Hugh Freeze: 'I truly believe' Auburn will be in the mix for the College Football Playoff
Freeze said Tuesday at SEC media day that he believed his team would be in the playoff conversation at the end of the season. Auburn went 5-7 in 2024, but Freeze said that he felt his team was better than it was a season ago.

'I truly believe that in the playoff run we're going to be in this discussion because I love this team,' Freeze said. '… Now we've got to stay healthy and we need the ball to bounce our way a couple times this year instead of against us, I'm sure, but that's our full expectation. We embrace the fact that is what Auburn should be, in those talks year in, year out.'
'It takes a little time to build it, and we've been doing that. Certainly I wish we would have won more games a few times, but the future is very bright in my eyes. We've been blessed everywhere we've been to win, and I expect nothing less than that at Auburn.'
The Tigers are 11-14 in Freeze's two seasons and 5-11 in the SEC. Former Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold is in line to start after arriving from Norman in the offseason. But Arnold struggled himself in 2024 and was replaced as Oklahoma's starter during the season.
Auburn's schedule is one of the toughest in the country as well. In addition to annual rivalry games with Georgia and Alabama, The Tigers have road games at Oklahoma and Texas A&M and also host a Missouri team that went 10-3 in 2024. A trip to Baylor is on tap in Week 1 too. The Bears ended the 2024 regular season on a six-game win streak and finished 8-5.

If Auburn is in the playoff discussion, Freeze will get serious consideration for the SEC coach of the year. Conversely, if the Tigers are under .500 for a third straight season, Freeze may find himself under serious pressure. Especially after setting expectations so high before the season.

ARLINGTON, TX — Left-hander Tarik Skubal put the Detroit Tigers in a position to win, but when he was pulled from the game at 105 pitches with two outs and runners on the corners in the seventh inning, the Texas Rangers took advantage. The Rangers immediately tied the game. But the Tigers clawed back to snap a season-long six-game losing streak. The Tigers beat the Rangers, 2-1, on Sunday, July 20, in the finale of the three-game series at Globe Life Field, as Matt Vierling delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning. It marked the Tigers' first win since July 8, and made them, at 60-40, the first MLB team to 60 wins. WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Key questions for Tigers after All-Star break, including the bullpen problem In the seventh inning, Skubal and Johan Heim battled for eight pitches with runners on the corners, following Adolis García's double and Kyle Higashioka's single. On the eighth pitch, Skubal ripped a changeup below the strike zone for a swinging strikeout. The eight-pitch battle brought Skubal's pitch count to 105. And it ended his 20th start. The Tigers turned to left-handed reliever Tyler Holton, but on his fourth pitch, he threw a changeup for a wild pitch that got away from catcher Dillon Dingler and rolled toward the Tigers' dugout, allowing García to score easily The wild pitch tied the game, 1-1. In the following inning, back-to-back singles from Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene set the table, but back-to-back outs from Spencer Torkelson and Wenceel Pérez threatened the momentum against right-handed reliever Chris Martin. But Vierling saved the day for the Tigers, knocking a two-out RBI single on a full-count fastball into center field for a 2-1 lead. NFL Players Association executive JC Tretter is resigning amid union overhaul
WASHINGTON (AP) — NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter is resigning from his position, three days after Lloyd Howell stepped down as executive director of the players' union. Tretter told CBS Sports on Sunday that he doesn't want to be considered for the NFLPA's interim executive director position and denied he played any role in undermining Howell's position. 'Over the last couple days, it has gotten very, very hard for my family. And that's something I can't deal with,' Tretter told CBS Sports on Sunday. 'So, the short bullet points are: I have no interest in being (executive director). I have no interest in being considered. I've let the executive committee know that. I'm also going to leave the NFLPA in the coming days because I don't have anything left to give the organization.' The 34-year-old Tretter, who played center for eight seasons with Green Bay and Cleveland through 2021, was the player president from 2020 to 2024. He served in his new role since October 2024. Howell resigned Thursday after two years because his leadership had become a distraction. Howell has come under scrutiny since ESPN reported he has maintained a part-time consulting job with the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm that holds league approval to seek minority ownership in NFL franchises. That followed the revelation that the NFLPA and the league had a confidentiality agreement to keep quiet an arbitrator's ruling about possible collusion by owners over quarterback salaries. The latest issue was an ESPN report Thursday that revealed two player representatives who voted for Howell were not aware that he was sued in 2011 for sexual discrimination and retaliation while he was a senior executive at Booz Allen. In 2023, a year after the NFLPA sued the owners for collusion, the NFL sued the union after Tretter suggested in an interview that running backs who were unhappy with their contracts could fake injuries, which would be a violation of the collective bargaining agreement. The grievance also was decided this year and was not shared publicly. Tretter told CBS Sports he didn't have access to the collusion grievance and wasn't involved in the confidentiality agreements. Tretter was the NFLPA's player president in 2023 when Howell was elected as the union's executive director following a vote that changed the union's constitution and made the search and election process more confidential. 'I'm not resigning because what I've been accused of is true,' Tretter said. 'I'm not resigning in disgrace. I'm resigning because this has gone too far for me and my family, and I've sucked it up for six weeks. And I felt like I've been kind of left in the wind taking shots for the best of the organization. ... And in the end, what's the organization done for me? Like, nothing.' ___ AP NFL:
