T-Mobile TPR reportedly turns away customers seeking plans "not profitable enough"

You might not be old enough to remember when T-Mobile was dead last among the four major U.S. wireless carriers. Not only were they among the last of the majors to offer 3G service, they also were among the last to flip the switch turning on 4G LTE. The carrier was not relevant until September 2012 when John Legere was named president and CEO of T-Mobile in the U.S. Taking a customer-first approach, Legere did away with customer pain points such as subsidized phones and the two-year contracts that went with them. He gave T-Mobile the Uncarrier brand to differentiate it from the competition and helped T-Mobile offer zero-rated perks such as free streaming music and Netflix "on us." Legere also made fun of T-Mobile's competitors calling Verizon and AT&T "Dumb and Dumber," respectively. Who would have thought that taking care of customers would turn T-Mobile around? Legere did, obviously, and after acquiring Sprint and making other smaller acquisitions, T-Mobile became the most innovative and fastest-growing wireless provider in the U.S. But after Legere left following the closing of the Sprint deal, his former right-hand man Mike Sievert took over; while T-Mobile continues to report spectacular numbers every quarter, as you probably know, there has been a huge drop in customer service as the current regime has put more emphasis on certain metrics that reps must meet to keep their jobs.

Since the "suits" frown upon sales of a "naked" phone, a few rogue reps have felt the pressure to add accessories to customers' invoices without their consent. T-Mobile Mobile Experts have gone on social media to detail some of the ways that they trick consumers in order to hit their metrics requirements. As bad as it is in corporate-owned stores, things are worse with the carrier's TPR ( T-Mobile Premium Retailer) stores which are owned and operated by third-party companies with authorization to use the T-Mobile name. These stores look like they are owned and run by T-Mobile , but they are not and many of them have been accused of seriously shady sales tactics. Among the worse of the TPR locations have been those units owned by Arch Telecom.
According to the Arch employee, the top brass doesn't want him or other reps to sell this plan because "it's not 'profitable' enough." For some working at stores like this, it doesn't matter to them that seniors with low income are being turned away from buying a plan designed just for them. But the Redditor obviously doesn't think like some of his colleagues and management since he writes, "Never mind that many of these customers are seniors just trying to save money in this economy. Management would rather we push more expensive plans to hit inflated sales goals than do what's right for the customer."

The post goes on to note that Arch has cut commissions even while reps are being forced to handle the "skyrocketing" numbers of customer complaints. Things look bleak for those reps working for this T-Mobile TPR and most likely others as well. Don't expect T-Mobile to force Arch and others to make any changes. As long as the stock holds at its current level, just 14% from the 52-week high, CEO Sievert and the T-Mobile Board have no incentive to clean things up despite many complaints from T-Mobile subscribers posting online.

