Yuan near 8-month high on support from softer dollar, hopes for easing trade tensions

SHANGHAI: The yuan held steady against the US dollar on Wednesday, trading near an eight-month high hit in the previous session, underpinned by weakness in the greenback and hopes for an easing of US-China trade tensions.
The spot yuan opened at 7.1652 per dollar and was last trading at 7.1658 as of 0250 GMT, 8 pips lower than the previous late session close, and 0.16% weaker than the midpoint.
'We expect the Chinese yuan to continue its gradual appreciation against the US dollar, potentially reaching 7.1 by year-end and 7.00 by mid-2026, assuming the tariff truce holds and the dollar continues to weaken,' analysts at UBS Global Wealth Management's Chief Investment Office said in a note.
'The main risk to our outlook is a breakdown in trade negotiations,' they said, adding that broad dollar weakness should help limit down in the yuan.
The yuan is 1.9% firmer this year against the dollar. The Chinese yuan has drawn support over the past two months from signs of easing trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.
Ahead of the market opening, the People's Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 7.1546 per dollar, 77 pips firmer than a Reuters' estimate.
The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day.
Based on Wednesday's official midpoint setting, the yuan's trade-weighted value against its basket of currencies, as measured by the CFETS yuan basket index, fell to 95.09, the lowest level since January 4, 2021.
The US dollar hovered near 3 1/2-year lows as investors weighed the prospect of US interest rate cuts and the scramble for trade deals ahead of President Donald Trump's July 9 deadline for tariffs.
'We don't expect the RMB to appreciate significantly given persistent deflationary pressures and need to keep monetary policy accommodative,' said Morgan Stanley analysts.
'Pursuing currency appreciation on its own would exacerbate deflation, might be insufficient to secure a trade deal, and wouldn't bring sustainable rebalancing.'
The offshore yuan traded at 7.1637 yuan per dollar, down about 0.04% in Asian trade.
Hong Kong's de facto central bank said on Wednesday it sold $2.25 billion against the Hong Kong dollar after it hit the weak end of its trading band.

Financials, tech stocks nudge Aussie shares near record high

Australian shares moved closer to a record high on Friday, boosted by technology and financial stocks ahead of an expected interest rate cut by the local central bank next week, though losses in commodity stocks capped gains. The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.2% to 8,611.50 points by 0047 GMT, just 27.6 points shy of the record high hit on June 11. The benchmark has gained more than 1% so far this week and is headed for its best week since mid-May. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to cut rates on Tuesday, a Reuters poll of economists showed. Markets and economists had earlier forecast three RBA rate cuts this year but raised their projections to four in May and now to five, as inflation eased faster than expected and the growth outlook weakened. While lower borrowing costs typically pressure bank margins, they could support the broader economy by spurring growth and potentially drive up both loan demand and volumes. Financials rose 0.4%, recovering from a more than 1% drop on Thursday. National Australia Bank and Westpac rose 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively. Rate-sensitive real estate stocks climbed as much as 1% to a three-week high. Scentre Group and Goodman Group gained more than 1% each. Technology stocks added 1.4%, taking cues from the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, which notched record closes overnight. Shares of Xero advanced 0.9%. Bucking the trend, heavyweight miners lost 1.3% after rising more than 3% on Thursday. BHP Group and Rio Tinto shed 2% and 2.3%, respectively. Gold stocks eased 0.2% after bullion prices declined 1% overnight. Oil stocks followed suit, dropping 0.2%. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index added 0.5% to 12,770.55 points.

Copper set for weekly gains; potential US tariffs on metal eyed

SINGAPORE: Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange were set for a second straight weekly gain on Friday, despite minor fluctuations, while traders looked out for potential US tariffs on copper imports. Three-month copper on the LME added 0.06% to $9,960 per metric ton by 0106 GMT, rising 0.85% so far this week, while the most-traded copper contract on the SHFE eased 0.31% to 80,510 yuan ($11,231.24), gaining 1.02% this week. 'The dollar has strengthened a bit as (the) United States may not cut interest rates soon with better-than-expected payrolls and unemployment data, the 'big beautiful bill' has been passed and the focus of the copper market has been back to the possible import tariffs by the US,' a Beijing-based metals analyst with a futures company said. Two analysts from China dismissed the significance of the recent rises in total copper stocks in LME-registered warehouses. The volume grew by 3,700 tons or 4.1% for three consecutive days to July 3, after declining gradually from mid-April. 'Copper will be shipped to the US from elsewhere so long as the US tariff is not a done deal,' a Shanghai-based metals analyst with a futures company said. The COMEX copper premium over LME prices stood at around $1,300 a ton on Thursday, while canceled warrants, or metal earmarked to leave LME warehouses, totalled 31,900 tons. LME nickel slipped 0.33% to $15,400 a ton and zinc lost 0.31% to $2,742. SHFE nickel gained 0.75% to 122,400 yuan a ton, lead rose 0.12% to 17,280 yuan and tin added 0.08% to 269,220 yuan. Aluminium shed 0.12% to 20,660 yuan.

Palm falls on weakness in rival oils, profit taking

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Friday, pressured by weaker rival edible oils at the Chicago and Dalian markets and by profit booking, but remained on track for a seventh weekly gain in eight. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 22 ringgit, or 0.54%, to 4,069 ringgit ($963.08) a metric ton at the midday break. The contract has risen 1.67% so far this week. Crude palm oil prices were lower, tracking overnight weakness in soybean oil and Dalian palm olein prices, said David Ng, a proprietary trader at Kuala Lumpur-based trading firm Iceberg X Sdn Bhd. 'Profit-taking activities after the recent price rally also affected the market,' he added. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.92%, while its palm oil contract shed 0.45%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade lost 0.96%. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices were little changed as a solid US job market bolstered the case for the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates on hold, with investors also awaiting clarity on President Donald Trump's plans for tariffs on various countries. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.12% against the dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Malaysia's palm oil inventories likely dropped for the first time in four months in June as production fell unexpectedly while export demand remained robust for the tropical oil, a Reuters survey showed. Palm oil may fall to 4,047 ringgit per ton as a five-wave cycle from 3,947 ringgit has completed, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
