stages of last season with a knee problem, was carried off on a stretcher after going down unchallenged late in the game. Manager Thomas Frank said the issue appeared to be a 'bad injury' before Spurs later announced the signing of Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich. Sunday's friendly was otherwise notable for the emotional reception departing South Korea forward Son Heung-min received from fans in his home city. Teenage Dutch defender moves to Stamford Bridge Chelsea completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth a reported £37million. The 19-year-old, who has been capped six times by his country, signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He became the Blues' eighth signing of the summer transfer window. Hato, who can operate in central defence or at left-back, said: 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that.' Howe leaves door open for Isak Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is hoping to see striker Alexander Isak back in training in the coming days. Isak, who has been the subject of interest from Liverpool, missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future. Newcastle are returning home after their trip concluded against Spurs on and Howe hopes the Sweden international will report back as normal. Howe told The Chronicle after the game: 'Of course I'd like him to but whether or not he will, I don't know at this moment in time. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.' Late deflected strike secures narrow win for Celtic William Hill Premiership champions Celtic left it late before beginning their title defence with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren at Parkhead. Luke McCowan's deflected strike three minutes from time finally broke the visitors' resistance. The substitute collected Daizen Maeda's square pass on the edge of a crowded penalty box and fired a shot which appeared to spin off Mark O'Hara's leg and nestle into the bottom corner of the net. Celtic had earlier hit the frame of the goal through Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate and Adam Idah, while Callum McGregor had a goal disallowed following VAR intervention. What's on today? Hearts host Aberdeen at Tynecastle in the final match of the opening round of fixtures of the new Scottish Premiership season.

Darwin Nunez twist could have major impact on Alexander Isak transfer to Liverpool
Newcastle's owners could end up indirectly helping Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak. That's because Al-Hilal, the club that is interested in signing Darwin Nunez from the Reds, is majoratively owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund — the same group that majoratively owns Newcastle. Nunez could leave Liverpool before the transfer window closes after three underwhelming seasons on Merseyside, and after Napoli dropped its interest several weeks ago due to Nunez's price tag, there are not many top-level European options remaining for the Uruguayan. The riches on offer in Saudi Arabia could appeal to Nunez, and it is reported by The Athletic that Al-Hilal has made the 26-year-old its top striking target after seeing Victor Osimhen move to Galatasaray. READ MORE: Eddie Howe throws Alexander Isak future into fresh doubt amid Liverpool transfer saga READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak bid, Rodrygo agrees terms, Tyler Morton to Lyon Other targets like Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak are viewed as less attainable than Nunez, which is why the Saudi Pro League club is now firmly focused on Liverpool's No.9. If Al-Hilal, funded by the PIF, signs Nunez for the Reds' reported $81 million asking price, that could be the difference between Liverpool signing Isak and Liverpool not signing Isak. Meanwhile, Isak is expected to return to Newcastle's training ground today (Monday) after ruling himself out of the pre-season tour of Asia. Isak did not travel across the world with his teammates, with the official reason being that he was carrying a slight injury, but it soon emerged what the real reason for his absence was. Isak remains keen to leave Newcastle — and he could yet get his wish, despite Liverpool seeing a $146 million bid for the player swiftly rejected last week. Despite being set to return to Newcastle's training ground, Isak has been warned by Magpies manager Eddie Howe that he won't be reintegrated before proving that he is ready to give his all for his current club. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe said. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal."

Manchester United 2-2 Everton: Bryan Mbeumo impresses on debut as Mason Mount nets beauty
Bryan Mbeumo made his long-awaited bow as a Manchester United player as the Red Devils rounded off their US pre-season tour with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Everton. Ruben Amorim's side lifted the second edition of the Premier League Summer Series at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia despite being held by a stubborn Toffees side. The result leaves United unbeaten in the three games they have played Stateside, following on from 2-1 and 4-1 victories over West Ham and Bournemouth respectively. This, however, was the game that all United fans had wanted to see, as both big-money recruits - Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha - lined up together for the very first time. Both impressed significantly. What Amorim will like even more is that they performed even without the focal figure of a natural centre-forward. In this instance, Cunha was the centre-forward. The Red Devils had a verve about their attacking play in the opening exchanges, as the fresh faces linked well with club captain Bruno Fernandes - operating further forward as one of the No10s in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 - and Amad Diallo, who was flying down the right flank from wing-back. Cunha and Mbuemo showed neat touches to piece together intricate passages of play, and that will encourage Amorim greatly with the Premier League season two weeks out. United went ahead here thanks to Fernandes' penalty, which stemmed from one of those quick give-and-gos between the front three. Diallo was set off down the right by Fernandes, and the Ivorian cleverly waited for the contact from the desperate James Tarkowski, who felled him. United's club captain made no mistake, stroking into the bottom corner, but that was not before his side had been dealt an almighty scare, as Jake O'Brien rattled the post from just six yards out. The Irish defender had the goal at his mercy after James Garner, formerly of United, had tested Altay Bayindir with a dipping free-kick from range, and the deputy 'keeper parried into a dangerous area, leaving O'Brien with what should have been a simple rebound tap-in. United survived, and punished their opponents for it moments later. However, Everton were back on level terms when they put together an excellent move of their own, that showed some of the chinks in United's armour. Manuel Ugarte was converged upon quickly by Vitalii Mykolenko as the Uruguayan dallied on the edge of his own box, and the ball fell for Idrissa Gueye, who got his head up and picked out Iliman Ndiaye ghosting in at the far post with a beautifully crafted cross that the attacking midfielder guided home to equalise. Level at the break, Amorim decided to manage Mbeumo's minutes, and withdrew the Cameroonian for Patrick Dorgu, shifting Diallo into the attacking midfield duo and moving Diogo Dalot onto the right. That, however, stunted United's fizz that they had previously had, and the Red Devils looked a tad more mechanical and robotic in their attacking play thereafter. That said, it was one of Mbeumo's competitors for once of those two No10 spots - Mason Mount - who reinstated United's lead with a sublime curler into the far corner after some nice interchange with Fernandes. But United were pegged back once more, but this time, in bizarre circumstances. Fernandes kicked out at Ndiaye on the halfway line and the pair were involved in a scuffle as play wore on. Substitute right-back Tyler Onyango drove down the flank and sought out a team-mate in the middle with a cut-back, and the recovering Ayden Heaven and Diallo both got touches which helped the ball ricochet awkwardly into the back of the net. Despite the frustrations over the result, Amorim can take plenty of heart from his side's performance, particularly in the first period. Mbeumo and Cunha looked like real threats, and the best part for the Portuguese is that they already look comfortable bearing the heavy weight of the United shirt.