Google today announced a surprise Pixel Drop, previously known as a Pixel Feature Drop. These usually come every three months but we weren't expecting one until September. So that's why they call it a surprise. It brings a free year of the Google AI Pro subscription to owners of the Pixel 9 Pro (and presumably the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold as well). This includes access to Veo 3, Google's AI video creating tool. Next up, Circle to Search gets AI Mode integration, letting you access AI Mode's "advanced reasoning" to "explore complex topics and dig into your initial searches with follow-up questions" without switching apps. This works automatically when Google's systems "determine an AI response to be most helpful". If so, then an AI Overview will appear in your results, and from there you can tap on "dive deeper with AI Mode" to ask follow-up questions and "explore content across the web that's relevant to your visual search". AI Mode can also now be accessed through Lens via the Google app for Android and iOS. AI Mode in Circle to Search and Lens is currently only available in the US and India. Starting today, Circle to Search can also help you in games, giving you tips when you feel stuck. You'll even see suggested videos to help you further navigate your game. This is out today in the countries where AI Overviews are available. And speaking of AI Overviews, the responses should now be "easier to read, breaking down key information, and incorporating more visuals directly". Finally, Gemini is headed to Wear OS watches from Google, Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. This will replace Google Assistant and will use the same advanced AI models as on your phone. Gemini on Wear OS lets you speak naturally, "understanding your speech patterns and delivering fast, concise responses" on your wrist. It also works across apps so you can ask it to send a message, create a playlist, summarize an email, add stuff to your calendar, and navigate places. You just need to enable action-taking within other Google apps like Gmail and Calendar on your paired phone. Gemini can also remember details you ask it to. We're almost ten days into July, which means 2025 is practically over: yeah, time does fly by that quick. Joking aside, today's July 9 will go down in history as the day Samsung introduced no less than three new foldables: Galaxy Z Fold 7 Galaxy Z Flip 7 Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE Let's pay some extra attention to the FE model – after all, that's the first time Samsung has made a Fan Edition foldable. I won't go into a detailed technical explanation or specs review of the Z Flip 7 FE – there's something else on my mind. Something that is worth discussing. Namely: Was – or rather, is – the present day the best day for releasing such a device? Image by PhoneArena Let's check the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE real quick. It comes in just two variants, going on sale on July 25 (pre-orders start now): Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE: 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB storage – $899 FE: 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB storage – Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE: 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB storage – $959 The FE is more or less a rebranded Galaxy Z Flip 6. Why? Well, it sports the same front and inner screens, for starters. The main screen is a 6.7-inch one, and the top display is a 3.4-inch one. Just like the ones of its outer screen might be seen as small, especially when compared to that of the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 and its 4-inch top display. That may be true for some, but the Galaxy Z Flip 6 's top display that the Z Flip 7 FE inherits can be a positive: The Galaxy Z Flip 6 helped cure my doomscrolling addiction There's a 50 MP main camera on the FE newcomer (apparently the same as the one on the more expensive and premium Z Flip 7 ), but the Z Flip 6 also offered a 50 MP sensor for the main snapper. So, those among us who are impressed with the total megapixel count probably won't be that impressed. As far as colors go, the Z Flip 7 FE comes in either white or black, which is… boring for me. Foldables are flashy, exotic gadgets that still draw quite the attention, so why not come up with some extra hues – and please, something bolder – next time around, Samsung? Even the current 6.8-inch panels on non-foldable flagships pale in comparison to the 8-inch inner screen monsters that book style foldables offer. Clamshells are super cool as well and anyone who likes their tech petite and pocketable – but versatile nonetheless – will surely embrace this form why it's kind of logical for Samsung to manufacture the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. The FE stands for Fan Edition – Samsung's special line of smartphones and devices designed to offer flagship-level features at a more affordable price. Aimed at fans who want high performance, good displays, and solid cameras without the premium cost, FE models typically use slightly older processors, plastic backs instead of glass, and fewer high-end extras. Image by PhoneArena Foldables have been around for a few years now, but for many people, they've remained a niche luxury. Prices hovering well over $1,000 have kept foldables out of reach for most average smartphone users, limiting them to tech enthusiasts, early adopters, and those willing to splurge for the sake of novelty. By introducing the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE at a more accessible price point, Samsung is signaling that it's time to take foldables mainstream. The company has been down this road before. We've seen how the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition became a turning point for Samsung's flagship S series, opening the door to people who wanted top-notch features without draining their wallets. Our Galaxy S20 FE review from 2020 confirmed that this was the best price-to-value phone that Samsung has ever released. Applying the same Fan Edition strategy to the foldable segment is a clever way to lower the barrier without sacrificing the core experience that makes foldables appealing. The Z Flip 7 FE doesn't aim to be the most advanced or the most premium – it aims to be good enough for the everyday user who's curious about foldables but hesitant to spend over $1,000 to try one. In a way, the timing makes perfect sense. Foldables are no longer futuristic experiments – they're slowly becoming just another form of smartphone. By releasing the Z Flip 7 FE in 2025, Samsung is helping to normalize foldables, to make them as common as traditional bar-shaped phones. Image by PhoneArena That's where things get a bit tricky for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. At $900, it isn't dramatically cheaper than Samsung's own flagship clamshells like the Z Flip 6 or Z Flip 7 , which often hover around the $1,000 mark – especially when you factor in frequent discounts and trade-in offers. In fact, a discounted Z Flip 6 could easily drop to the same price or even lower, making it a more attractive option for buyers who prefer a slightly older model with a more premium feel. This raises the question: who exactly is the Z Flip 7 FE for?If Samsung's goal was to bring foldables to the masses, a truly budget-friendly clamshell – perhaps something in the $600 range – would have made more sense. That would allow first-time users to experience the magic of foldables without the mental hurdle of spending a ton of people get hooked on the convenience, style, and versatility of folding phones, many would naturally move up to the premium Flip models in the future. Without that wider price gap, though, the Flip FE risks becoming redundant. It's neither cheap enough to spark mass adoption nor premium enough to justify its price over slightly older, discounted flagship models already on the why I think 2025 was (is) not the best year for the Z Flip FE to materialize. Maybe it should've been released in 2021 alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which debuted at $999. Maybe, a cheaper FE clamshell would've been more popular back then. Let's not forget that competition is also heating up in the foldable market. Brands like Motorola, Oppo, and Xiaomi are pushing aggressively into the foldable space, some offering larger cover screens and slimmer designs.
