Event deepens understanding on Chinese zodiac signs

Kota Kinabalu: Kelab Kebudayaan Tiong Hua – Sheng Xi of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) hosted its annual Chinese Cultural Night on Sunday, drawing an enthusiastic crowd. Since its inception in 2011, the event has become a cherished tradition celebrating Chinese heritage. This year's theme, 'The 12 Chinese Zodiac', aimed to deepen understanding of zodiac signs and their stories, while promoting cultural appreciation among the younger generation. The afternoon featured food and beverage stalls, a colouring competition sponsored by Shu Ren Learning Center with around 60 participants, martial arts demonstrations and vocal performances. The evening programme began with a lion dance by Che Sui Khor Moral Uplifting Society and performances by student societies, including the Twenty-Four Festive Drum, Chinese Orchestra, Martial Arts Club and FunzCrew have captivated the audience. A special appearance by local singer Uriah See added to the excitement. Among the distinguished guest were Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Professor Dr Asmady Idris, International Affairs, and Associate Professor Dr Raman Noordin, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni.
Advertisement Also present were Director of the Student Affairs Department Azmi Jumat, Associate Professor Huang Yuehua and Dr Zou Dongmei of the Confucius Institute and representatives from cultural organisations and supporting businesses, such as Sabah Free Travel/Car Rental Service, Wei & Go Souvenir Shop and the Sabah Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The Chinese Cultural Night continues to be a vital platform for cultural exchange and unity, underscoring the diverse identity of the UMS student community. Let it stylishly hang loose: Untucked shirts are all the rage right now

At first glance, nothing appears out of the ordinary. But the white shirt is worn untucked, its hem peeking out beneath the sweater, lending the outfit a quietly rebellious edge. Over at the much-awaited Spring/Summer 2026 Dior menswear collection, new Dior designer, Jonathan Anderson, champions a similarly untucked spirit. A light blue and white pinstripe shirt is not only left untucked, but its cuffs are left undone. Even the necktie is rendered inside out, which is a deliberate design quirk rather than a wardrobe blunder. Tailored, with a fun and casual twist! Japanese label Sacai's take on the trend is half-tucked, and we're here for it. A pair of black, baggy trousers is styled with a white shirt that is tucked in on one side, left to hang loose on the other. Chinese actor Deng Wei joins in with a brown Moschino suit, his crisp white shirt left untucked for just the right touch of ease. Then there's Prada, its striped short-sleeve shirt that is tucked in at the front, but hanging out slightly at the back. A little undone, but in a cool way. Dashing but not too neat. Now that's what you call a tuck with attitude.

Bintang Kecil: Tawau lass to represent Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Nurul Hafizah Safri from Tawau will represent Sabah at the national Bintang Kecil 2025 competition, scheduled to be held in Kuching, Sarawak on Sept 20. She was named Best Participant for the Sabah Zone during the recent Debaran Bintang Kecil 2025 round, earning her a spot in the finals. Nurul edged out close competitor Hannah Jean Roney. Both received RM3,000 in cash prizes. Nurul expressed gratitude and promised to give her best in the finals. 'My hope is to do my best in Sarawak and make Tawau and Sabah proud,' she said. Her family, including her aunt Misbaria Maidin, has been supportive and noticed positive changes in Nurul since joining the competition. 'The Bintang Kecil stage has brought many benefits to children like my niece. She is now braver in public, compared to before when she was shy. She gained a lot of experience through this competition,' Misbaria said. A total of 11 participants from Brunei, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak will compete in the final, which this year highlights a Metaverse concept, combining digital creativity and live performance. Meanwhile, Sabah Broadcasting Director Mohd Yusni Mohamed Ali congratulated all participants and expressed hope that Sabah's representative would shine at the national level. 'Congratulations to all participants, especially Nurul from Tawau. She delivered an outstanding performance and rightly earned her place to represent the Sabah Zone. Party time in Penang as 988 FM's fest kicks off in style

On its first day yesterday, the event drew a massive crowd who revelled in a high-energy concert and a bustling bazaar, turning the festival into a memorable weekend experience. There was something for everyone, from lively musical performances and engaging stage activities to more than 50 creative and artisanal booths at the Esplanade, Penang. Yesterday's celebration featured performances by Abin Fang, Uriah See, Diorlying Tan, Trevor Kuo, Ryota Katayama and Z-Chen Zhang. The popular 'Infinite Good Finds Market' offered arts and crafts workshops, along with booths selling handmade ornaments, accessories, trinkets, snacks and culinary delights. A crowd favourite was the charity hair donation campaign, where participants received free haircuts for donating their hair. Those opting for regular cuts paid a fee, with proceeds channelled towards charitable causes. The two-day fest is organised by popular Chinese-language radio station 988 FM in conjunction with its 29th anniversary. It embodies the spirit of 'Play with Passion, Play with Purpose,' in line with the station's annual theme 'Infinite Play', to help participants de-stress joyfully and unlock creativity and energy. As for today, one of the main highlights will be a performance by legendary Taiwanese rock duo Power Station. The group, which made waves when it debuted in 1997, is set to perform some of its biggest hits and bring a sense of nostalgia to the crowd. Other artistes include Bestards, Anson Poon, Chronicles Ong Fu Ying and JUD Chen. Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the event augured well for the state's tourism industry. 'We must support it as it will bring excitement and interest to Penang. 'It is an attraction point and will encourage more people to come here and enjoy our food and other activities. 'I always believe a partnership between the private sector and the government will help to boost our tourism sector,' he added. Star Media Group group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt said he was happy to see the crowd growing steadily throughout the evening. 'I am looking forward to the whole event on both days including the international performance,' he said. He noted that 988 FM has been around for 29 years. 'For many years, it has been positioned as the number one Chinese station in Malaysia. 'That speaks volumes and I hope with the support of our listeners, we will continue to grow and hold more events like these in the future,' he added. 988 FM senior general manager Woo Bee Ay said the turnout was better than expected, with people arriving early to beat the heat. She said she hoped to hold more events like this in the future. 'Bring in music, entertainment and crafts so younger and older people can come together and celebrate our anniversary.' Also present were Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai as well as Star Media Group board member Loh Chee Can, chief operating officer Lydia Wang and client brand marketing (bureaus) general manager Simone Liong. Entrance to the After Work Fest is free, with activities running from 3pm to 10pm today.
