WNC gem mining: 6 places to uncover hidden treasures this summer
Western North Carolina is known for its hills full of hidden treasures. From rubies and sapphires to emeralds and gold, the region is stocked with gems, stones and minerals still waiting to be discovered.
The region has a rich history of commercial mining, with abandoned mines dotting the landscape, and others still producing quartz so pure, it's become a critical component of the tech industry.
But for those amateur rockhounds who don't mind getting a little dirty and maybe a little wet, there are plenty of opportunities to dig for treasure.
While Tropical Storm Helene devastated Western North Carolina with severe flooding and landslides at the end of September, outdoor recreation businesses, vital the region's economy, are starting to reopen.
Here are some of the best WNC gems mines and other spots to prospect, dig and pan this summer.

Emerald Village
About an hour's drive northeast from Asheville, near Spruce Pine, Emerald Village is a popular spot for families to search for gems they can take home. The North Carolina Mining Museum is located here as is the Crabtree Emerald Mine, which once produced emeralds for New York's Tiffany & Co. There, visitors can pay for a digging permit and head up to the remote mine with hand tools to scour its dumps for gems.

Emerald Village, which is open for the season through Nov. 2, also hosts a black light mine tour, where visitors can go underground and catch fluorescent glimpses of feldspar and hyalite opal.

Museum of North Carolina Minerals
Off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Spruce Pine, rockhounds can learn even more about the region's mining history at the Museum of North Carolina Minerals. While the parkway sustained severe damage during Helene and the portion near Spruce Pine is still closed, visitors can still access the museum from N.C. 226.

This free National Park Service museum has hands-on, interactive exhibits where visitors can learn how the Blue Ridge Mountains were formed and evolved to produce such precious stones and minerals.

Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine
The Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine in Marion, east of Asheville, offers visitors the opportunity to try their hands at panning, sluicing and crevicing for gold along the Second Broad River.

Western North Carolina Nature Center
Though the red pandas and river otters are typically top draws at the WNC Nature Center in Asheville, parents can buy a bag of mining roughage at the Nature Center Gift shop and let their children pan for gems and fossils in a mining sluice.

Elijah Mountain Gem Mine
Elijah Mountain Gem Mine in Henderson County.
Henderson County's Elijah Mountain Gem Mine not only offers visitors the chance to take home precious stones, but it also features a goat farm, obstacle course and creek for little rockhounds to play in. There's also German-style beer on tap and a crystal and fossil store with museum-quality offerings.

The Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine
The Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine in Franklin, about 90 minutes southwest of Asheville, offers another 'dig-your-own' experience in an area with a rich mining heritage dating back to the 1870s. Here, amateur miners can uncover ruby, sapphire, garnet, moonstone and other native gems.

Jrue Holiday ‘pissed' after Celtics trade veteran to Blazers (report)
The Celtics made their first big move of the offseason on Monday night when they traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. Trading Holiday was not a surprise for Boston given the steep payroll and luxury tax commitments Boston was facing this summer in the wake of Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles. However, it was a bit of a surprise to see Holiday's landing spot coming in Portland, the team that traded him away two years ago and one that still is sitting outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference. I'll be surprised if Portland doesn't move him on if they can, because right now he does not want to go there. Flight attendant demands passenger spit out Zyn, leaving travelers confused about policies
Smoking and vaping are banned on flights, but it appears that smokeless nicotine pouches are allowed — depending on the airline. Pouches are allowed in both carry-on bags and checked bags, according to the TSA. Yet when it comes to the actual use of these items on flights, airlines can determine their own rules for smokeless tobacco activity. American, United, Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines do not specifically define on their websites whether passengers can use nicotine pouches, according to the most recent review of their sites. Recently, one flight passenger called out an airline in the "r/delta" forum on Reddit for an experience with chewing Zyn on board. "Got told to spit my Zyn out on a flight. I really didn't know that was a thing?" the user wrote. "Delta flight, first class (not that that matters). They brought a cup out and asked me to spit my Zyn out." The user added, "They said it was because it was a tobacco product. I didn't put up a fight and complied right away." "Was just wondering if this was an FAA thing I didn't know about?" asked the flight passenger. Redditors took to the comments section to share thoughts about the incident — and their own similar experiences. "Probably because the way you had it in your lip, it looked like a dip," said one user. Another Redditor argued, "Zyn isn't tobacco. You can have it in flight." "Tobacco or not, does it cause you to spit into a bottle or cup that could spill or be left stuffed in the seat pocket that someone else has to clean up?" said one person. "Then I'd say it doesn't matter what you call it," the person added. A user commented, "It [is] allowed but be discrete. I see many people using them on flights, myself included, and as long as you're not doing it right in front of an FA, you're fine," the person added. "It is silly because no one would stop you from using nicotine gum or a patch," the same user added. One user claimed, "I was on a United flight a few days ago and the shopping/menu magazine in the seatback actually had a Zyn ad in it. It said something like, 'Flight ready.'" "It said something like, 'Flight ready.'" "How would the FA even know what it is? Just looks like gum/mints," said another individual. On Delta's "Contract of Carriage" section on its website, the airline specifies a no-smoking policy. "Delta prohibits smoking and the use of all smokeless tobacco products (including e-cigarettes and vapes) on all flights," it states. A Delta spokesperson said the policy also prohibits smokeless tobacco, including pouches and gum.
