Authorities reveal how girl, 5, fell overboard from Disney Dream cruise ship before dad jumped in to save her

Independent2 days ago
Authorities have revealed how a five-year-old girl fell overboard on a Disney cruise, prompting a dramatic ocean rescue by her father.
As the Disney Dream sailed toward Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, the young girl was sitting on the fourth-deck railing while her parents played shuffleboard nearby.
The family had completed a four-night voyage through the Bahamas aboard the $900 million cruise when disaster struck and the girl slipped backwards, plunging 45ft into the ocean.
Initially, it was not clear what had led to the girl's fall. Now the Broward County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the child had lost her balance and tumbled through a porthole, CBS Miami reports.
The dad leapt from the cruise to save his daughter, treading water for up to 20 minutes before both were pulled aboard the ship's rescue boat.
'This family is so blessed,' a sheriff's spokesperson said, keeping the family's identity anonymous. 'It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.'
Passenger Monica Shannon told CBS the railings had 'little divots and spaces' that made it possible for the girl to climb up. Shannon was on the third-floor deck at the time, one below where the girl plunged from.
'I kind of see something really fast flew by, I didn't think anything of it,' she said. 'I just figured it was maybe a part of the show or just the experience, but about five minutes later we heard that someone flew overboard.'
Another passenger named Chandler previously told People magazine about the moment the girl hit the water.
'It sounded like hitting the pavement,' she said. 'Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother and then this massive splash.'
Chandler said she was with her family when the commotion began, and 'Mr. M.O.B.,' meaning man overboard, blared out over the ship's intercom as it traveled between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. The passenger said she didn't think rescuers would be able to locate the dad and daughter and told her nine-year-old daughter Harper that 'they were probably gone.'
Video shared online shows the yellow rescue boat quickly bobbing through the waters to reach the father and daughter as onlookers watched from on top of the ship.
One clip shared on TikTok shows the girl in the boat wrapped in a towel while being embraced by a rescue worker. In another, the girl's sodden father could be seen breathlessly clutching onto a rescuer.
Travelers erupted into rapturous applause as the rescue teams threw out a rope for the pair to grab onto and safely pulled them onto the jetty.

Cops say speed was a factor in Sophia Hutchins' ATV crash as friend Caitlyn Jenner breaks silence on 'tough times'

