DY Chandrachud

The Vedanta group had sought his opinion after the US-based short seller has published a series of reports against the group, terming Vedanta Resources a 'parasite' company, apart from pointing out several other alleged irregularities.

2023 Dhangri killings: NIA court frames charges against 2 for sheltering terrorists, acting as their guide

The NIA court has framed charges against two persons under various Sections of the IPC and UAPA for not only harboring and providing food to terrorists involved in the killing of seven people in the twin terror attacks at Dhangri near Rajouri town on January 1 and 2, 2023, but also acting as their guide and helping them return to their hideout after the killings. Identified as Nisar Ahmed alias Haji Nisar and Mushtaq Hussain alias Chacha, the accused are lodged in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu. The court also charged them under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act for utilising the services of a minor for illegal activities. The NIA told the court that on January 1, 2023, some terrorists entered some houses at Dhangri and opened fire, killing four people and injuring seven others. One more succumbed to injuries. The next morning, two children were killed and some others injured in an IED explosion at the house of one of the victims. The IED was planted by the terrorists before they left after the firing. Initially, an FIR was registered at Rajouri police station, but later the NIA reregistered the case and took up probe following orders from the Centre. During probe, involvement of Pakistan-based terrorist organisation, Lashar-e-Taiba, surfaced, the NIA said. The accused, who appeared before the court through virtual mode, pleaded not guilty. Special Judge NIA Sandeep Gandotra observed that the allegations are very serious and there is sufficient material to show prima facie that they in furtherance of criminal conspiracy not only harboured the terrorists and provided them food and shelter, but they also acted as their guide and helped them return to their hideout after the massacre. The accused were in contact with the terrorists for approximately three months and they did not tell anybody about them despite getting many opportunities, the judge observed, quoting the NIA investigation. The judge on Thursday charged Nisar Ahmed for commission of offences under Sections 120-B and 201 of the IPC, Sections 18, 19, 20, 38 and 39 of the UAPA, besides Section 83 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Mushtaq was charged under Sections 120-B of IPC, Sections 18, 19 and 39 of UAPA and Section 83 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Apollo, Ares Eye Bigger Role Backing Sports Leagues, Teams

(Bloomberg) -- Apollo Global Management Inc. and Ares Management Corp. are both pushing deeper into sports investing, the latest multibillion-dollar alternative asset managers to put more money into the booming sector. Ares has begun talking to investors about a new media and entertainment fund designed for individuals, a departure from the traditionally exclusive nature of sports finance. The semi-liquid fund will target both debt and equity investments across sports leagues and businesses. Meanwhile, Apollo is considering creating a permanent capital vehicle dedicated to sports finance, a structure that would allow for longer-term and strategic investments in the industry. The fund would primarily lend to professional sports teams and leagues, with the option to take equity positions. Alts managers like Ares and Apollo have been pouncing on opportunities to invest in sports teams, boosted by the National Football League's landmark decision last year to allow private equity firms to own teams. In May, Bloomberg reported that a group of professional sports team insiders, including billionaire Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, were launching a private equity fund aimed at taking small stakes in pro sports teams. Arctos Partners, CVC Capital Partners and Ares have also been investing in leagues and teams, while Elliott Management Corp. and Oaktree Capital Management took ownership of football clubs after owners defaulted on their loans. The Ares fund will align with its push to reach individual investors and came in response to growing demand from financial advisers seeking to expose their retail clients to the asset class. Ares aims to capture $100 billion in assets from individual investors by 2028, an area that makes up 8% of its $546 billion asset base. If successful, the initiative could generate an estimated $600 million in management fees, it said. Los Angeles-based Ares has also been ramping up its investments in sports, buying stakes in the NFL's Miami Dolphins and other teams and closing its first fund dedicated to the strategy in 2022 with $3.7 billion. Meanwhile, New York-based Apollo has already signed a number of sports deals through existing pools of capital, including issuing loans to football teams such as Sporting Lisbon and Nottingham Forest. 'While sports teams, clubs and leagues often draw much of the attention, we believe the broader potential ecosystem of sports, media and entertainment investing is significant and underpenetrated,' Ares has said on its website. The firm has estimated the total investment opportunity in 'adjacent strategies' could be as much as $2.5 trillion. (Updates with potential investment opportunity figures in last paragraph.) Gulf Air Orders 12 New Boeing And 787 Dreamliners

US aviation giant Boeing on Thursday signed a contract worth billions of dollars to sell 12 787 Dreamliners, with options for six more, to Gulf Air, as the Bahrain-based carrier looks to expand its global network. The order comes one month after an Air India Boeing 787 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing a total of 260 people on the plane and on the ground. "Once finalised, this order will bring the carrier's firm order book to 14 of the versatile wide-body jets and will support 30,000 jobs across the US," the companies said in a joint statement. The official Bahrain News Agency said the kingdom's national carrier had signed a $4.6 billion agreement for 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The US Commerce Department put the value of the 18 planes at $7 billion. The deal "marks a transformative step in Gulf Air's strategic growth journey as we expand our global footprint and modernise our fleet with one of the industry's most advanced and efficient aircraft," said Gulf Air Group chairman Khalid Taqi. "The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has proven to be an exceptional aircraft for our long-haul operations, and this new order reflects our confidence in its performance, passenger appeal and contribution to our sustainability goals." Boeing delivered 150 commercial aircraft in the second quarter, its highest number of deliveries in that quarter since 2018. That was just before two 737 MAX crashes in October 2018 and March 2019 -- which killed 346 people -- plunged the company into crisis. The Air India jet bound for London crashed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on June 12. A preliminary investigation report revealed that the fuel control switches were switched off shortly after takeoff. Boeing has not been asked to take any action as the probe continues. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a trade pact with Indonesia that limits tariffs on Indonesian products at 19 percent, and said the deal features a pledge from the country to buy 50 Boeing jets, "many of them 777s."
