UK baby names: ‘Yahya' climbs the baby name charts — here's what it means
According to newly released data from the Office for National Statistics, 583 baby boys in the UK were named Yahya in 2024, enough to place it at number 93 on the most popular boys' names list, a jump of 33 places from the year before. It's the name's first time entering the UK's top 100.
This sudden jump in popularity has not gone unnoticed by people, because 'Yahya' is also the first name of
Yahya Sinwar
, the Hamas leader.
Yahya name is of Arabic origin, rooted in the Quranic tradition where it represents the Arabic form of John—known in Hebrew as Yohannan.
The name comes from the Arabic root ḥ-y-y (حيي), meaning "to live" or "life," and is often interpreted as "he lives" or "long-lived." In Islam, Yahya refers to John the Baptist, a respected prophet who is regarded as the forerunner to Jesus.
Yahya wasn't the only new entry in the baby name rankings. Among boys, names like Austin, Nathan, and Vinnie also made it into the top 100. For girls, Athena, Eloise, Rosa, Nora, and Zoe were fresh entries.