Sophia Hutchins was speeding in the ATV she was driving when she rear-ended another vehicle on a winding mountainous road in Malibu, careening over a 350ft cliff to her death, investigators tell Hutchins, who was Caitlyn Jenner 's manager and beloved confidant, is believed to have been traveling at a rapid rate southbound on steeply-inclined Decker Canyon Road in a black and blue-colored 2013 Polaris 'side-by-side' when she slammed into a gray 2016 Mazda 6. 'It looks like she may have been speeding and rear-ended the other car, the other party, and then that caused her to veer to the right and go off the cliff,' said Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, based at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. 'It doesn't seem like she was following them. I think she just she came up on them and then hit the car.' Sgt Saucedo added that there were two females in the other vehicle, a gray 2016 Mazda 6. 'So it looked like she tried to maneuver to go around it, but she was going too fast and just ended up clipping the rear end of that Mazda, causing her to veer off and go off the cliff there.' The incident occurred at 11.30am on July 2, a quarter of a mile south of Decker Edison Road where Jenner lives. Sgt Saucedo said he believes the former Olympian, impassioned MAGA fan and supporter and of President Donald Trump attended the accident site while Sheriff's deputies were on scene. He said it would not be known if drugs or alcohol were involved until a toxicology report is provided by the coroner's office. A search and rescue team rappelled down the cliffside to recover Hutchins' body, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Both of the women in the Mazda were uninjured and stayed at the scene to be interviewed by the deputies. The driver, revealed Saucedo, was a local realtor who had been showing a house in the area. Speaking with the on Friday, Saucedo revealed that the damaged ATV had been left in place in the ravine because the 'tow company didn't have a line that was long enough to attach it and pull it up.' The same day, an emotional Jenner, 75, revealed to that she was going through 'tough times' amid her obvious searing grief. She spent the national holiday in mourning at her remote four-bedroom, four-bathroom mountain-top Malibu home, complete with stunning 360-degree views, that she purchased in 2015 for $3,575,000. Then in the afternoon, she was spotted visiting a local Starbucks on Pacific Coast Highway for a refreshment. This is not the first time Jenner has dealt with immense tragedy following a vehicle accident fatality. In 2015, she was driving a Cadillac Escalade towing a trailer with an off-road vehicle when traffic suddenly slowed ahead and she rear-ended a Lexus driven by Kimberly Howe, 70, which was already slowing or had stopped. The force of the impact shunted Howe's vehicle into the opposite lane, where it was struck head-on by a Hummer. She died at the scene. Four vehicles were involved in the horrific accident. Sheriff's investigators found Jenner was traveling within the speed limit, though possibly 'unsafe for road conditions.' She braked 1.5 to 2 seconds before impact, having eased off the gas around four seconds prior. The case was reviewed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office but prosecutors concluded that they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that her actions were unreasonable or negligent, so they declined to pursue vehicular manslaughter charges citing a lack of evidence despite the sheriff's department recommending manslaughter. Jenner had to pay $800,000 to settle a lawsuit and also pay for the plaintiffs' medical expenses and attorneys' fees. Hutchins featured heavily in the reality series I Am Cait which ran for two seasons. She previously told The New York Times that they 'were never romantically involved' with each other which Jenner has repeated. 'I don't feel a need to address my sex life, quite frankly, unless I want to,' Hutchins told the outlet in 2019. Then aged 23, she riffed on Jenner's superstar relatives: 'I'm on good terms with all the family, but I'm closest with Kris, Kim, Kylie and Kendall.' Hutchins' last public appearance with Jenner was in 2024 when Sophia accompanied her to the April 2024 White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. Just like her boss, Hutchins was a vocal supporter of Trump and met with him, posted to social media: 'The energy, passion, and commitment for our movement to Save America has never been greater! We will never give up' In January of this year, Hutchins also posted to Instagram a photo of she and Jenner celebrating Trump's second inauguration with Judge Jeanine Pirro. Jenner re-posted the image to her own Instagram for her 15.2 million followers to see. Hutchins' final Instagram post was in April when she showed followers a picture broken candelabra that had been repaired. She was a student at the prestigious Pepperdine University when she met Jenner. In 2016, Hutchins told her school newspaper that it was her new friend who inspired her to transition.

Michael Madsen dead at 67: Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs star passes away at his Malibu home

Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs icon Michael Madsen has died aged 67. The legendary actor was found 'unresponsive' at his Malibu home early Thursday morning, can confirm. Deputies responded to the Los Angeles County home after a 911 call early Thursday. Madsen was pronounced dead at the home. The star's manager Ron Smith claimed to that Madsen had died from 'cardiac arrest.' A statement from the star's representatives read: 'In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives, and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life. 'Madsen was also preparing to release a new book called Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems. A frequent collaborator of Quentin Tarantino, Madsen starred in films including 1993's Reservoir Dogs (left) and 2003's Kill Bill (right) His death comes 11 months after the Kill Bill star was arrested for domestic violence amid claims he got physical with his spouse DeAnna - the case was later tossed out - pictured 2009 'Michael Madsen was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many.' Madsen was best known for his frequent collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino, starring in Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He also starred in 1997's Donnie Brasco as Sonny Black. Madsen is survived by his five children, wife DeAnna and his actress sister Virginia Madsen. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022 aged 26. Virginia paid emotional tribute to Madsen in a statement to Variety, which read: 'My brother Michael has left the stage. He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother — etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark. 'We're not mourning a public figure. We're not mourning a myth — but flesh and blood and ferocious heart. Who stormed through life loud, brilliant, and half on fire. Who leaves us echoes — gruff, brilliant, unrepeatable — half legend, half lullaby. 'I'll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him. I'll miss the boy he was before the legend; I miss my big brother. Thank you to everyone reaching out with love and memory. In time, we'll share how we plan to celebrate his life — but for now, we stay close, and let the silence say what words can't.' He was first wed to Georganne LaPiere, half-sister of singer and actress Cher from 1984-1988. He welcomed a daughter named Jessica with Dana Mechling. He was married to Jeannine Bisignano from 1991 to 1995. They have two sons, Christian and Max. In 1996, he married DeAnna. Together they had three sons, Luke, Kalvin and Hudson. His death comes 11 months after his domestic violence case - where he was accused of shoving wife DeAnna - was dismissed due to 'insufficient evidence.' 'We are thrilled that Michael Madsen is able to put this behind him and look forward to our continued collaboration with more great things coming from this veteran and respected actor,' his representative said at the time. The star was arrested for domestic violence amid claims he got physical with his spouse. He also allegedly locked her out of their home, which is located in the Los Angeles area. The Reservoir Dogs star was given a misdemeanor domestic violence charge at the time. He also had to spend part of his weekend in jail, before posting a $20,000 bond. Days later in a statement to THR, Madsen's lawyer Perry Wander insisted that his client was 'not guilty of domestic violence.' A representative for the star confirmed the incident saying: 'It was a disagreement between Michael and his wife, which we hope resolves positively for them both.' Madsen filed for divorce from DeAnna in September 2024 - and in court papers obtained by he accused his estranged wife of driving their son to die by suicide 'by her neglect, drinking and alcoholism.' A month later, he issued a regretful Instagram statement apologizing for his claims and denying he had wanted to end their marriage. He said: 'Losing a child is the hardest and most painful experience that can happen in this world. I deeply apologize for not correcting this earlier but I love my wife and our other 4 children and have no desire for divorce or blame. 'She had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to our son. It was a horrible loss and choice that was made for reasons that truly cannot ever be known because the person is gone, I don't think my son is dead , I think he escaped from a life that didn't make sense anymore.' It wasn't Madsen's first brush with the law. In 2022 the Hollywood actor was arrested for trespassing at a luxury house from which he was evicted, reported. It was a $5.3 million Malibu mansion just across the Pacific Coast Highway from La Costa Beach. A source exclusively told at the time: 'Michael had been living at the house since last year, but the lease was in another person's name.' The house was leased out by another person and several thousand dollars were owed in back rent, has learned. The owner had tried for the past two years to get the tenants evicted, but because of the moratorium on evictions on account of Covid, it took several months to go through the legal process. His arrest came just a month after his son, US Army Sgt. Hudson Madsen shot himself dead on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where he was stationed with the 25th Infantry Division. Hudson was an Afghan war vet. Hudson's death came a week after his wife Carlie underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her breast. 'I am in shock as my son, whom I just spoke with a few days ago, said he was happy - my last text from him was "I love you dad,"' he told the Los Angeles Times. 'I didn't see any signs of depression. It's so tragic and sad. I'm just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened.' Madsen said his son's marriage was 'going strong' and he had recently completed his first tour in the U.S. Army. 'He had typical life challenges that people have with finances, but he wanted a family. He was looking towards his future, so its mind-blowing. I just can't grasp what happened.' Madsen has requested a full military investigation into his son's death. The actor thinks 'the officers and rank and file were shaming' Hudson for wanting therapy. He believes this stopped him from seeking help for mental health issues he had been keeping to himself. In 2019, the actor was axed from a $100,000 role in movie Confessions of a Serial Killer after crashing his Land Rover into a pole and subsequently being arrested for DUI. He was later sentenced to four days in jail. In 2012 he was also arrested for DUI after driving erratically but struck a plea deal that involved attending AA meetings in lieu of more severe punishment. However, after Madsen failed to attend his court ordered Alcoholics Anonymous meetings his probation was revoked. That same year he was arrested at his Malibu home after allegedly getting into a physical fight with his son after catching him smoking marijuana. The actor was being held in jail on $100,000 bail after being charged with child endangerment with cruelty to a child: a felony charge, which means it is considered a crime of high seriousness. He did not face any charges after his arrest for suspected child endangerment.
